Smells Like Padres in Here - Friday Edition

Maybe it isn't  May?

Alderson says we won't see major changes any time soon.  Good.  At least we know what to expect.

This was mentioned in the OT last night, but Buzzie Bavasi died yesterday.  He was one of the men instrumental in bringing the Padres to MLB and the team's first president.

NYT takes a look at Arizona.

Tonight in Florida, Germano takes on the Marlins and Mark Hendrickson, who apparently doesn't suck anymore.  Game time is 4:10pm PDT.

was at the game last night.....

god that was depressing. i plan on seeing the padres at least once more this year (at yankee stadium) and i hope my outlook is more optimistic by then. gonzalez homered in the first and i bet 3 phillies fans in my section that we wouldn’t score another run the entire game (they really hate eaton).

this station-to-station strategy only works if you have good hitters with patience hitting 1-8. seems like every time somebody got on base our lineup would spit out edmonds or kouz (who looks terrible) and nothing would happen. this team feels completely lifeless and i think it has just as much to do with our record as it does the “fun” being taken out of the game.

seriously….stealing bases, hitting homeruns, flying around the bases and diving catches. these are things that make the fans and team go crazy. do our guys do ANY of that? edmonds is too old, giles has a bad knee and hairston always seems to get there but never make the catch. gonzalez is a good hitter but by no means “electric”. if you were on this team….watching from the bench every night….wouldn’t you just be bored?

i’ll do what i always do and go back to ‘98. vaughn and cammy were cranking out homers and finley was diving all over the place. every night something happened that made the crowd explode. and it wasn’t all luck. you have to have SOME excitement to make your guys excited to be playing every day. we’re officially a bottom-dwelling team that gets it’s excitement every 5th day from it’s ace. i never wanted to be that team.

No changes in the next week or ten days.

That means halfway through May, if it’s not in gear, it’s changes time. I’m still eyeing the 15th as the panic button date.

New York Times didn’t factor in that Cecil Cooper is a moron who likes to give away games to the Diamondbacks.

Edmonds

So do you think he knows he has 2 weeks to get his rear in gear?

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

Writing is on the wall.

Everything Towers and Alderson have said leading up to now has been consistent… consistently beating around the bush, but consistent nonetheless. :)

8 mil for .160 1 HR 6 RBI

Seems other teams are less patient than the Padres. Look at Zito’s demotion, and Thomas and Turnbow getting released. One month down, all the struggles, but still, other than lineup mods, not major changes. I think they may just wait and hope the Dbacks continue their winning ways so they can then state “See ya next year”. Funny thing, I might just say that with my tickets next year.

The 10 days remark

I think that was a very intentional statement on Alderson’s part. If you look at the schedule for the next 10 days, there are 3 games at FLA, 3 games at ATL and then 3 games at home versus CO. None of those three teams are setting the world on fire and it would seem reasonable to me that they are waiting to see if the team in its current state can get it rolling in these 9 games against these 3 teams. That’s also about a 6 week mark in the season where you have to start believing in the trends you’re seeing.

You're totally right

At this point, the Padres front office is planning out a strategy and giving it 10 more games, which would put us right around 40 games, which is incidentally the sample size you’d need to be 60% confident that what you’re seeing is what you’re seeing.

So, right now they’re figuring it’s a coin flip that this is still just a bad set of games, but in 10 games, the coin will definitely be bouncing towards the “this is how it is” side.

Man, I love coin flips

All the important decisions should be made with coin flips.

Tails Never Fails

And all experienced coin flip participants know that tails comes up way more than heads. Don’t give me that “independent variable” nonsense: tails never fails.

maybe I'm the only one

But that’s kinda awesome in a weird way.

I personally

dig this train wreck. I figure this is the year I earn my street cred as a Padres fan. When the Padres have dropped 60 in a row, people will see me wearing a Padres caps on the street and be like “OMG, I saw a guy who is actually a Padres fan.” Then I’m hoping it will be like the movie Invincible where new Padres manager Tony Gwynn, in an effort to shake things up, calls for open tryouts and I get to make the team and bring hope back to Padres fans.

Although in all seriousness, I think I like it from the standpoint that it forces KT’s hand to make a move, and maybe even one he might have to spent some money for. Plus now, when the Padres win, it is a pleasant surprise.

you and both, sacpadre

we’ll be like the old guys in the empty stands of Gaslamp Ball, watching the team play while everybody else ignores them.

I will be there

the difference is that I drink enough, that I actually think we are winning every game.

Kidding me?

You guys can’t see me with my padres hat, shirt, official on field jacket, and socks in front of the TV every game. I’m like the guys in the outfield bleachers in the movie Major League

Really?

You haven’t said one positive thing about the Padres in months. I know you follow them, but are you a fan only when they are winning?

by jbox on May 2, 2008 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

It is a nessasary condition to say positive things about things that you like?

Spending Money?

Aren’t the expensive guys causing the losing problems? How would spending money help? Bring in more overpaid crappy guys? The sooner the Padres fans realizes that the next San Diego star won’t being coming via a big free agent (or trade) contract, the better.

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

It's easy to say "spend money"

And never throw out an idea as to who you want, their availability, etc…

Want Frank Thomas? He was the most recent available name, right?

I'll raise you.

I’m going to buy a new Padre hat (need the new BP one), that way people think I’m batshiat crazy.

Reluctant to crown us.

Quick to tank us.
