Open Thread: 5/15, Padres vs. Cubs

San Diego Padres @ Chicago Cubs

Son of a -

I almost forgot there was a game today.  I like this line up a little bit better.

Maddux vs. Dempster

Go Padres!

This stupid widget is messed up again.  Only 8 people in the line up!  Curse you 2.0!

And our bullpen regressed. Bradley and Cameron were probably good for 20 home runs apiece.

Also, Bud Black has been making very questionable decisions.

A case study in bad luck:

He’s averaging 3.7 P/PA this year, which is his career average. He’s striking out about as often as last year.

But:

His BABIP is a ridiculously low .244, which is well under his career average of .276. His line-drive rate is 21.3%, the second highest of his career.

Obsessed

You guys are obsessed with Headley, he’s not going to fix the problem and he’s still learning to be a left fielder. I am sick of it! Talk about undue pressure, he doesn’t need to come up during this mess! He strikes out a ton, too, remember that. And he’s only hitting AAA pitching, not major league ones.

He is not coming up to be the savior of the team.

He is coming up to get a shot at extended playing time in the bigs. I would rather him go through major league hiccups now when the team sucks, rather than at a time when we could be contending.

You may be one of the few that feels that way. The way most of the media and fans on the call in radio shows are talking, they are seeing him as the savior, whether they say it directly or not. (most of them do) And he would put the pressure on himself and overswing. I saw him to it in spring training.

Me fail English? That's unpossible!

by sdsuaztec4 on May 15, 2008 1:17 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok

If you are basing your results on spring training stats- Chase was tied for the team lead in HR and was hitting above .320 if I remember correctly.

If people are seeing him as the savior of the team, they will not be satisfied if he does anything other than immediately tear up major league pitching, which is unrealistic to expect from anyone. People are dumb to attach that kind of responsibility to a kid who has not spent extended time in the major leagues and need to understand that there will most likely be major league growing pains, no matter how long someone spends in the minors before moving up.

90% of sports talk radio callers are off point in their assumptions and for 90% of sportswriters are speculators who stir up stories and play up drama to make for a better read. They are the people who will attach that kind of pressure to Chase and hate him when he comes out of the gate slower than they expected.

And as SDSU says, our entire team is overswinging right now. One of the padres who has looked most comfortable at the plate lately has been Gerut.

We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
