SLPiH - #350 Edition

Greg Maddux is a 350 game winner.

Now that Mad Dog has won #350, Tim Sullivan wants to trade him. I guess I would tag that: "articles that could have been written on any other day but this one...are you turning into Canepa?"

Mark Prior will be in San Diego today to be examined by team doctors. "I think you can call it a setback," San Diego manager Bud Black said, "but we'll know more [Sunday]."

Chase is a patient Beaver.

The bullpen is changing . Henn is in. Rusch is out. Thatcher could be next as a trade for a reliever is imminent.

CY vs. Greg Reynolds. First pitch is at 1:05pm.

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible moms here on the GLB. Guys, call your mom and buy a pink bat.

This reliever trade has me curious

You would think it’s either an expensive guy in the last year of the deal that a team is tired of, or a diamond in the rough in AAA, Heat Bell style. Most teams don’t like to give up their relief pitching depth without something substantial in return.

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

Padres make a trade with the Red Sox

Padres acquire Bryan Corey.

The Padres acquired right-handed reliever Bryan Corey from the Red Sox on Sunday and demoted left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher to Triple-A Portland. Corey, 34, has a career ERA of 4.40 with 39 strikeouts and 24 walks in 59.1 innings. This season with Boston he allowed 11 hits and seven earned runs in six innings.

The Red Sox will get cash or a player to be named later.

Corey

I remember watching some Red Sox ST games and this guy Corey was doing really well, but the Sox didn’t see how they could make room for him. They were talking about trading him, but no one would bite (until now). Definitely a Heat Bell style pickup (with some extra vintage). Not a lot to love, but you can’t do much worse than Thatcher at this point. Also, Corey is a SoCal guy (shocker).

The Sullivan article

While I don’t disagree necessarily with anything said in the article, it just feels like he was holding onto until he won his 350th and I think that’s a pretty crappy thing to do. If Maddux wants to be traded, I’d hope the FO would attempt to accommodate him to a reasonable degree. I would really hate seeing him go, but he’s earned the right to do whatever he wants at this point.

I hate this stuff

Maddux has said many times how much he likes being here. I specifically remember him saying that playing for San Diego has been the most fun he’s had in his career. Maddux probably doesn’t even care that he’s got 350 wins, and he probably doesn’t even care that he’s playing for a team currently below .500. Why is everyone suddenly making him out to be some cocky, proud character, solely interested in playing for a contender? He’s happy here, if the guy gave a shit, he wouldn’t have played for our team during his run for 350 wins.

You're missing the point

I don’t think you could be any more wrong in saying he probably doesn’t even care that he’s playing for a team currently below .500. He’s a competitor and he’s not just out there to spin his wheels. If he didn’t care about winning, he would’ve retired prior to last year. No has called him out as cocky or proud or any of the other things you’re suggesting. But it would be understandable if a guy at his stage in this career might want to go to a contender for one last shot. I assume that’s part of the reason he signed with SD last yr – he thought the team was positioned to compete and they did. Things are, uh, a bit different this year and if the opportunity presented itself, it would make sense that he might be interested.

No, I get it

Currently, we’re a losing team, but I would put as in as a wild card contender at the very least, and Maddux would still be interested in that. I agree with you, he’s a competitor (of course) and spinning his wheels with five attempts at win 350 is more than an annoyance… but in his competitive nature I’m sure he’s willing to play for the underdog and see if he can help turn this thing around for a playoff spot. If the Padres succeed in that, well, what a way to go out.

Corey turned in an un-Thatcher-like performance

Never did I think we’d drop both Rusch and Thatcher. Is it my birthday?

The fan was treated and released? So, she’s okay? Where’s our pun-tastic headline?
“Chin up” or “Chin Music” would have been appropriately tasteless.

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.
