Annoying
I find it annoying and irritating how everyone keeps saying we don’t have a big bat in the lineup. Adrian Gonzalez is our big bat. He is hitting .303/.350/.542 with an OPS+ of 144, and an EqA of .316. Unfortunately, like pretty much everyone, his road splits are so much better than his home splits.

You're lucky!
That you put that smiley face in there, otherwise I would have hit the Ban Dex button…oh wait, I’m not the one with that power. Dammit.
My point was more along the lines of you can’t blame this on not having a big bat in the lineup, and the solution ISN’T to go out and overspend on a power guy. You have him, you just need to surround him with the right guys.

we need another power guy
A good lineup would have at least a couple of guys like A-Go. Everybody knows that you can’t just have the one bat. You need somebody protecting him.
I’ll disagree with people saying we don’t have a big bat in the lineup. However, I’ll also disagree that we don’t need another one.

teams that don’t have two usually at least have a lead-off pesky guy who gets on base a lot and at least is a threat to steal. giles is not that person and tadahito is streaky

The arb clock on Headley
I’m pretty sure that’s the reason he isn’t up yet – but I agree with not bringing him up this weekend for exactly the reasons KT brings up. We’ve built him up into this god-like figure because its been so long since we’ve been really excited about a guy from our farm system. If he went hitless in his first two games, the criticism would be merciless and the pressure would increase exponentially every time he came to the plate. I don’t wanna see that. Let’s settle into last place, get comfortable with the fact that this is going to be bad year and bring him up in June when no one gives a crap anymore.
BTW – I think Black’s job is going to be in jeopardy by the All-Star break. The schedule from here to early July is really tough, particularly our interleague games, and our record by mid-July could be insanely awful. There aren’t going to be anymore moves to make to shake things up by then. Again – I don’t advocate firing managers in mid-season, but if they continue to play like they are, he’s gonna be in trouble.

I totally agree. Towers doesn’t seem to be putting a spin on this. There is no point in forcing the youngsters at this point. Like WG said, let people adjust to the fact that the season is lost, and then the expectations won’t be out of control and people can enjoy watching the new guys develop. Rushing them up won’t help anyone.
In a very Khalil like way, this lost season may end up being a boon. The padres can commit to letting the rookies develop without too much riding on their shoulders. It will force the FO to let our team develop, and maybe save up some money to being competitive when they are ready to bust out.

I don't know about you guys...
But I’m keeping a picture of Jim Edmonds so that I’ll never complain about anything Jody Gerut ever does. First to third put-out of Helton last night? That was a $6mil play. :)
If/when Headley gets here, I will do the same with PMac.

Haha
Why do people keep bagging so hard on PMac? He is actually batting ok , and I would personally like to see him get the LF job full time until Headley takes over.

Effort on my own part
To not put pressure anywhere. I can always go, “Well it could still be blank out there…”
Yeah, PMac hits and walks, but he’s AAAA. With his fielding, he would be best suited hidden out in left, and he doesn’t quite have the offensive production to justify winning the position. (imo)

True
Pmacs splits are interesting though. At home he is hitting .229/.386/.257. That is a great OBP, but a miserable Slugging. On the road he is hitting .233/.314/.500. Wow. I wonder if this approach is a deliberate strategy, or just pure luck. Instead of trying to beat Petco, he is just getting on base anyway he can. Then on the road, he hits with more power. It’s also worth noting that his BABIP on the road is an extremely low .208. Again, wow. If that BABIP was more reasonable, he would probably be hitting as well as Agon on the road. And while that home slugging is terrible, maybe it will come up a bit when the weather and offense warms up at Petco. This is why I would like to see him in the lineup regularly. I like the approach he is taking. If it is a deliberate attempt to adjust to hitting at Petco, I think it is one that more Padres hitters should take.

SSS Warning
Both those home and road splits are far too small a sample to reach any reasonable conclusion. The main problem with PMac is his age. If he were a younger ballplayer it would be worth the development time to what those numbers really become, but realistically he’s already peaked and his peak just doesn’t seem to be of enough value for even a platoon LF. Some call this AAAA, I actually think it’s more 5th OF/designated LHPH, but maybe that’s the same thing. He’s slightly above replacement level, but for a team like the Padres that’s a luxury item, they need more production out of LF.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

Jake Peavy
Is our third highest offensive player by VORP, so we’ll take what we can get.

I'm just saying
We need more upside out of the position. If the rest of the offense was fine I wouldn’t quibble over an above replacement level starter, but when you need more than a band aid, that kind of player won’t do.
