It was Trevor. However, Khalil is turning into a bust rather quickly. Thats the second game Wolf deserved to win. We keep getting lots of hits but not lots of runs. And I can't believe Jimmy Baseball "stole" a base. Wow.

How do..
According to MLB.com the Padres left 28 men on base tonight compared to San Francisco's 13. Good grief. What a fluke win by the Giants. Looking for a big bounceback tomorrow from Germano.

Such a frustrating loss
Those fans at the game last night were so excited for their second win, you would have sworn they had won the World Series. I on the other hand was fired up. How do we get 13 hits and two runs? We should have owned them. On a different note, we need Lincecum. That kid is on fire. We were watching the MPH board and everything was clocking in around the 97 range. Wish the Giants would run a fire sale so we could grab him and Cain.
LOL
Trust me, if the Giants have a fire sale, Lincecum and Cain are the only two players they won't part with. You can gladly have Dave Roberts back, though. Seriously. Take 'em. Won't even charge you. He's a gamer! He's got swagger! Shiny, shiny!

Completely Disagree
The only guys that would return any value would be Lincecum and Cain. It's like the A's, they had to trade their two best players to rebuild because nobody wants Crosby, Chavez, Harden or Street. Sure they traded away Kotsay, but all they got back was a broken down amateur closer. Although, the Cubs were nice enough to give up a real pitching prospect for the remains of Jason Kendall.
If the Giants want to build for the future it would be wise to trade away Lincecum or Cain. The package similar to what the A's got for Haren would make the Giants way better off then if they kept both of them. The problem with the Giants is that they think their fans want to see the wily veterans and the promising young pitchers. But, I think the Giants just want a chance at winning in the near future.
And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the scored tied and Thatcher struggling.

As a Giants fan *ducks* I'm going to have to say you're dead on with that assessment. It's unfortunate that management won't accept suckitude for a couple years by playing semi-prospects to see what they've got. Playing Aurilia/Roberts/Durham or playing Lewis/Velez/Ortmeir will both result in losing. However we can at least evaluate if the younger guys will be part of the future of this team.
You would be correct that Cain and Lincecum would be the only players that would return much value. The problem is that they are the only hope and future of this team, and the fan base that has put up with so much thus far would be completely rabid if they were traded away in a fire sale. Plus you have to consider that if by some stroke of luck the excellent position prospects they have around Single-A ball (Villanola, Noonan, Fairley, etc.) actually pan out and provide some offense for the major league club in say 3-4 years, I see very few if any teams that could compete with a playoff rotation of Lincecum/Cain/ throw-in third starter.
Anyway, that's just a Giants fan's $.02 on the state of the organization and why Lincecum and Cain cannot be traded.

you'd think....
you'd kinda think that the giants would take a cue from across the bay and just throw a little more money at it if that makes any sense. really focus on identifying talent, but also use their money advantage to make big signings as needed. it seems like it should be straightforward, but what do i know.
Wait wait wait...
We did make big signings when needed!
Barry Zito!....oh wait, our only strength was pitching.
Aaron Rowand!....wait...we already had 5 mediocre CFs.
Damnit.

One quibble
The only problem, and I hate to break this to you, is that there is no hope. So you're thoughts about Cain and Lincecum being the only hope is a little too optimistic.
Also, Lewis/Velez/Ortmeier aren't even semi prospects. Lewis is 27 years old, so he no longer has any upside. Velez is 26 and his game is based on speed, there's no real future there either (although he's probably the best of the bunch). Ortmeier is also 27 and doesn't really have enough power for a LF/1B. Rajai Davis is also 27. It's pretty ridiculous how old their young guys are. Basically the only argument for playing these guys would be if they had never signed Roberts/Winn/Rowand/Durham/Aurilia/Vizquel because then they could afford to bring in real talent without much loss between the cheaper guys and the expensive guys. At this point though it really doesn't matter. Maybe you get lucky and a guy has a career year and you can trade him to some dumb team, but it seems almost as likely that would come from an expensive guy as a cheap guy. It's really ugly, man.
And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the scored tied and Thatcher struggling.
No hope?
Did you or did you not see Lincecum mow down your team last night? These guys are flamethrowers with pretty damned good 2nd and 3rd pitches. If that's not hope, I don't know what is. If you mean overall, as a team, though, I'd agree, they have little to no hope in the next few years. We can, however, look forward to 2 out of every 5 games during the year.
Lewis has no upside just because he's a few years older than the golden "prospect" age? Remember, he played football for most of his younger years, so he may not have hit his peak as a baseball prospect yet. And the little time he's had in the majors, he's shown some good things. I wouldn't be so dismissive of him. Future all-star? Absolutely not. Future decent OF? Possibly.

I agree with you
As much as we'd like to wish for seeing Lincecum and/or Cain in SD, I can't see Sabean dumping them - that wouldn't just be a fire-sale; that would be a complete decimation of the organization and if he thinks SF fans are irritated now, I can't imagine the kind of long-term damage he'd do to the team and the fan base by getting rid of two young guys like that, regardless of the reasoning.
by Winfield's Ghost on Apr 9, 2008 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
That's what they pay the PR guy for
I just don't see what keeping Cain and Lincecum does for you other than waste 5 years of their careers playing for losers. The Giants won't be ready to contend when they hit free agency and why on earth would they want to stay? Their value is highest now, it's time to trade at least one of them. You gotta treat the fans as adults and let them now that this is the best way to build a team that will be competitive faster.
As for the Padres getting Lincecum or Cain, I don't think we have the prospects to be in the ballpark. Maybe Antonelli, Headley and Latos would get us close, but there is no way we'd do that.
And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the scored tied and Thatcher struggling.
Why do you assume they won't contend in 5 years?
I'll give you that the next few years look bleak, but their Single-A team has some very good prospects. Durham, Roberts, Aurilia, Winn, and Molina all come off the books in the next 3 years, just in time for these prospects to make their way to the Giants, as well as freeing up some money to add a couple key free agents (not that they've been great at doing this, granted, but it's theoretically possible). In 5 years they could be a much different-looking team and I think it's quite hard to write them off so soon.
Would I have guessed around 2002 that San Diego would dominate the division the way it generally has over the past few years? Not at all. You just can't guess what will happen in 5 years.
Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue...
by UnleashTheGore on Apr 9, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Eh
The Padres were competitive in 2004 and would have been in 03 if not for injuries. I think it was obvious to most that they would be a good team in the coming years. Not a good comparison. In 5 years a couple of those single A guys will trickle up to the majors. Villalona, Sosa and probably one of their 2007 draft pick pitchers might be ready by then. That's really not enough to contend with Lincecum and Cain. The Rowand and Zito contracts will be big burdens by them. It's pretty unrealistic to think that an organization that doesn't have a farm produced major league regular hitter currently playing can produce a whole team of them in 5 years, let alone a contending team. Most teams are lucky to product 2-3 guys a year. The Giants are asking to basically develop 20 in the next 5 to be competitive. I know, I know there is free agency, but that usually doesn't play out well when you are cellar dweller.
And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the score tied and Thatcher struggling.
The GM is generally the PR guy
I hear what you're saying - I just think its unlikely that they'd ditch them. I think they'll hang on to them and see if they can get some of the younger guys in their system to come thru faster or grab some younger guys elsewhere on the cheap. With two arms like that, you always have hope and they give you an anchor to try and rebuild the team.
