MLB.TV Question
Alright. So as I have bitched about repeatedly on this site, my home in North County gets DirecTV and not Cox Cable- thus rendering me unable to get Channel 4 and any Padres broadcasts, ever.
My parents have decided to bite the bullet and get either MLB.TV or DirecTV's MLB Extra Innings for this season; obviously, I am pulling for MLB.TV, as it would allow me to access the broadcasts while I am off at college. But, if my parents live in North County and they buy MLB.TV, aren't they blacked out for every Padres game (or, at the very least, every home game)? That would obviously lead to a purchase of Extra Innings and very little baseball for me. Please help, Ballers!

You can use mine.
As I recall from last year, two people can be logged on to it at once. I'm registered to only get Reds and Pirates games blacked out. Probably Indians, too but I never checked to see since I don't give a toss.

That would be amazing.
I would really appreciate that, and you know where to send the information regarding mlb.tv if my subscription attempt falls through.
And do you personally get all Reds and Pirates games blacked out, or just all Reds and Pirates home games blacked out?

I'm not sure.
I just know that when either of them play the Pads I watch it on TV.

If you can't manage the back door
You're going to have 2 challenges: 1) the zip code of your credit card that you pay for MLB.tv with, and (if I remember correctly) 2) the zip code of your ISP. The one is easier to fix than the other.
As painful as it may be, your parents will probably find that they have to get Extra Innings if they want to watch the Padres in North County. You, on the otherhand, will probably be able to use MLB.tv, but only if you have a credit card with a billing address to your school (assuming school is out-of-market) and only if you're logged in at school and not at the 'rents' house.
Good luck.

I'm not supposed
to get the Padres, but I do. If I put in my ZIP in MLB.com, I'm supposed to be blacked out (which makes no sense since Riverside County is an LA market, not a San Diego one).
North County probably won't get games, though.

Yeah you are right
The ISP thing is fixable, and i know a guy who is down to help with that particular obstacle. ha.
My friend that goes to school at Sac State had a problem like you mentioned- he ordered the season pass at college, not thinking ahead, and when he came home for the summer, he found that he had wasted like three months of money on games he couldn't get. I laughed at him, but now that i am in a similar boat, its not very funny.

Just out of curiosity...
Does anyone here have or know anyone who has Slingbox?

Here's how it works...
MLB.TV benefits:
- the quality's gone up this year, and I can now watch a game (pc's video card > s video out > my tv) that looks better than what I'd get on a standard-def cable channel.
- if MLB.TV thinks that you're not in the united states, japan, canada, guam, u.s. virgin islands, or south korea, you'll have access to any game, regardless of blackout rules. i'll leave that to you to figure out how to do that, but it's something people do all the time.
- you also get access to mlb.com gameday audio, which is handy when you're working or something like that and can't watch the game, but still want to be able to listen in.
- if you purchase for this year (and assuming they haven't changed their plans), you'll be able to watch the World Baseball Classic games next year as part of the 2008 mlb season purchase.
MLB.TV downsides:
- if you live in North County, I can about 99% guarantee you that you'll be unable to watch Padres games on either MLB.TV or Extra Innings unless you do as I mentioned above. I've been under the impression that extra innings doesn't carry any Channel 4 broadcasts, which means any padres games where the opponent isn't televising the game won't be seen, and it may even black out Padres games for people in San Diego regardless of if they're playing an away game or not. That's something I'm not too sure about. MLB.TV, for what it's worth, carries Channel 4's broadcasts as much as any other channel.
- if you don't have a way to connect a PC to your TV, you'd be stuck at your computer watching games...it's not horrible, but it's nice to sit in a place where your TV's at and watch some ball.
Basically, you at least have a fighting chance with MLB.TV of watching Padres games anywhere you're at, and the same can't be said for Extra Innings.

I watched one MLB.TV feed on Opening Day...
and I was absolutely satisfied with the quality- it was like watching standard-def channel 4 on my laptop (and having Matty to call the game was awesome). The gameday audio would also be awesome when i actually have a job this summer, no doubt.
As i mentioned above, i know there are ways around the zip code restriction and i am actively looking into them ha.

Thank you everybody for your input.
Much appreciated. I was super busy yesterday- my best friend just graduated from marine boot camp at MCRD yesterday morning and is home for ten days- so i didn't get a chance to respond to all the comments right away, but i saw them eventually ha. Thanks again!
