Smells Like Padres in Here - Monday Edition

Gooch hits the walk-off Saturday, but MVP loses  to Webb  yesterday.

Good article on Colt Morton.  (I hope Harry is gonna start using him a bit more after he showed he could handle back-up duties on Saturday.)

Sullivan states the obvious.

Clemens is such a piece of crap.  (I'm not sure if this is true, but a guy can hope.)

Off day today and the bullpen is happy.  And so am I.  This place hasn't been much fun lately.  Yeah, all the losing really sucks, but all of the sniping and bitchiness that's been exhibited around here (myself included) has made it even worse.  We sound like a bunch of spoiled brats, whining and crying when for what seems like for the first time in nearly four years, our team may not be as good as we'd like it to be.  I have no stake in GLB.  I hang out here to commiserate, to share in good times and bad and to laugh at both the good and the bad and to avoid doing the things I'm supposed to be doing  - not to see the whole place dissolve into a trough of self-pity and nastiness.

So let's gather ourselves today.  Let's find the fun again, regardless of how this team performs.  Let's rally around the month of May.  I don't care if we only score seven runs in the next twenty games - LET'S HAVE FUN DAMMIT!!!

Ouch

From the Sullivan article:

Third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, who hit fourth yesterday, last drove in a run on April 15. The lone run the Padres scored was produced on a sacrifice fly by fifth-place hitter Jim Edmonds, he of the .164 batting average.

Good times.

Do you know what could really boost morale around here? Considering a Padres Fire Sale.

Yay!

It's not really a fire sale

Since almost none of the guys mentioned will be on the team next year. I’ve already thought of some of these scenarios. Maddux makes a lot of sense for a contending team with a 3-4th starter need, but most teams won’t go externally for that until the deadline (unless he’s cheap, which from the Padres perspective defeats the purpose). Same mostly goes for Wolf although there’s probably a team or two that will squint, see a #2 and be willing to part with a prospect (I’m looking at you Philly). Edmonds and Giles have almost 0 value one due to ineffectiveness and the other due to price. Trading Giles makes a lot of sense since he will cost $3 mill to release next year or $9 mill to keep (but trading partners will be wary of this as well). Greene would make sense for a small ballpark team with a need for a SS in 08 and 09, but we also have a need for an SS in 09, so the Padres would have to get something they couldn’t refuse, such as an elite CF or RF prospect. That scenario seems unlikely (especially because I can’t even find a team with the needs/prospects to start a rumor with). I could see us dealing Iguchi for some spare parts (young middle reliever?) if we are going to be a loser since we have a number of internal guys that can play the position (Gonzalez, Stansberry, Antonelli) well enough to ride out a losing season. Bard is another possibility since Hundley and Morton are internal options coming on strong, but the troubles with throwing out runners has hurt his value.

Overall, a “fire sale” isn’t very promising, but if we are out of it by late July there are options to be had. At this point, with some young guys coming soon and some older guys on the big league roster, I’m for getting value where we can, except for trading Greene, I just don’t see that playing out well.

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

Wow

Just read like a dozen comments on the linked site and realized that basically everything I just said was brought up there. I either feel really smart or really dumb.

May

isn’t May our month? don’t we rely on May to make us a respectable team? why aren’t more people bringing this up? this team is built for May!

exactly

may is on thursday. i definitely do have hope for this team. although it’s been a rough month and though i can honestly say that i’ve probably watched less than 5 complete games so far this season, i haven’t completely lost faith. it’s just been way too painful to watch the games. i’m in no mood to be having heart attacks every single night. a fire sale sounds good right about now. i think the pads should go for it. hahaha.

i disagree

i hated when this team was terrible. and although this opinion might be unpopular right now, i think trevor deserves better than that. he deserves for the team to at least try and put a winning product on the first for what is probably his final year. he doesn’t have to be the closer or even the setup guy, but he deserves to not sit through a rebuilding season in his last year.

i haven’t been a padres fan as long as many of the people on GLB, but i still had my season tickets after finley, gwynn, cammy, vaughn, brown, ashby and everyone left after 1998. i hated seeing villafuerte “closing” games and eric owens being the only reason to cheer. we have one of the nicest ballparks in the league and are one of the bigger cities in the league. rebuild after this year. or get rid of the pieces slowly. firesales always start about 4-5 years of really bad baseball, and i’m not ready to accept that yet.

oh

i was totally joking about the firesale. hahaha.

it aint over yet

The Padres were 11-13 in April in 2005, and 9-15 in April in 2006. Those years turned out pretty well.

Of course, neither year saw a first-place start like Arizona has had this year. And while this team can’t hit with runners on, it “feels” like they are actually getting more guys on, they just aren’t getting them in.

That said, unless Arizona really is the team we’re seeing (possible), then all hope isn’t lost.

My biggest concern before the season – and still now – is the bullpen. The offense will be fine. Too bad the Padres don’t hit up Colorado til June or so, that always kicks ‘em into high gear.
