Is Gaslamp Ball a bust?

Three weeks into the season, I find myself getting more and more frustrated with the blog production of gaslampball.com. I think now is a good time to take a hard look at their career in a Padres uniform.

Batting Average: Over the last few games we have seen wrong lineups posted, we have seen plain no-shows (due to "techinical difficulties"...aka Outfit Shopping I am sure"), and just plain lack of hustle as evidenced by things such as "Padres are rad, blah blah blah they'll beat the Astros blah blah blah.  [Insert Amazing statistical evidence here]". Please.

Decline: Look at the evidence I just gave you. What's scary is that GLB isn't improving every season...they are actually getting worse with each season. Does the blame lay with the "coaching staff" or GLB itself?

Power: The managements reluctance to bring in some heavy hitting interviews around here is really starting to cost the team. The lack of interviews with guys such as Clay "Ratfink" Hensley, and Claw Meredith I believe has directly lead to our loss of the 18YOGP. There feeble attempts to "reclassify them all as gaslamp ball girl posse" just shows where management stands. They don't even bother to hide the fact that it's just so they don't have to produce more styles of  t shirts. It doesn't change the fact that the GLBGP just isn't showing up to the games.

Petco Park: GLB is awful at home. They do things like insult awesome human individuals like Jayson Werth, kiss PSAs butt for free water (yet no hard hitting interview), and refuse to sign autographs for anyone. Then their groundscrew is busy cleaning up the Open Threads as soon as the game is over.

Curt Schilling?!?! Exactly

Injuries: I hate to even bring it up again...but it's impossible to ignore. GLB has only played in 121 games in each of the last two seasons. Which leaves us with a sdsuaztec4-type player starting the other 40 or so Open Threads. Can they withstand a full season in the majors? Are they capable of giving us 150 games or more?

FrequentGLBers Program What happened to the loyalty program? Where are my GLBbux? Where are the tshirts? Obviously they don't care about the fans. Next they will announce that it will cost $10 to be able to make posts each season.

Lack of Respect Broken Jake bobblehead. Need I say more? And they keep letting that cat show up around here.

Also, what's with the lack of appearances by the Rally Unicorn? Why do they refuse to let the up and coming stars play, yet keep giving at bats to washed up veterans? Maybe we should trade them while we have a chance, before the rest of SB*Nation figures out that they are a bust. We can probably get something of value for them still. If we get a reasonable offer before the trade deadline, are they gone?

Best. FanPost. Ever.

”...which leaves us with a sdsuaztec4-type player…” was far and away my favorite line.

Well done, osbug!! Get this man his GLBux!!!

Giving this some more thought

“Why do they refuse to let the up and coming stars play, yet keep giving at bats to washed up veterans? Maybe we should trade them while we have a chance…”

I agree to a pt, but here’s the problem. The market for Drama is thin – I don’t think we would get much in return. His weaknesses have been on full display thus far and its clear he’s not the guy we saw a year ago. But I think the only thing we might be able to get in return would be a DbacksSkins-type commenter and as much as Drama has sucked so far this season, that guy is hundred times worse and I’d rather see Drama struggle and hope he can return to form.

I knew

somebody would start putting names to the Washed Up Veterans. Unlike GLB and their totalitarian letters to Bud Black, I think the community should have a bigger voice. I think Drama has something left in the tank. Maybe we can trade him for DodgerBlueBalls. Yes, he probably wouldn’t get along with most of the clubhouse, but at least their would be less PFOB for Penny around here. I am sure all that PFOB contributed to the departure of the GLBGP.

by osbug on Apr 24, 2008 7:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, sure

If I thought we could get DodgerBlueBalls, then I’d be interested. But I think you are way overestimating Drama’s value at this point. I mean, that Frank Thomas post was horrific and everyone saw it. I think any potential interest was killed off right then.

Isn't it Ironic?

As much joy as the original Bust thread continues to bring us, I would like to point out the true significance of it. That was the thread that got Phantom to join GLB. Definitely the high point of Drama’s career. Ironically, he continues to take away ABs from Phantom.

Maybe if we include Wiggins we can get DodgerBlueBalls. After all, he is starting to show his true colors with his latest fanpost, and maybe it will help get the charges dropped. We can then sign Wiggins’ Mom, and maybe she can help solve the Trevor problem.

The Curse of Wiggins

I’m pretty sure that trading Wiggins is the worst thing GLB could possibly do.

He is

like the Milton Bradley of Gaslamp Ball. He is a heavy hitter while he is here, but he is constantly on the DL because he is spending time in jail, or grounded, or on the bus.

Probably like the Trevor Hoffman

We don’t know what GLB would be like without you, and you’ve been such an amazing part of the organization, but recently you keep going out there and blowing your chances. It hurts to keep hoping. . . .

I dunno

I don’t see DodgerBlueBalls having any less PFOB for Penny than Drama has. I think we’d be better off looking at a multi poster trade for a Richard Wade style blogger (or Simers even?), shake things up a bit, let people know we mean business.
WG is right though interest for drama could be dwindling, even his Flirt Lair is limited these days. Not to mention the recent “2008 GLB Predictions” which could easily be re-labeled, “Duh 38 ways to state the bleedin’ obvious”!

No chance

You guys couldn’t put together a package that we’d consider in trade for DbacksSkins. Just look at his numbers- the guy comments for a pretty good average, he’s got moderate power, good in-post leadership, and proven post-season experience. Plus, he can switch-comment, so it doesn’t matter if you’re a left-handed or right-handed poster, he’s ready for it. And you can’t over-rate the role of the veteran presence- or maybe, given the signing of Tony Clark, the Padres can. Hmm. Either way, no deal.

I'm actually flattered

that somebody would take up my case.

I would only seek to add that I’ve posted in MANY stadiums…... the ‘Pit, GLB, TrueBlueLA, McCoveyChronicles, Purple Row, Bleed Cubbie Blue, Athletics Nation, Camden Chat, etc., etc.; so I’ve already proved that I can post in any stadium. Heck—I’ve posted at Hogs Haven too, so I can even hit in a football stadium.

But I’ll give the Dbacks the hometown discount. So, be careful what you do….

I've always loved

that there’s half a beer in the background. Just a guy, hangin’ out, gettin’ drunk and putting helmets on his cat.

Or sometimes I think the cat is drunk, and that’s why his helmet is on sideways.

Not even a warning or a 25 game suspension so I could explain that my post was tainted by an outside source?

Have you ever banned anyone from here?

God I love this place

I woke up in such a terrible mood this morning after last night’s game. I hate that I haven’t been able to participate as much this year (stupid life!), but GLB is always a good place to get my head right about this team.

Me too!!

It’s funny because last night my boyfriend asked me if I wanted season tickets again (I think he was thinking that would be a good gift to give me as he knows that $$ had a lot to do with why I did not renew again last year). And I said to him…”Honey, other than the three home games I’ve attended..of which two were free…I have not watch a single Padres game start to finish yet this season. I have NO TIME to go to games. I have no time to play in the open threads on Gaslamp even if I can watch on tv…ticket money spent on me would be a waste for at least another two years.” So..yeah…I hear ya on life interrupting my Padre fan status. Given the team’s overall suckage so far, maybe that’s not so bad. BUT….given how much I love this site, I am missing posts just like THIS which will, I know, make the possible horrible season seem not so bad.

long way of saying, great post!!

Hmmm....
Given the team’s overall suckage so far, maybe that’s not so bad.

Maybe…just MAYBE…there suckatude is partly because of you lack of posting? Maybe they just aren’t inspired enough? Come to think of it…maybe that is why GLB’s offense is down this season too…

Then we are in some serious trouble!!

My availability for baseball wont open up until late June!!! We’ll be 40 games back by then ;-)

Me too!

I really really wish I could be here more. I always have so much fun talking to everyone, no matter how bad my boys are doing. Senior year, getting ready for college, working, family….everything has me so busy! The problem is I get home at like 9ish every night that I have to TiVo the games and I dont want to go to GLB because I dont want to know what happens before I watch it. But I actually I have been at the games too, so I cant be on the computer. You see how that works? So yeah…thats my justification. I will have a good talk with padparazzi and we will vow to come back. I will try harder I promise!

And who tried to name is the Gaslamp Ball Girl Posse?

gaslamp ball girl posse?

i thought we were the 18yods. haha. i’ve been watching all the games since i got back from france. i’ve just been slacking off in posting.. as well as my school work. my senioritis is getting bad… i’ve also been pretty busy w/ all the college stuff & just finishing my senior year that i haven’t gone to a game this season!! =[

since i’ll have a long summer break…. i promise all of you that the 18yods will come back. ;) i’m going to sdsu. so you’ll hear more from us soon. i’ll write a “diary” as soon as i go to a game.
