San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks, Apr 20, 2008 1:10 PM PDT

And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

The Padres are now entering the Suck.

Evidence?  There are only two balls that have any business being between Khalil's legs, period.

A storm is coming at 1:10pm, I suggest you find shelter.

Randy Wolf vs. Randy Johnson

Go Padres!  Fight the urge to suck!

Plus I don’t think a rookie Chase Headley is any better than the guys we got. In 2009 or 2010 then definitely.

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

by Wonko on Apr 20, 2008 2:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

I think despite his inexperience in the outfield, that a lineup of Headley LF- Hairy CF- Giles RF is better than PMac-Edmonds-Giles (or Hairy-Edmonds-Giles) (or PMac-Edmonds-Hairy).

Right now, he would be an above average 6-7 hitter with good power for the big club (and obvious upside to get far better in the next couple of years). We need to get him big league AB’s now to have him develop into the player he has the potential to be.

They will not play Shrek everyday in Center

So if you want Headley he has to be better than Hairston, not Edmonds.

look at it this way

is he going to get called up any time this year? if the answer is yes, then better to call him up now when he can make a difference if he succeeds and when fans wouldn’t really notice if he sucked.

by Dex on Apr 20, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

True

I am excited to see what Chase can do with extended playing time. I think he is ready anyways, and at the very least, he will be playing hard with a ginormous chip on his shoulder every day.

We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox

by JBRO on Apr 20, 2008 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Devil's advocate

Not that I think he would struggle mightily in The Bigs if he were brought up now, but consider this….

IF Chase were to come up and struggle offensively and defensively, I don’t think the team would have the same amount of patience with him that they exhibited with Kouz last year. Reason being is that there are other options in LF today, unlike what we had behind Kouz at 3rd last year.

So, I find absolutely no fault in him getting his ABs (playing everyday) and LF experience (under the lights) in Portland until he is needed up here (for whatever reason).

by jpleeg2 on Apr 20, 2008 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

They should be playing Hairy every day in center.

He has better legs and better range than Edmonds does at this point in his career. How many balls have to drop within 10-15 feet of him before we make a change?

We didn't have a proven CF

Hairston and Crabbe have barely played there before this year. Edmonds was cheap (trade-wise) since he was coming off a injury-plagued year. And, he’s low risk since there is only one year left on the deal.

I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.

by Wonko on Apr 20, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Based on what we have seen out of Edmonds and Hairy this year

I think it would be dumb to not give Hairy a lot more innings in CF, almost to the point of splitting time with Edmonds (so his legs have more time to rest and he can stay healthy).

Yeah, but

we’re talking intentional vs. accidental…..

I’d rather have a rake to the face than a baseball, certainly. Less likely to break your face with a rake than a fastball.

It's called strategy

Plus, after I said that the Owings peaked at the catcher’s positioning. Back in the day that would EARN you a ball to the face.
