Open Thread: 4/20, San Diego vs. Arizona
San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks, Apr 20, 2008 1:10 PM PDT
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
The Padres are now entering the Suck.
Evidence? There are only two balls that have any business being between Khalil's legs, period.
A storm is coming at 1:10pm, I suggest you find shelter.
Randy Wolf vs. Randy Johnson
Go Padres! Fight the urge to suck!

Anyone got any idea...
why our supposed savior (chase headley) is batting 6th for Portland?

Why do you hate him so much
Last time I checked, he is on the good side.
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
I don't hate him
I hate the idea of rushing him and hurting his development. Also, I want people to more realistic in their expectations.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.
rush him
he wants to be rushed. we want to see what he’s got.
ain’t no minor leaguer sitting around thinking, “i’d really enjoy having some more developmental time”
That doesn't mean it will help him
Plus I don’t think a rookie Chase Headley is any better than the guys we got. In 2009 or 2010 then definitely.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.
I disagree
I think despite his inexperience in the outfield, that a lineup of Headley LF- Hairy CF- Giles RF is better than PMac-Edmonds-Giles (or Hairy-Edmonds-Giles) (or PMac-Edmonds-Hairy).
Right now, he would be an above average 6-7 hitter with good power for the big club (and obvious upside to get far better in the next couple of years). We need to get him big league AB’s now to have him develop into the player he has the potential to be.
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
They will not play Shrek everyday in Center
So if you want Headley he has to be better than Hairston, not Edmonds.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.
just bring him up
anybody brought up “too early” that doesn’t succeed wasn’t meant to succeed anyway. better to find out sooner rather than later.
Not at the expense of the major league team
We should just send every 1st round pick straight to the majors by that logic.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.
look at it this way
is he going to get called up any time this year? if the answer is yes, then better to call him up now when he can make a difference if he succeeds and when fans wouldn’t really notice if he sucked.
True
I am excited to see what Chase can do with extended playing time. I think he is ready anyways, and at the very least, he will be playing hard with a ginormous chip on his shoulder every day.
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
Devil's advocate
Not that I think he would struggle mightily in The Bigs if he were brought up now, but consider this….
IF Chase were to come up and struggle offensively and defensively, I don’t think the team would have the same amount of patience with him that they exhibited with Kouz last year. Reason being is that there are other options in LF today, unlike what we had behind Kouz at 3rd last year.
So, I find absolutely no fault in him getting his ABs (playing everyday) and LF experience (under the lights) in Portland until he is needed up here (for whatever reason).
They should be playing Hairy every day in center.
He has better legs and better range than Edmonds does at this point in his career. How many balls have to drop within 10-15 feet of him before we make a change?
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
But that's just a pipe dream
Realistically, it won’t happen.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.
If it makes logical sense though-
It begs the question, why the hell did we sign Edmonds?
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
We didn't know he was already dead?
by Winfield's Ghost on Apr 20, 2008 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions
We didn't have a proven CF
Hairston and Crabbe have barely played there before this year. Edmonds was cheap (trade-wise) since he was coming off a injury-plagued year. And, he’s low risk since there is only one year left on the deal.
I watched all 23 innings and all I got was this lousy signature.
Based on what we have seen out of Edmonds and Hairy this year
I think it would be dumb to not give Hairy a lot more innings in CF, almost to the point of splitting time with Edmonds (so his legs have more time to rest and he can stay healthy).

Great play Khalil!
Where has that been all season?
We've all experienced those delirious moments where one thing leads to another and you find yourself at the end of the night messing around with sheep. It's something we all have in common. -jbox
Shave it, D-bag!

good win!
wolf looked good again, though he was roughed up a bit in the end, but the d-backs have been hot. and watching hairston in center only makes it more apparent that edmonds is done…

I would say...
...that given the way we’ve been playing lately, holding us to 4 runs is still an impressive pitching performance.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
This feels like a bigger win than it probably is
But I’ll take it….I’ve been desperate for some good news, and avoiding a sweep is good news. Also, hanging some actual runs on the board.
Snaps a streak, as well.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Even the now expected bullpen implosion wasn't as...implosive
I have nightmares about seeing all these young D-back players for the coming years. But I think there’s a bit of hidden good luck in the Wild Card.
When the fans of one of your division rivals
talk about having nightmares about your players, that’s a REALLY good sign….

The series is over
how about heading back to the pit?

You're very subtle.

The streak is over.
Go shave your stupid mustache.

VIII. Chargers at Steelers -- Sunday, Nov. 16
Pittsburgh's offensive line could struggle with San Diego's pass rush. But then they would also struggle with San Diego State's pass rush.

Why's
jbox and huber one and the same, not that I’m complaining… anyone that hits homers and tosses plus ones is a hero in my book!

In all fairness,
have you seen Huber’s hair? jbox would never leave the house with that substandard coif.

I have searched
the internet for many consecutive hours now, without thought for chocolate nor jamesons and nowhere have I found a photo (good or bad haircut) that remotely (and huberistically) resembles our dashing young master jbox!
