Smells Like Padres in Here - Wednesday Edition

Two up, two down.

Nick Canepa compares Jake and Philip Rivers.   The comparison is kind of lame because there's a difference between being emotional and being a jackass.  Also irritates me that he can't write a Padres column without mentioning the Chargers.

Iguchi = Championships.

Peoria has healing powers.

Marcus is still helping us out.

Meet your 2008 Portland Beavers.

The Professor goes tonight against Wandy Rodgriguez.  7:05pm PDT

Seems like

I missed a nailbiter last nite. Nice to see us bang out 9 hits, but I think we need to score more runs off of our hits.

So far this year, we've scored 5 runs on 23 hits. Anybody know what the average breakdown between runs and hits is? So far, we're averaging a run about every 5.5 hits.

Same old song and dance routine

Huh?

Not much I can say in response except a world-weary, "uh-huh."

Uh...

...it's been TWO games!!!

Can we at least wait until June to start freaking out about this? Because we know we'll score a ton in May.

I'm not freaking out

That doesn't change the historical facts.

No freaking out here

Trust me, I'm ecstatic that we have 23 hits over the first 2 games. That's fantabulous.

This is off-topic, but I'm going to be completely screwed when it comes to judging balls off the bat this year. I had my first game at High Desert last nite and the place is so completely the anti-Petco. Guys will hit a bloop off the bat that goes to the track. Just unbelievable.

And for anyone who cares, I'm basically a member/leader of the PadSquad for the Mavericks. Gotta love me some internship.

Wait

So you're like PSA for the Mavericks? Can I get some water?

(BTW - that's way cool.)

by Winfield's Ghost on Apr 2, 2008 8:43 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think

we give out water. But we might, what the hell do I know?

I do find it interesting that I had to explain to most of the part-timers (ushers, concessions, promo people) how to read the scoreboard and what exactly a "half-inning" refers to. These are the kind of people I'll be responsible for keeping in line and keeping on task. Most of them are in high school.

Ugh.

Jake vs Rivers

Which one's emotional and which one's the jackass again?

Don't talk smack

on my boy Rivers

Weather....

If tonight's game gets rained out I will cry like sdsuaztec4 after catching freelunch flirting with matto619.

It will not be pretty.

As usual, Nick Canepa almost makes an interesting point...

...but fails:

"When you weigh the two sports on the volatility scale, it isn't close. And yet Rivers takes the heat, which makes little sense. I have no problem with players getting emotional, but football guys probably have more of a right after getting their brains scrambled into omelets."

Canepa's right on that each player's emotions should be viewed within the context of their respective sports, but I think he's missing something important.

As Canepa notes, baseball is a lot less volatile than football, so it's possible that people view Peavy's outbursts as a somewhat refreshing change from the otherwise subdued atmosphere of a baseball game. If Rivers could appear to be calm and focused within the context of his brains about to be scrambled, I think people would take note of it and appreciate it.

I think it would also help if Rivers didn't throw like a nancy boy.

also

it seems with Peavy's outbursts, the team and fans get fired up and the game gets more exciting. With Rivers' outbursts, everyone is filled with a sense of panic and fear because he looks (and plays?) like he's about to lose it.

I don't know football

or Rivers, but it seems to me that it's clear when Jake's fired up on the mound that he's not going to be having any personal physical contact with anyone else. He's on the mound. He throws the ball. The only concern is if he throws the ball at someone -- and as we all know, that can result in drama. But he's not big ole question mark out there about it. He doesn't look like or play like or even sound like a wild card when he's getting wound up. And he's smart enough to keep from getting into a fight with Blue while he's up there.

As I said, I don't know Rivers, so I don't know if it compares, but football is a lot more aggressive, so to stand out, it seems to me you'd have to be pretty extreme. Baseball's so mild, that Jake appears to be crazy compared to some. But he's pretty moderate, all things considered.
