Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

Open Thread: 4/19, Friars vs. Snakes

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks, Apr 19, 2008 5:10 PM PDT

Early game, Chris Young pitches tonight at 5:10.  Interestingly enough Young hasn't seen 5'10" since he was in kindergarten.

As you probably already know Maddux and Young switched spots in the rotation.  Apparently CY had some stiffness in his arm and problems with his delivery.  Young and pitching coach Darren Balsley were working on his mechanics between starts.  He apparently threw a side session on Wednesday.

Josh Bard will be back in the line up and behind the dish. Colt Morton will be on the pine.

Yay Padres!

I never thought it was possible for Byrnes to be any more Jeff Kent-like. I guess I was wrong.

nothing like the old swinging bunt

i wonder if you could cheat and get the same effect by smearing a little bit of vaseline on the bat… if somebody spotted the vaseline, you could blame the pitcher for throwing spitters.

Well, I can just tell you this

When I was in hs, I got into a bunch of schools – couple of Ivys, ND, SC, UofA, etc – then I made a really stupid decision to go to a small SoCal D-III to play hoops – and it was a big mistake for a lot of reasons. At the time, I felt really stupid and ending up at UCI always felt sorta weird to me. But my life would be totally different if I’d gone the original route – and I like my life now:)

By the way..

Have you been to the UCI baseball stadium lately? It has an absolutely gorgeous field now with an absolutely gorgeous (#7 ranked) team playing on it.

Baseball/Volleyball are at the top of the D1 food chain. All we need to truly be considered a powerhouse (short of adding a football team) is success on the hardwood.

I think we need to clear a roster spot (whether it be McAnulty or Edmonds) for Chase and bring him up ASAP. I don’t think he has a whole lot left to prove in the minor leagues and the lineup needs some power.

We need young guys in the clubhouse who are hungry for a shot at the big time to push the veterans. I hate the Diamondbacks- but they play like they have something to prove every night, and I think that is one of the biggest compliments you can give a team.

You know as well as I do

that there is an east coast bias in sports media anyways. I try not to let it bother me when the Padres show up in the last 5 minutes of Sportscenter or don’t show up at all. As for the “outscoring” part… it is still beyond me how the Diamondbacks did what they did last year. My feelings for the team aside (although, I am less venomous this year because that douche Valverde is gone), it is astounding that a team could win as many games as they did last year with a negative run differential.

I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED,

Also, our run diff was really only ugly early on. We fixed that down the stretch—but we had suffered so many lousy blowouts that we still ended up -20.

I know. It just seems really counterintuitive

that a team with a negative run differential of any kind could win 90 games (and, in doing so, outperform their Pythagorean W-L by 11 games). I would have laughed in your face if you had told me that before the season.

Well

My epic rant at the end of last season warrants an apology. Glad to start over and get back to baseball, and I hope this season has none of the high school bullshit that happened last year.

That being said, I will respectfully continue to hate your team, and in particular, Eric Byrnes.

Epic rant?

Should I remember it?

I can’t imagine any GLBer would launch an epic rant at any ‘Pitter besides me last season…. or else AJ…. (Dodgerhater)

Hmm ha

I believe it was in the game thread for game 163. It was rather nasty and contained many vulgarities, and while I felt dirty after writing it, I was justifiably tired of all the trolling and juvenile shenanigans that were happening between GLB and the pit. In any case, it warrants an apology that i should have directed your way a long time ago.

Well

it clearly didn’t leave any deep emotional scars, so…. apology accepted?

Sorry for whatever precipitated it?

Likewise.

We can agree to disagree about baseball- but we can always agree on the fine, upstanding young women of Arizona’s educational institutions.

Oh... like I said, I hate gAySU.

But Playboy puts them on the “hottest college women” top 10 list every year, so I can’t really argue with that. esp. since I KNOW a bunch of the women they’re talkin bout….

FWIW

UA woman are damned hott too…. there’s just quite a few less of them, since ASU has like 50,000 undergrads and UA has like 35,000; they’re also slightly less hott on average since UA’s a better school academically.

I figured as much

Everyone knows that hotness increases as you go private school-high level public school-state school-junior college.
