Smells Like Padres in Here - Thursday Edition

I fell asleep in the bottom of the 8th inning.  At first, when I woke up this morning, I felt kind of guilty about that.  But then, after reading about the 9th inning, I'm glad I got my sleep.

Canepa talks about Clay Kirby and Randy Wolf.

K-Cam has some sort of magic pitch or something.

The team supposedly is not looking for off days.  They may want to rethink that after last night.

Here is the transcript from the chat with Bud yesterday.  I wanted to participate, but my daughter wanted to jump around in her bounce house and I figured the bounce house would be more fun that listening to Bud give stock, standard answers to stock, standard questions.  I was right.

Estes had a good night in Portland.

MVP goes tonight against Jeff Francis, who is off to a horrific start this season.  Game time is 7:05pm PDT.

The Night Preston Gomez Pulled "The Kid."

I’m surprised Canepa didn’t mention that he was celebrating his 50th birthday at that game.

The noey

We’ve gotten comfortable with the “in the 7th inning, no hits” bid, it’s just not that uncommon for us now. No complaints. :)

Seriously, what is with all the off-days in April?

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.

Miguel Tejada Lied About His Age

The shortstop is actually 33, not the 31 that is listed in the Astros media guide.

"The thing is I didn’t want Houston to find out from somebody else," he said. "I wanted to find out just from my face. I’m a man and I’m responsible for everything. That’s why I prefer to come to them and say, ‘You know what? That’s the way it is and we’re moving forward.’

"I was feeling like I had something to say in the last three days. That’s why I waited for today to do it."

Ummmm…what?

Ah

The Mike Cameron Defense.

And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the score tied and Thatcher struggling.

ESPN was going to out him

PTI just showed footage of an interview they were doing with him for E:60 and the interviewer apparently gave Tejada a copy of his own birth certificate. Tejada then freaked out, started ripping off his jersey and trying to get the mic off his body.

Apparently, THAT’S when it really started to weigh on him…

Great Defense

I just read this at Baseball Prospectus:

Part of the reason for that success is the excellent defense San Diego has played this season. San Diego’s staff has allowed a .226 batting average, second lowest in the majors, and on balls put into play that average raises to a BABIP of just .256. Turning that figure around tells us that Padres’ fielders have converted 74.4 percent of balls put into play into outs, which leads the majors. The Padres ranked sixth last year in Defensive Efficiency, so that they are first so far is not too much of a surprise. However, San Diego did bring in new starters up the middle, Tadahito Iguchi at second base, and Jim Edmonds in center field. Iguchi rated as terrible with the glove during his time with Chicago, by both Dan Fox’s Simple Fielding Runs metric (SFR) and Clay Davenport’s FRAA. Oddly, upon his move to the NL last year at the trade deadline, Iguchi improved in both systems substantially, to the point where he rated as above average, and he has already been a whopping +4 FRAA at second so far this year. It was thought that Edmonds, at the age of 38 this season and in the midst of a steep decline phase, was no longer even an average glove in center due to aging and the toll of multiple injuries, but so far he too has out-performed expectations, with a FRAA Rate of +111 (11 runs better than average per 100 games). Third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and right fielder Brian Giles were the Padres’ two worst defenders last year by SFR and FRAA, but each has been much better in the early going of 2008. While the 37-year-old Giles will probably see his performance slip, there is hope that Kouzmanoff, starting his second full major league season, has made real strides at the hot corner.

And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the score tied and Thatcher struggling.

wtf?

I know, I know I’m replying to my own comment, but the other one was long enough.

For those who don’t know SFR and FRAA are two of the defensive metrics used without the aid of detailed zone data that maps where the ball is hit and what trajectory. They stand for Simple Fielding Runs and Fielding Runs Above Average.

I am quite surprised at the Edmonds and Kouz numbers. Kouz has made a few more bad plays than I would like the first week of the season, but then again I don’t recall seeing many “a good 3B should have got there” type plays. Iguchi’s numbers are not a surprise, unlike with Loretta or Barfield I haven’t seen many head scratchers as the ball rolls to the OF and I wonder “where the hell was he positioned”. Back to Edmonds. WTF? I mean, WTF? I’ve given him the benefit of the doubt a few times considering many of the balls over his head would have been over Cameron too. Cameron was not very good at catching balls running to the wall in dead center (much better at the gaps). But I have yet to see a play where Edmonds got to one that another guy wouldn’t have. I have to think the value is coming from holding runners with throws which is hard to judge what the “average” CF would do in those situations.

And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the score tied and Thatcher struggling.

"Value is coming from holding runners with throws"

Is there a statistic that parses that out from range factor? I (and many others around here) have the same suspicion that his range has so far been detrimental to our defense, but it’s also difficult to gauge the impact of subjective experience on those judgments.

(By the way, “recommend” for the BP quote. Thanks for sharing that.)

Throwing

BP did a lot of good work on handling the throwing side of defense. I believe it is included in FRAA. It’s definitely a part of SFR for outfielders. I know one of the big flaws with SFR is 1B throwing.

Keyword: expectations

Any chance Edmonds is out-performing because he was expected to perform like a cadaver?

Nope

It’s versus the average major league CF not versus the average Jim Edmonds.

Here's an example of them breaking it down

I won’t provide the whole table since its membership-based site but here’s Holliday and Soriano broken down between Fielding and Throwing for SFR.

Table 10: Left Field Total Defense, 2007
Total Throwing
Name AdjG Balls SFR OA Opps Thr Total
Matt Holliday 154.3 663 26.3 7 630 1.5 27.8
Alfonso Soriano 118.7 546 8.9 19 531 12.6 21.5

And, I'm still waiting for Meredith or Bell to come in the seventh inning of April 4's game with the bases loaded, the score tied and Thatcher struggling.
