i'm confused
why is our single A team so close and our triple A team so far? living in philadelphia I certainly see benefits to them having both their AA and AAA teams within a 2 hour drive of the pro team. not only do callups usually get to the game the day they're called up, but it allows the pro team (and it's fans) to have a better understanding of the minor league system.
when i lived in san diego i went to a lake elsinore game once. khalil was playing a rehab game, but i realized that i had no idea who any of the other players were. now, if i were a phillies fan i could go see the reading phillies (roughly an hour away from the pro team) or the lehigh valley ironpigs (roughly 2 hours away). and since those tickets are cheaper and those stadiums are closer for a lot of phillie fans, they go in droves and wind up very familiar with all of the kids.
wouldn't it make sense to bring a AA or AAA team to Oceanside? Tijuana? (they have teams in canada, why not mexico?) i really think the way it's setup now is kindof dumb. it leaves us a little bit in the dark about our minor league teams and it makes it somewhat difficult for fans of the minor league teams to follow their favorite players all the way through to the big leagues.

PDX is the close
to Seattle. Of all the games the Padres play this season, road games in Seattle, our most hated of rivals, may be the most crucial games the team plays all year, and that includes post-season games. The Padres/M's games are like Ohio St/Michigan games: it doesn't matter what the team does the rest of the year as long as they win the big rivalry game.
Seriously, though, Vegas (as Dex will say in his post) really was ideal to some extent. Having a AAA close to SD would be best for the team and fans alike. Although the Padres have a hard enough time drawing fans, compared to some East Coast teams, and having a cheaper, but still fairly high-quality, alternative so close to San Diego may erode ticket sales.
Dex, you're the guru on the business end of sports, is there a viable solution?

A guess
I'd imagine it has to do with where the A, AA, and AAA leagues are. It's a little difficult to manage intra-league travel to an out-of-the-way ballpark when you do all your travel by bus. Just a guess.

Minor Leagues teams need attendence
Despite our large California cities, we don't have the urban sprawl of the east coast. So while cities like Lake Elsinore or Rancho Cucamunga are close they are also not really capable of supporting the attendance that you would expect of a AAA. Most AAA teams are located in cities that are close to be major league cities and have large populations (Portland, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Columbus, Vancouver, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Tucson, etc.). There just aren't that many of those in Southern California that are far enough away from the major league city. For example, you use 2 hours for Phillies AAA. Two hours north of San Diego is LA. Two hours west and you're in the ocean. Two hours south and you're in Mexico. Two hours east and you're in the desert. So basically you are left with cities like Fresno (SF), Las Vegas (LAD), Portland (SD), Colorado Springs (Col), Tucson (Ari), Salt Lake City (LAA), Sacramento (Oak), Oklahoma City (Tex), and Tacoma (Sea).

Hoffman is a GREAT rolemodel
How can anyone not respect this kind of attitude:
Hoffman typically makes himself scarce after his saves, but stands before his locker until the last straggler is left when he blows one. It is an example that has not been lost on his younger teammates, an example Hoffman has been setting virtually nonstop since late September.
If I want a kid in any sport paying attention to a pro player, I want them paying attention to this guy.

I don't know about that...
Unless he means a save instead of a straggler.

O/T
Has anyone been on Youtube yet today? Apparently all the videos on their front page lead to drama's favorite music video, "never gonna give you up" by rick astley.

Rick Astley
See, most people think that "Never Gonna Give You Up" was Astley's best work. The truth is, "Together Forever" was the real pinnacle of a short, but brilliant career. While "Together Forever" only reached #2 on the U.S. AC charts and in Canada...it did hit the number one slot on all the other charts that really matter in the music business (UK, US Hot & Dance).
Also, his earlier work with the group FBI should not go over-looked. There are some real hidden gems there you should really check out.
In closing, his loss at the 1989 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist to Tracy Chapman was what can only be described as grand theft. It's a horrible memory that time will never erase from my mind.

Do you like Phil Collins?
"I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your [expletive]. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite."
