Open Thread, 3/4: Padres vs Giants

I fully expect us to beat the Giants 28-3 or so. I'll be a little disappointed if we can't pull double digits. Drama was too lazy to write a diary today found some interesting online tidbits, so he sent me the first Barry Bonds speculation article that doesn't mention San Diego, which is a relief, since it shows that people are listening. He also sent this post about MLBAM and what greedy rat bastards they are.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna fire up MLB.tv, which I pay $14.95 a month for, to watch the Padres game buffer every 3 minutes.

GO PADRES!

MLB.tv
Is it really always like that?   I'd been thinking about canceling my directv subscription, because they have angered me greatly, but only if mlb.tv had vastly improved.    What's your connection speed?  The best I can do is 10 mbps.

Stinks being an out of market Pads fan!

by Deb on Mar 4, 2008 12:12 PM PST reply actions

10mbps?
I sort of have to doubt that's your connection speed to the internets. I'm considering mlb.tv myself, but the pricing burns by balls every time I click an mlb.tv link.

I don't know much of anything..
about internet and connection speed.

I just know that time warner, my only internet option, has a 7 mbps and a 10 mbps option.   I currently have the 7.   I don't even know what mbps means.

Re: price..   it's much cheaper than the Extra Innings package, and I'm used to paying for that already.

Otherwise I'd just be watching Ranger games!

Megabits vs kilobits
/puts on nerd spectacles

1 Megabit (per second, Mbps) is roughly 1,000 kilobits (per second, kbps).

7 Mbps is more than enough to handle a 700k feed. The lag you would experience would be on the server end of that connection. And then maybe if your computer doesnt have a lot of memory (RAM), it will tend to lag out after a long time.

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.

Thanks
for the explanation. That makes sense now.

I had verizon dsl when I experienced really bad mlb.tv quality, and I also had my old computer.  My husband bought me a fancy-schmancy gamers computer for my birthday so I bet I have lots of RAM now.  I suspect he plans to play video games on the sly...

I still might end up just keeping the Extra Innings package though. I don't know if I can handle a whole season watching baseball from a computer chair.

by Deb on Mar 5, 2008 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

Chair
That's why you have to get a laptop. I just walk around the house with the game on.

actually, it's pretty good
I'm on the 400k plan. I know that the upgraded version would stall out on me. Sometimes the audio wouldn't match up just right. I'll probably upgrade to the 700k plan eventually and live with it.

by Dex on Mar 4, 2008 12:16 PM PST up reply actions

If I were to pay for a service like that
I would go all out, I suppose. I could justify $14.95 a month for a 700k feed. The 400k should be free. Probably illogical.
It's a time for men, men who are friends.

by elan on Mar 4, 2008 12:18 PM PST up reply actions

I can see charging for video
I can't believe they charge a full $14.95 for Radio considering that's the same price for the 400k feed. If radio isn't gonna be free, at least it should be cheaper than television.

by Dex on Mar 4, 2008 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

My bad
I guess radio's $14.95 for the season. I'll take it!

by Dex on Mar 4, 2008 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

Just signed up
for Gameday audio yesterday.  I love it so far, but I find that often times the stats are not up to date.  For instance, the score yesterday was 10-2 or something like that, but the window kept showing 5-2 with the wrong inning. Just seems like it updates slowly.  Maybe it is a mac thing.  Other than that I like it.

by sacpadre on Mar 4, 2008 12:30 PM PST up reply actions

Gameday is so frustrating
that it's admittedly hard to not pull out the credit card for a premium service. The top of the first inning just ended according to Gameday, and it only sends information in bursts, so I get everything at once. I wish I could watch the games on television, but my satellite provider doesn't offer Channel 4SD as part of it's "local" package. Fuck it, Dish Network is an ASS.

Rick Sutcliffe and Mark Grant were the analysts. I have a sneaky suspicion they aren't anymore.

And sometimes the main guy when Matt Vasgersian takes off for other duties, like the Olympics, or the Men's World Cup Mogul Downhill competition at 3:30 pm on a Saturday on NBC. Ya know, the biggies.

The last time I tried mlb.tv...
two seasons ago, it would freeze all the time, usually right after the pitcher released the ball, then I'd hear the announcers call a home run I couldn't see.

by Deb on Mar 4, 2008 12:13 PM PST reply actions

Spring training's an anomaly
A lot of people are doing previews of it, and they're working out kinks as they usually do this time of year. By the actual season, everything should be okay.

And, for what it's worth, the streaming's been great for me the last two years, getting sluggish when trying to run the mosaic version, but just fine when doing a single game.

RBI Sac fly: 3 - 0 Pads
I don't know if anyone was listening to the game on Sunday, but apparently in his second AB, Khalil absolutely destroyed a ball to LF that got caught up in the wind for a double off the wall.

My only thought was, "Well, at least he's getting ready for the regular season in a park that accurately represents PETCO."

Barrett was 8 with Chicago
He probably wanted his old number and Scott gave it to him, or it's just a vet/common courtesy thing.

I don't think so
Scott was wearing #14 last season. Termell Sledge wore #8 last season, how could you forget?!

Know your rights
The MLBAM thing only applies to media outlets with media passes.

You buy your ticket, and chronicle your experiences at the game, including as many pictures or videos (within reason) that you want, and you have yourself a derivative work created under Fair Use.

I say 'within reason' cuz you can't just record the whole game on video and run your own commentary. :)

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.
