And then...there were 25. The roster is set.
According to our good friend Corey Brock the Padres have set their 25-man roster...ummm, kinda.
It's basically set except for the fact that Jim Edmonds continues to get great weed from some dude that sells it out of a VW Thing in OB...thus Jimmy is still dreaming of playing on Opening Day against the Astros.
So, with Edmonds starting the season on the DL (he'd be eligible to play starting April 5th)...WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I am honored to bring you your Opening Day roster for the 2008 San Diego Padres.
Catchers:
Bard, Barrett
Outfielders:
Giles, Hairy, Gerut, P-Keg (more on this later) and Justin Huber
Infielders:
Aid, Tadahito (FYI - He doesn't like "Tad"), Greeney, Kouz, T. Clark and Callix
Starting Pitchers;
Jake, CY, Mad Dog, The Wolf and Germano
The Best Bullpen in all of baseball:
Hoffy, Heat, Cla, Rusch, Ledezma, Thatch, Enrique
Now...to the not so exciting news. This also comes from Corey's article:
If Edmonds goes on the disabled list, the likely starters in the outfield will be Giles in right field, Hairston in center field and McAnulty in left field.
P-KEG IS GONNA START????? WHAT????

Crazy, huh?
Yeah, Bud Black basically hinted at this on Too Much Show yesterday. I can't believe it either. I'd pretty much take anybody on the 25 man but Barrett to start over PKeg.

I have argued against PKeg getting PT in the past...
but I am gonna change my stance. I have decided to trust Buddy and Towers on this one, because they have to know something that we don't.
Balls to the Wall! Experience It!
Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

PKeg take two
I slept on the thought of PKeg starting opening day and came up with some reasoning. Let's suppose that Padres don't have confidence that Gerut can be out there everyday (a reasonable assumption, his knees are risky). So with Edmonds out and Hairston in center, left field becomes more of a platoon. Well, tough righty Roy Oswalt is on the mound Monday, so I guess it makes sense to put the natural lefty in the lineup. When LHP Wandy Rodriguez pitches (Tuesday? Wednesday?) I'm pretty sure Gerut will be in LF (unless Huber is, but I think Huber is just a pinch hitter and emergency catcher at this point).

what happened to clay hensley?
i think i might've missed something. did he just fall off the face of the earth? i haven't heard anything about him.
"i kinda feel like nevin and klesko were some fling we (the padres) had in the past and now realize were a bad idea and are embarrassed about."

He got placed on the 15-day DL a few days ago..
And according to Drama's newest FanPost, he will not be on the 25-man roster for Opening Day.

From Rotoworld on Clay....
Padres placed RHP Clay Hensley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, following shoulder surgery.
Hensley just started throwing off the mound last week, so he's at least a month away from joining the Padres. Once healthy, he could be quite an asset in middle relief or at the back of the rotation.

Hensley
I'm really hoping that he comes back in a month or two he reprises is 2005 ace setup man role. Meredith kind of stole that job from him, but right now the 7th inning is free with Brocail's departure (and the 6th inning when Maddux and Germano pitch). Unless we need him in the rotation, but that's a lot of stuff that has to go wrong (Germano, Prior, Estes, Rusch) before we go to him and I'm not gonna root for that.
I don't have to always be right. I just have to always think I'm right.

P-Keg
Remember how we sort of decided that KT had something against Hensley or Hensley had done something to him and that's why he just kept dropping the hammer on him last yr?
Can we now explore the other side of that equation and wonder exactly what it is that P-Keg has on KT?
(And, yeah, I know - he's probably showcasing him to move him once Headley is ready - but really - seeing him in the Opening Day lineup is just gross.)

Gross is a perfect word.
Maybe I'm just a dumb fan. In my little world you put the 25 guys on your roster that give your team the best chance to win baseball games and ultimately a World Series. My only focus is on winning...not what a players arbitration status is going to cost the team in 2011...not on showcasing a AAAA player in hopes of squeezing a little more talent out of another GM in a trade...not on who has options and who doesn't. I guess that's what separates fans from management.
So, I guess we're just all gonna have to watch P-Keg stumble around left field (think Klesko in '04 & '05), in the hopes that he hits well enough to get some sucker to give us a Double A arm instead of a Single A arm. That sounds worth it.

Sandy A. on XX
had some interesting comments on depth for the full season, rather than focusing on the roster that happens to be there for openning day/week. On Huber he mentioned in particular the need for balance *in the first week*.
Of course, what would you expect him say? Still, i found it soothing, like sliding into a warm bath.
