Padres line-up...
Krasovic has a pretty good article about the bench in this mornings U-T.

Edgar is getting some work at catcher to see if he can handle the role of emergency catcher. I have a feeling when the Padres get back from China, Robert Fick is going to get the boot.

Also, Hairy might not make the trip to China after he got drilled in the arm last night. Personally, I'm happy to hear he might stay back...he could use the playing time in center.

Fick
Probably right, unless they could use him on the bench at Portland.  Alderson may be bringing him to China as royal food taster.

I hope
mi hermano gets the job; I refuse to change my name to TheSecondFick. Am I the only one who really, really doesn't like Fick? I wish KT'd hurry up and get him the rubert out of the organization right about nowish.

Same, just shuffled
RF Briles
2B The Tad'
3B Kouz
1B Agony
SS Khali-Lama
CF Shrek
C Shakespeare
LF Chase Needs A Nickname
P JaKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKe

Although we all know Khalil is at his worst in the fifth spot in the order, I think that's where Bud's gonna put him.

Same, but Reshuffled
CF: Harriston (Speed at the top of the Lineup
2B: Tad (Speed and he is perfect here, he is like Lorretta, but with more speed defense and a little less pop)
1B Agon (always put your best hitter 3rd)
3b Kouz (all star numbers)
RF Briles (He will probably hit 4th, but I like the L, R, L batting order)
C Barret (He may be a dick, but he is one of the best offensive C in the NL)
SS KG (One day he is Honus Wagner at the plate, next day he is Ramon Vasquez)
LF Chase (I actually see him as a 2 or 5 hitter if he hits like he always has)
P

This is a really solid lineup-it may not be murders row but it is solid 1-8, KG and Edmonds are really the only big strikeout guys we have, but both have a lot of pop.

Bench:
E-Gon
T-Clark
Bard
Gerut? Calix?

Spots on the bench.....
There's really only three available. I'm guessing E-Gon, Callix and Gerut.

Gerut is a perfect 4th OF cuz he can play all three OF positions. He has wheels and dude can hit. Not including split squad games...he's had playing time in LF, CF and RF.

E-Gon and Callix can basically play every damn position on the field. I think these two make the team just based on their versatility.

Not counting split squad games...E-Gon has had time at 1st, 2nd, SS and 3rd. And now we hear he can serve as the emergency catcher as well as play in the OF if he has to. He also has 8 hits and 6 RBI in just 15 at-bats.

Callix has played at 2nd, SS, 3rd and centerfield. He has good speed as well.

Along with Tony Clark and Michael Barrett...that's a damn good bench.

SammyG, I'm surprised you have Barrett starting. I don't see that happening. I see him getting a lot more playing time than he did in '07 though. Josh hit .406 with runners in scoring position in '07...in my opinion he's earned his starting job.

extra OF
will depend on the timing of Edmonds first DL trip.  P Mac or Gerut.

On a recent XX interview, Giles kept referring to McAnulty as "McNulty" - ignorance or reference to HBO's The Wire?  I think the latter.

Baltimore can have him.
My vote is for Gerut.

P-Keg
Did you see him trying to catch that ball in left last night? Brutal. If that had been a double-double I bet he would have snatched it bare-handed.

by Drama on Mar 11, 2008 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Horrible line
on that ball. Maybe he couldn't have caught it, but no way should it have gone for a triple.

by Phantom on Mar 11, 2008 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

P-Keg
Look...I'll admit he can hit. There's not much questioning of that. But the guy can't play the OF. It has to be Gerut.

Gerut has speed...P-Keg does not. Gerut can play all three OF positions...P-Keg can barely play the corners. It's gotta be Gerut.

by Drama on Mar 11, 2008 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Gerut too
but worry that the 'out of options' thing will sway them towards McNulty.  Probably not though since we need depth in CF.

by Billy Almon on Mar 11, 2008 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Options.
I agree. That part scares me as well. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will need some OF depth and offer us a young arm.

Unrelated to the lineup...
but it's nice to see the Padres finally get a little respect.

Tomorrow they rank the bullpens. The respect will be nice then, too.

I was stunned
they ranked us #1. I thought everyobdy had heralded AZ as the second coming of Christ when it came to pitching.

Speed At the Top of the lineup is wasted
RF Giles
2B Iguchi
3B Kouz
1B Gonz
C  Bard
SS Greene
LF Gerut
CF Hairston
P

Bench:
Crabbe
Barrett
Clark
Edmonds (probably won't be out long enough for DL)
McAnulty

Maybe not enough INF though. I'm torn between EGon and Stansberry if Edmonds goes to the DL. But I'd probably take the prospect (Stans, 26) over the veteran (EGon, 30). Headley stays in AAA otherwise we'd have to let PKeg or Gerut go and we need all the depth we can get. Headley gets the call in late May.

by Wonko on Mar 11, 2008 5:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

So What?
Gerut's 30, big whoop. I'm just saying if you let some other team have Gerut and somebody gets hurt  or Headley struggles who do you bring up? If you keep Gerut and something goes wrong, then you can always go to Headley. Plus Gerut can play all three OF positions and Headley is just learning LF. Gerut has hit more HRs (34) than his age some Headster can't claim. One more thing. Look how they've been using Headley. He almost never starts so he never faces the best pitching. They are protecting him so he doesn't lose confidence. It doesn't really look like they are trying to let him win the job.

Maybe Stans isn't a prospect, but he's still in his peak. EGon is getting to be the wrong side of 30 and never made it in the majors. Plus I think Stans is the better defender.

by Wonko on Mar 12, 2008 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what?
Edgar's 30, big whoop

"or Headley struggles who do you bring up?"
Kouz struggled and they didin't bring anyone up. Also Edmonds is gonna gets healthy and you can slide Hariston over to left.

"Gerut has hit more HRs (34) than his age some Headster can't claim."
Well Headley is a rookie...

"It doesn't really look like they are trying to let him win the job."
Well he is winning it anyway

by CurbEnthusiasm on Mar 12, 2008 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay Okay
Edgar's 30 without experience. Totally different.

Kouz has played 3B before and was a rookie who had played AAA. Headley is learning a new position and a new league and has never played above AA. Also, Headley plays one of the easiest to replace positions. Totally different.

Headley is rookie, with minor league options. Exactly my point. Thank you.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I do not believe he is winning it as evidenced by the manager's usage.

Last points
Edgar has put up better numbers than Stansberry ever has.

Headley has started half of the games and is second on the team in at bats

Touche
I'll concede the Headley points. I guess I was biased because while I was in AZ for four days he didn't start. I still think the lack of position versatility, the minor league options, the no-AAA, and the new position might keep him from making the opening day roster. I also don't see him staying in AAA past the All Star game, so we are really quibbling over a very slight difference.

With EGon, the key to your statement is the word HAS. EGon is past his peak so he has those numbers from his peak to show for himself. And if his peak wasn't good enough for the majors, why would his decline phase be? I mean Gonzalez didn't even stick in AAA until he was 29. Stansberry's not done with his peak. He's been moving up the minors steadily as opposed to getting demoted a bunch like Gonzalez. There is something that scouts see in EGon beyond just his .300 BAs he's putting up for him to get sent from AAA to A+ in 07 and to not get promoted to St. Louis last year with their 2B situation. I'm pretty convinced Stansberry is the better ballplayer.

I have an opinion about everything
Swap Rusch and Germano. Kick Guevera and Zarate to the curb. Add Cameron and Thatcher. I'd like to see Hensley in there, but I guess he'll start on the DL.

Thatch and Kcam
Can go to AAA. Leave the Rule V guys on the roster.
