Who hearts openning day lineup projections?
CF Hairston
2B Iguchi
RF Giles
1B Gonzalez
3B Kouz
SS Greene
C Bard
LF Headley
P Peavy
I know, Giles is more likely to lead off.

Padres line-up...
Edgar is getting some work at catcher to see if he can handle the role of emergency catcher. I have a feeling when the Padres get back from China, Robert Fick is going to get the boot.
Also, Hairy might not make the trip to China after he got drilled in the arm last night. Personally, I'm happy to hear he might stay back...he could use the playing time in center.

LF Chase Needs A Nickname

Although we all know Khalil is at his worst in the fifth spot in the order, I think that's where Bud's gonna put him.

Same, but Reshuffled
2B: Tad (Speed and he is perfect here, he is like Lorretta, but with more speed defense and a little less pop)
1B Agon (always put your best hitter 3rd)
3b Kouz (all star numbers)
RF Briles (He will probably hit 4th, but I like the L, R, L batting order)
C Barret (He may be a dick, but he is one of the best offensive C in the NL)
SS KG (One day he is Honus Wagner at the plate, next day he is Ramon Vasquez)
LF Chase (I actually see him as a 2 or 5 hitter if he hits like he always has)
P
This is a really solid lineup-it may not be murders row but it is solid 1-8, KG and Edmonds are really the only big strikeout guys we have, but both have a lot of pop.
Bench:
E-Gon
T-Clark
Bard
Gerut? Calix?

Spots on the bench.....
Gerut is a perfect 4th OF cuz he can play all three OF positions. He has wheels and dude can hit. Not including split squad games...he's had playing time in LF, CF and RF.
E-Gon and Callix can basically play every damn position on the field. I think these two make the team just based on their versatility.
Not counting split squad games...E-Gon has had time at 1st, 2nd, SS and 3rd. And now we hear he can serve as the emergency catcher as well as play in the OF if he has to. He also has 8 hits and 6 RBI in just 15 at-bats.
Callix has played at 2nd, SS, 3rd and centerfield. He has good speed as well.
Along with Tony Clark and Michael Barrett...that's a damn good bench.
SammyG, I'm surprised you have Barrett starting. I don't see that happening. I see him getting a lot more playing time than he did in '07 though. Josh hit .406 with runners in scoring position in '07...in my opinion he's earned his starting job.

extra OF
On a recent XX interview, Giles kept referring to McAnulty as "McNulty" - ignorance or reference to HBO's The Wire? I think the latter.

P-Keg
Gerut has speed...P-Keg does not. Gerut can play all three OF positions...P-Keg can barely play the corners. It's gotta be Gerut.

Unrelated to the lineup...
Tomorrow they rank the bullpens. The respect will be nice then, too.

McAnulty
Maybe not enough INF though. I'm torn between EGon and Stansberry if Edmonds goes to the DL. But I'd probably take the prospect (Stans, 26) over the veteran (EGon, 30). Headley stays in AAA otherwise we'd have to let PKeg or Gerut go and we need all the depth we can get. Headley gets the call in late May.

Wouldn't call 26 a prospect
Headley 23
Gerut 30
by CurbEnthusiasm on Mar 11, 2008 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So What?
Maybe Stans isn't a prospect, but he's still in his peak. EGon is getting to be the wrong side of 30 and never made it in the majors. Plus I think Stans is the better defender.

So what?
"or Headley struggles who do you bring up?"
Kouz struggled and they didin't bring anyone up. Also Edmonds is gonna gets healthy and you can slide Hariston over to left.
"Gerut has hit more HRs (34) than his age some Headster can't claim."
Well Headley is a rookie...
"It doesn't really look like they are trying to let him win the job."
Well he is winning it anyway
by CurbEnthusiasm on Mar 12, 2008 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay Okay
Kouz has played 3B before and was a rookie who had played AAA. Headley is learning a new position and a new league and has never played above AA. Also, Headley plays one of the easiest to replace positions. Totally different.
Headley is rookie, with minor league options. Exactly my point. Thank you.
We'll have to agree to disagree. I do not believe he is winning it as evidenced by the manager's usage.

Last points
Headley has started half of the games and is second on the team in at bats

Touche
With EGon, the key to your statement is the word HAS. EGon is past his peak so he has those numbers from his peak to show for himself. And if his peak wasn't good enough for the majors, why would his decline phase be? I mean Gonzalez didn't even stick in AAA until he was 29. Stansberry's not done with his peak. He's been moving up the minors steadily as opposed to getting demoted a bunch like Gonzalez. There is something that scouts see in EGon beyond just his .300 BAs he's putting up for him to get sent from AAA to A+ in 07 and to not get promoted to St. Louis last year with their 2B situation. I'm pretty convinced Stansberry is the better ballplayer.
