i heard this on the radio tonight

and it seriously bummed me out. It’s not even that I love those guys or anything, it’s just that they were such a fixture at Mighty XX. I liked both of their personalities quite a bit.

Same here

I think it was a budget issue (haha, that’s a new idea around these parts isn’t it?) for two guys to be let go at once.

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Darrin Smith by himself is almost too annoying to listen to

And I usually find sports radio pretty annoying (listening is part of my plan to get more angry at the radio than I am at the other cars on the road, since I there is no way I can do something I regret to the radio).

I hope they do something about it.

"Whoa... You can't say stuff like that!"
"I get it Chief. I'll play ball. You just gotta blow the whistle and call the fouls. Alright?"

Yeah I was not a Philly Billy fan but...

Darrin Smith really needs another person to have a conversation with on air he can’t hang by himself.

by Grey Suit on Dec 9, 2008 10:29 PM PST up reply actions

Surprising

I used to listen to 1090 frequently and I can see firing Joe Tutino. He is not a personality and does not bring in ratings. Philly Billy is the biggest personality on the station but probably also the highest salary. Unless he did something wrong on air or behind closed doors, it has to be budget related.

by NewportHalo on Dec 9, 2008 11:29 PM PST reply actions

Respectfully disagree.

Joe is a personality and while his slot with Kentera may not bring in big ratings…his presence and contributions to the station, on-air and off, are immeasurable. He is a huge loss to 1090.

While Billy is one of the biggest personalities on the station…he is not the highest paid. (I would put him right in the top 3, as far as salary is concerned.) Unfortunately for Billy, salary relief was badly need by 1090 and he was let go.

Make no mistake, these decisions were both made because of what’s been happening with the economy. Radio has taken a massive hit in this recession and 1090 has been hit especially hard. Remember, 1090 spent a ton of $ for the broadcast rights to a baseball team that hardly anyone could stand to watch…much less listen to.

It’s a sad story to read for anyone that has enjoyed sports-talk radio in San Diego over the last decade.

Such a painful trip...to find out this is it.

by Drama on Dec 10, 2008 6:34 AM PST up reply actions

Do you work for 1090 or something?

I personally liked Philly Billy and Bulldog. I can’t stand listening to the Coach by himself since all he does is talk about how great he is and name drops constantly…it was fun when Bulldog would rattle his cage everyday…so now I’m going to turn it off from 9 AM-2 or 3 PM (since I can’t stand Rome either). I was a harsh critic of Darren and Billy and had some e-mail battles with Darren but I still listened to them everyday because they were pretty entertaining and were the most baseball heavy show on that station. I’m going to give Darren a shot by himself but it still won’t be the same.

For you to make that comment about the Padres is wrong though….getting the rights to the Padres games put 1090 on the map here in SD so don’t go throwing a pity party saying that “they spent a ton of $ for the broadcast rights to a baseball team that hardly anyone could stand to watch…much less listen to.” Geez some people blame the Padres for everything.

by SDPads_1 on Dec 10, 2008 7:03 AM PST up reply actions

No...you're wrong.

I agree that acquiring the rights to the Padres games helped build 1090’s identity in the market. But it’s not “a pity party”…I am stating a fact. The Padres had an awful year and they were out of it early. As ratings tanked…sponsors dropped out or scaled back their commitments…potential sponsors steered clear and ad rates plummeted. The point I was making was that the economy has been hard on radio, but that it was especially hard on 1090 because they lost their ass on the Padres this season. I didn’t “blame the Padres” for the cutbacks at 1090. The economy, the broadcast deal with the Padres and the terrible season the Chargers are currently having were all factors.

Such a painful trip...to find out this is it.

I know you are but what am I??

You never answered my question though do you work for 1090? If not then how do you know about the ratings, sponsors being cutback and who is the highest paid talent?

by SDPads_1 on Dec 10, 2008 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

I don't work for 1090.

I worked for XTRA 690 before it was blown up and 1090 as born.

You don’t have to work there to know about ratings and sponsors cutting back. The Padres poor ratings on TV and Radio were well documented in the media on many occasions.

As far as knowing who makes the most money…the same is true at any radio station….look at their time slot, and to some extent, their tenure. It’s pretty easy to figure it out from there.

Such a painful trip...to find out this is it.

Obviously

But you were making it sound like you had inside knowledge so I was just wondering.

This an a-hole comment.

If that comment gets me banned…so be it…it would be well worth it.

To say “Good riddance” about two good people that have lost the jobs that they love (two weeks before Christmas, no less) due to circumstances beyond their control is an a-hole comment.

Such a painful trip...to find out this is it.

Drama, Scott and BR make more than Werndl? I had assumed he was the “big-bucks” guy there, although on second thought I guess it wouldn’t surprise me that the morning guys made equal or more.

Richard,

C’mon, man. Just cuz it’s the Interweb doesn’t mean you have to be a jackass.

by SR on Dec 10, 2008 8:17 AM PST reply actions

I can't confirm that.

But I would guess they do…remember morning drive is where many radio stations pull in the most revenue.

Such a painful trip...to find out this is it.

A voice made for print media

I never understood how a radio station can have three of the most grating voices on for several hours a day and expect people to listen. Werndl, Coach and Phil Nevin all have voices made for print. Nothing against Werndl, I feel bad when anyone loses a job, but I could never take his voice for more than a few minutes at a time.

I hope they get someone in there with Darren though, he already had a tendency to run on and on, now it’s almost unlistenable.

I loved Phil

The pregame show is so boring without him because it basically consisted of a baseball outsider and a guy who hadn’t played in 25 years. Phil brought some current perspective to the show. Plus, he’s gone now anyway.

"I get it Chief. I'll play ball. You just gotta blow the whistle and call the fouls. Alright?"

I like Phil, too

Better on the radio than as a player. His (sort of) uncensored, politically incorrect style brought a good balance.

Darren just sounds sad and alone, now.

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Philly Billy was back today...

No word as to why but I’m glad he was back…..I e-mailed Darren to see if it was for good or just a 1 time thing and he said he couldn’t comment right now.
