Josh Vitters in Peavy Trade?

Can somebody explain this one to me?  The Peavy trade talk to the Cubs and potentially the Orioles as a menais trois member seems to center around Josh Vitters who was the 3rd pick in the draft two years as a third baseman and some young pitching talent.  I am little bit of baseball draft geek, and I know that Vitters is suppose to have ungodly power potential with a short compact stroke ala Ryan Braun but haven't the Pads already had a logjam at 3rd base with Kouz and Headley.  Is the thought to unload Kouz (who has diminished value since surgery) and keep Headley in left?  Clearly, first base is taken up for the foreseeable future, right?

I don't get the Vitters thing either.

As you said we already have a logjam at 3rd base.

Many believe that at some point Kooz will be traded so that Headley can play his natural position.

The reason we will probably keep them both for now is that we are broke and they are both cheap and young, so we might as well keep them around until the right deal or more money comes around.
(Oh yeah, and Kooz s just coming off of shoulder surgery)

Oh yeah, and about 1st base, its soo blocked that we may have to trade this guy.

So, I’m really not sure where vitters would fit in long term. I guess its about getting the best players possible, even if they don’t fit perfectly in your system.

Thoughts?

He's 19.

Headley could already be eligible for free agency by the time Vitters gets up.

The only reason Vitters is included is because

He’s basically THE ONLY top notch prospect that the Cubs have. Samazarwhatever is protected by a no-trade clause and is still a mixed bag. Beyond that who in the world do the Cubs have? Geovonny Soto was a damn good prospect and is now a ROY, ergo untouchable. Beyond that there’s Donald Veal (Rule V), Jose Ceda (gone), Sean Gallagher, Kevin Hart (nothing special), Sean Marshall (#5 guy at best) and that’s about it. The Cubs have to have one of the most barren farm systems around as far as good talent is concerned. Vitters is their ‘crown jewel’, and at the very least he could be flipped for some other prospects.

The truth is that the Cubs are one of the worst possible teams to make this deal with because of their lack of talent, yet we are still trying to make it work for some ungodly reason. Ergo the requirement then is to take their crown jewel

If Vitters is part of the deal then im sure the Padres would keep him for a year or two

See where they are at with Kouz or Headley (whoever they keep) and then move the odd man out…I hate to say it but they will prob do the same thing with Banks and Adrain at the end of next year.

that's how i understood it

vitters would be sent to a possible third team with pitching going back to san diego in return. the padres seek pitching and middle infield help, possibly center field – although the organization hasn’t admitted the latter. so taking all the cubs middle infield scrubs, and whatever vitters can bring in terms of starting pitching would be what the padres get in return for peavy.

Now I'm reading

We’d get Vitters, Marshall, Hart, Cedeno, and garrett olsen from the O’s

2009 San Diego Padres. Not as bad as Aztec Football!

Well that's an OK haul

Their top prospect at 3B
A back end starter
A mid rotation starter
A reliever
A shortstop

I still don’t like what they have to offer but no one else seems interested in jumping in and the team seems obsessed with getting rid of the guy

i think they should spend another month working on this thing

and find a fourth team. a team that can send the padres another starting pitcher with upside on the mound similar to what vitters has at the plate. it would look like this:

Peavy to the Cubs
Vitters to 4th team for ML-Ready pitching
ML Pitching to the Padres from a 4th team
Felix Pie to the O’s
Olsen to the Padres from the O’s
Cedeno, Hart, Marshall to the Padres

That’s what it would take for me to like the peavy/cubs trade.

Forget Olson

He’s worthless.

I don't want either.

I want somebody that people actually think might be good someday.

its sounding more like a deal

when the cubs send derosa packing in return for phillies pitching

by zotzotpadre on Dec 9, 2008 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

Except

That the Cubs say the deal is off, plus they were trying to push Marquis instead of Marshall to us.

kevin towers is trying hard to keep this deal going

i dont want marquis. i hope kt agrees. the cubs keep saying it is off, the pads keep saying it is on. the cubs talked to the twinkies yesterday with respect to derosa – i’d like any pitcher from the twins system, given their recent success with raising pitchers on the farm.

Well

At least he’d replace Peavy’s bat in the lineup.

Vitters has nothing to do with Kouz and Headley

Even prospect experts who are high on Vitters say he won’t be ready until 2011, but most think 2012. There are also some who don’t see him being a major league 3B and will require a switch to 1B, but my guess is that if the team needs a 3B, then he will be a 3B, Bobby Bonilla style.

Its not a matter of wanting him

he’s the only thing you have worthwhile when all your other minor leaguers suck infinitely worse then ours!!!!!
