Merry Christmas the Padres sign three pitchers
I just wanted to log in real quick and wish you all a Merry Christmas. I hope Scanlan's foot gets better, I saw him limping around tonight. The Padres just peeked in their stockings and found a bullpen, which is nice.
The Padres signed three pitchers:
The Padres signed right-handed pitchers Kevin Correia, Chris Britton and Oneli Perez to Minor League deals along with catcher Eliezer Alonzo. San Diego also agreed to a one-year deal with infielder Luis Rodriguez.
Former Giants pitcher Correia signs deal with his hometown team
“Some other clubs offered more money,” said his agent, Barry Axelrod. “For the teams that are more cost conscious, they thought he might be a bargain. He wants to be a starter. It looks like a wide-open competition would be available (with the Padres).”
Tom Krasovic sketches out what he thinks the starting rotation will look like next year. Here are the candidates:
- Jake Peavy
- Chris Young
- Cha Seung Baek
- Josh Geer
- Wade LeBlanc
- Chad Reinike
Remember this is the season where we can hope this sort of thing is true:
Thus the last will be first, and the first, last
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I think I like the idea of Geer being in the rotation
I was excited about his future, but I thought there were injury concerns about him for 2009. I hope he’s not pushing it just because this is his first shot at a job in a rotation spot in the majors.

Yeah
He has fraying of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. And last I heard in October or November the team was saying they were going to give him a few weeks and then see how it is from there….haven’t heard anything since.

I just read that UT article
and apparently they are encouraged by his throwing sessions and he shouldn’t need surgery. I guess we’ll have to wait and see on him then. At least we’ve finally heard something though.

Scan's ankle surgery
Thanks for the well wishes with my hobbled ankle. Needed to get it cleaned up in case Pads need a right hander out of the pen this year…or a 6’8" towel boy.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and a festive Kwanzaa to all the Gaslamp Ballers!

How come
EVERYTHINGGGGGGGG Scan posts on here gets Rec’d? He could come on here and say “I kick puppies” and it would get 40 Recs. I sense some favoritism out there in GLB land.

Are we really going to let Baek pitch in the rotation?
I know he had his moments last year but I’d much rather see him go one or two innings out of the bullpen than trying to go five or six.
Then again, we have very few other options at this point…

Since its mostly a rebuilding year
Baek is gonna be out there to eat some innings so you don’t push the kids just to make it 9 innings.

As negative as everyone is right now
and as much as they want to complain, I don’t see how this starting rotation is much different than it has been the last few years. Yes, Maddux and Wells were fun to watch, and although they provided some mentoring value for the young guys, when it came to performance, they were league average at best. Wolf was below average, CHP was average at best, Hensley had one good year, Germano was a bright spot for awhile, Woody Williams was average…where are these spectacular rotations that we have fallen so far from? We have two great pitchers at the top of the rotation, just like we have for awhile now. The rest of the rotation will be filled by average guys. Pretty much the same as most major league teams, except we have two guys that could be a number one starter. The biggest problem I see is that with a lot of young guys who haven’t pitched a lot of full MLB seasons, it might be taxing on our bullpen. Of course, Towers has been addressing that issue.

This may sound weird, but...
Average is hard to come by. The Padres don’t have a good track record in developing average pitchers. That’s why they bring in the Wells’, Madduxes, Wolfs and Williams’. There’s nothing that guarantees that any of the Padres pitching prospects will even be as good as average, especially in their first year. And if they are not, then you are definitely left with a worse rotation than last year. At least with those old average guys, you knew what you were getting. It’s a gamble on talented youth that could be worse than the rotations the Padres had before, so to say its not different doesn’t sound right to me.

Agreed...mostly
You knew pretty much what you were getting with a lot of those guys. You also knew that more than likely you weren’t going to get (over the season) much better than average. While these new guys are definitely unproven compared to Wells and Maddux, there is probably a greater upside. They probably won’t be as consistently as the super-vets, but that isn’t always a bad thing. While consistency on the offense is a good thing, it is not as desireable on the pitching end. And I hate to say it, but there was nothing guaranteeing that Maddux, Wolf, Wells or any of those guys would be even as good as average.
Anyway, my point was not that there is NO difference, but that the difference isn’t as vast as some people want to believe. Our strengths (Jake and CY and the bullpen) are still there, and the quality of our 3-5 starters isn’t significantly reduced. Well, that remains to be seen, but on paper it’s pretty close.
