Roy Oswalt: Team Player

Roy Oswalt called his general manager to ask if the Astros would be interested in restructuring his contract so that they could free up some payroll and perhaps pursue a top flight starting pitcher. The Astros graciously denied.

Roy Oswalt wants his team to win. He wants to win more than he wants to get paid. It's not his fault that Carlos Lee's salary jumps to $18.5m this year and they had to non-tender third baseman Ty Wigginton already.

Roy Oswalt probably made this offer so that the Astros would try to pursue his close friend and hunting buddy, but Roy Oswalt did all these things for the good of the team.

It must be nice.

Chipper Jones did something like this before to get Tim Hudson

Braves management essentially didn’t like it and behind closed doors effectively told him to STFU.

I imagine the Astros are doing the same thing. When players come out to the public and say stuff like that, it makes the players look like saints, but it really throws huge monkey wrenches into the long-term plans of many ball clubs. It puts the management on the spot, whether they take them up on the offer, or actually appear like they’ve got the financial motives that they really do have in mind.

In the end, the Braves did restructure Chipper’s contract, creating more funds and options towards the back end, but in accordance to John Scheurholz’s book, management didn’t want to explore that option, had he not opened his mouth.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

It wouldn't work exactly this way for Peavy

His contract is virtually timebomb to the team if Moores (or whoever) doesn’t somehow get some cash in the future, backloading it any more would be bad for the future, no doubt. But it’s still nice to see.

Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?
