Kevin Towers is spent after the Peavy deal falls through
- Philly Billy is in the studio with Darren Smith again even though he was let go earlier this week? What's going on here? It's a Christmas miracle!
- At this point in time Jim Hendry isn't inclined to make a deal for Jake Peavy. Towers didn't get into the details why, some of it probably had to do with the number of players and the money. Towers doesn't anticipate the Cubs coming back after Peavy.
- Towers did talk to the Angels and they wanted Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez. Towers shot it down quickly and said if they take both of them, they better be able to take him too.
- Yesterday Towers got a bad vibe from the Cubs. It's going to take a lot to get Peavy, if somebody doesn't step up then the Padres will keep him.
- The Cubs signing Dempster and Fukedome last year put them in a tough position to acquire Peavy, they would have had to get rid of Marquis' contract as well.
- Towers is spent.
- Better than average odds that Peavy will be a Padre on Opening Day. The train is back in the station.
- Alderson and Towers will talk to Peavy's agent to figure out where they go from here.
- The priority is getting a good deal for Peavy, more so than getting the payroll to $40m. There are other ways to shrink the payroll, Towers hopes by the beginning of the season he'll be able to get it down.
- The Padres will probably end up signing a Short Stop in the next couple of weeks to give the team some depth.
- Adding depth to the rotation and bullpen now becomes the priority.
- Towers guesses there is a chance to get Hoffman back, he hasn't heard if Hoffman has gotten any offers. The Padres need to take a deep breath and figure out where they go from here now that the Peavy deal is dead.
- Towers doesn't want to be in the position again where he didn't have leverage and the public knew Peavy's one preferred club.
- Padres are perfectly fine with Peavy staying in San Diego. Towers will be relieved to have all the rumors stop.
- Towers breaks down the Rule V draft.

how would the Angels NOT go for both?
it couldn’t hurt to ask…
i’m sure they’ll look to make a deal for Peavy alone.
Kotch would've had that.

Indeed
but I suppose it’s pretty normal that you feel down when you’ve been working to make something happen for a couple of months now and all you get is a soured relation with a franchise icon, an ace that doesn’t want to be here, fans that aren’t overly excited and a team that hasn’t really improved all that much. I still have faith that Towers will assemble a reasonably decent team for 2009 though. And even though prospects of 2009 aren’t all too positive I’m already longing for baseball in general and Padres baseball in particular.

Tired
I keep reading where Kevin Towers is tired. Why is he so tired?
He is dealing with one ballplayer and two maybe three other teams. Best I can tell they are scheduled meetings too. So why is he so tired? Tired of staring at spreadsheets maybe? But then again it’s not like he is actually doing that either. I am sure Paul and his crew brings the printouts to the meeeting’s.
So in between a few Vegas shows, impromptu press conference’s about the 1998 Lionel HO train set, and brewing coffee for the boys, what is Towers doing that makes him so tired?

KT is tired of being the chump
who has to dump salary. Everyone knows it, so he can’t get crap in trade.

dude, i'd be tired too
I imagine it to be a lot like conferences where you’re really trying to get business done. The stuff that gets said at scheduled meetings is nothing compared to chasing people down, being chased down, putting together last second plans because of information you’ve just heard that might make or break the deal that you’re working on. If DePo hears something about the Braves that might make the Cubs interested in something that might affect the Peavy trade, then KT has to process that information and start prioritizing what he has available, how he’s going to smooth things over with Hendry, what he’s going to have DePo go do next. I imagine it’s very whirlwind like.

I'll add to this trying to get work done while agents and players make public statements that undermine your position
In addition to the OP’s comment about only dealing with one player, if you think KT has only been working on Jake the past month or two–well to be blunt: you’re very wrong. There is the rule V draft, Hoffman, Greene, Giles, possibly Kouz, plus the entire rosters of interested trading parties, player developement during fall and winter leagues, scouting for the amateur draft by looking at the fall and winter leagues and I’m sure they’ve been making overtures (albeit unsuccessful at this point) to free agents in the majors and minors.

much less the same agent as Jake.

They weren't in studio
They were at Dave n Buster’s for Thursday night football, iirc.
Phil Nevin later joined them.

Correction
I recalled incorrectly, I remember Nev pausing mid-sentence and Darren explaining there were “distractions” there at the Tilted Kilt. :D

I hate talk radio
But sometimes I’d rather listen to something about the Padres and Chargers than a few songs I’ve heard a hundred times already.
"Whoa... You can't say stuff like that!"
"I get it Chief. I'll play ball. You just gotta blow the whistle and call the fouls. Alright?"

I'm racking my brain
Is there a more direct source for what the GM is up to than the GM’s own word hole?
Give me an example of a wrveres-approved media outlet.
