As we do every year we held a series of meetings with a large group of our baseball personnel (front office, field staff, and scouts), and ultimately decided on adding the following players: Matt Bush, Cesar Carrillo, Luis Durango, Jose Lobaton, Jackson Quezada, and Cesar Ramos. That brings our roster to 37 players, so we still have a few spots remaining as we approach the beginning of the winter.

Most of the decisions were pretty easy
Bush and Carrillo have to be protected because teams could easily pick them and have cause to just stick them on the DL instead of actually putting them on the major league man roster. Durango is a slow developing prospect who has some real hitting ability and is usable defensively, he could fill a Drew Macias-like role on the 40 man roster. Quezada is similar to Durango, but is could be a usable relief pitcher. Ramos is ready to make a major league contribution either as part of the rotation or a Mike Thompson-like emergency starter role. Lobaton is curious. The Padres have 3 home grown catchers all vying for major league time Nick Hundley, Colt Morton and Luke Carlin. They also have a top prospect catcher about to be in AA in Mitch Canham. So Lobaton is basically the backup AA or AAA catcher. I’ve heard his defense is solid, so maybe the Padres are grooming him as a future solid backup catcher, but its an odd use of a 40 man roster spot.
"Whoa... You can't say stuff like that!"
"I get it Chief. I'll play ball. You just gotta blow the whistle and call the fouls. Alright?"
