Questions about Brian Giles
I know it may seem like all I do around here is circle like a vulture and pick at the bloating corpse that is the San Diego Padres... come to think of it, that's pretty much all I've done since I joined the site. But you've got to understand that all I want to do is go back to AN and throw out an idea and create an intelligent, stimulating discussion. That typically means starting a conversation with enough information to feed both sides of the story.
So here I am crashing your party again.

I need to ask 2 questions today. The first is pretty simple. As Padres fans who have seen many a game, could Brain Giles be an average starting CF next year?
The second might cause a bit more discussion. Assuming Giles could play CF and that the entire sports media complex isn't completely wrong about the Padres' financial state, what would it take to make Brian Giles an Oakland A in 2009? You don't have to give me specific names just positions of need. With the Peavy-to-Atlanta deal DOA I imagine the priority list has changed somewhat since last we spoke.
Let me know what you think. Thanks.

No I don't think Giles could handle CF anymore
He really does not have the arm to do it and while he takes great routs to the ball I don’t think he has the speed anymore (not really sure if he ever has) to play CF every day. Giles is really a LF at this point in his career.
As far as what would it take to get him to go to Oakland? Prob a ML ready pitching prospect but Giles is a 10-5 guy and he would have to waive his NT clause which I kind of doubt he would do…

Thanks for the reply
For once I’m not too worried about a NTC/10-5 rights. Every sports news outlet has the Padres cutting payroll and if Towers/Anderson were worried about not being able to move Giles they don’t pick up his option.
I’m much more concerned by reports he couldn’t handle CF. If he can’t provide average defense I’m not interested.

Does anyone remember a guy named Jody Gerut….. Or Will Venable…. Why would we put Briles in center when we have Gey for Gerut and Venable standing by???

giles listed teams
all the NL West teams and atlanta
since last august after the red sox deal fell through he was almost headed to the A’s, so i think he’s aware there’s interest
since towers rebuilding plan has been slow to start and the cutting payroll issues, i think A’s would be a solid fit since they can take on that 1 yr deal and have a good amount of mlb ready pitchers that has been lacking in offers for other padres trades. i understand not going to boston, but would he have an issue going to a team a couple hours flight away still on the west coast? unless he really doesnt want to play in the AL, that might be the biggest hurdle

Giles is not a good fit unless he can play a solid-average CF

ya we kinda got this new guy in LF
goes by the name of hooligan, or Holliday, or something. I hear he’s pretty ok. Apparently he strongly detests puns on his name though.

Keep in mind
Giles gets banged up and will do everything he can to stay in the lineup. Loss of range and lack of arm strength can be overlooked in RF, but if you had to deal with a gimpy knee or a strained shoulder in CF the consequences would be more severe. Not to mention his arm strength would be lacking for a CF. I think his defense in CF would be on par with Johnny Damon or Ken Griffey complete with the associated reckless abandon.

On par with Damon and Griffey?
That’s not a compliment, especially considering the Grand Canyon of Petco. And furthermore neither of them are either playing CF in their home parks – both the Yanks and the Reds/White Sox were smart enough to move him out of there

Definsively...
as good as he is in RF I think he might struggle to be average defensively in CF. Probably under average. Still, his bat would more than make up for it

nice name, I've always had a soft spot for neifi.
kruk and kuipe would go on about his chicken for hours though (at least it seemed like it).

As an A's fan
I would’ve wanted Giles had we not gotten Holliday. He is one of the more underrated players in the game today. It’s too bad his brother sux so much.

Holiday
can play center in that park, and Giles could be move to a corner OF spot.
Giles is very underrated in all aspects of his game, and the A’s will do really well if they had him. No point waisting his effort and talent on our AA team.

Giles
Would be better off in LF and frankly might bring something worthwhile if he’d be willing to drop his no trade clause.
