If the Padres successfully trade Jake Peavy, Khalil Greene and Brian Giles, as they have already attempted, their payroll will be probably wind up somewhere just north of the Marlins' payroll.

Marlins payroll in 2008 was $22,650.000. They are expected to raise it to $40 million for 2009.

You know what's funny about this?

Back on August 10th…Chris Jenkins from the U-T wrote an article about Brian Giles and his decision to not accept a trade to the Red Sox. In it he wrote this:

As part of a pitch to get Brian Giles to accept a trade to the Red Sox this past week, a Padres executive painted a stark fiscal picture for 2009, saying club owner John Moores might shrink the payroll to $40 million.

The account comes from Giles’ teammates, who say they now expect the club to slash payroll and wage full-scale rebuilding this offseason.

At the time, everybody thought what a bunch of crap it was that they would drop the payroll to the $40 million range.

What do you think the payroll will be?

(Not in asking in my normal sarcastic, wiseass tone – just curious)

If they trade Peavy and Greene

and only get prospects in return (ie no one making over 400K) payroll will be under $35mil (thats with Giles at 9 and Hoffy at 4).

I Think it will be around 45-50

BTW, the Rays payroll was 43.745 in 2008.

Thanks for the clarification

(Making note in my Hello Kitty notebook that I keep beside the computer): Wonko attempts joke rather than finally admit he doesn’t know everything.

Here is a projected Padres Payroll for 2009

Projected Padres Payroll for 2009

Any players that were outrighted to AAA will probably be replaced by other players at or near the major league minimum.

If Peavy is traded, all of the players being mentioned would make the major league minimum. Peavy will make $11 million in 2009.

We don’t know what other possible trades are on the horizon, but Greene is pretty certain to be traded. Greene will make $6.5 million in 2009.

Kouzmanoff will be a probable trade if a ML ready outfielder is picked up in the Peavy trade. He is not arbitration eligible and will probably be renewed at the major league minimum.

Giles is probably not going to be traded until near the trading deadline.

Do you know what we get to do today? We get to talk baseball!

too late :)

I hooked up my accelerator pedal in my car to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.
