Hoffman's Agent: "I would say because of the way it was handled, it appears as though he's done as a Padre"
Agent: Hoffman era likely over in San Diego
"Trevor's unhappy with the way they've dealt with the situation," Thurman said. "I think if they didn't want him back, they should have just said they want to go a different direction, go younger, or, `Listen, we're going to cut payroll,' and sit down and have a man-to-man, face-to-face talk with him. I think he deserves that respect. Any player deserves it, but this is Trevor Hoffman. He's meant a lot to that organization."
Hoffman does deserve a certain level of respect, but I think Alderson believes he deserves espect as well and a player shouldn't try to go over his head and around the chain of command.
Thurman said Towers told him there were "some unhappy people in the organization" because details of the Padres' offer were reported in the media.
"I said, 'This is an excuse. You guys never wanted to re-sign him in the first place,'" Thurman said.
These arguments sure sound petty and childish coming from a bunch of professionals. Tom Krasovic of the UT said that Alderson had considered not re-signing Hoffman, before the offer was made.
"I said, 'What happened with the meeting with the three of you guys?' And he said, 'Well, when I told Sandy you guys wanted to have a meeting, he said no.' I said, 'Oh really, so you guys have been sitting on this for two weeks then?'"
This relationship between Hoffman and the Padres certainly is icy.

Sounds like it. He’s driving them apart into the arms of another team!

No player is bigger than an organization
But neither is any executive. Who has done more for the San Diego Padres organization, Alderson or Trevor? Who is more deserving of respect?
I hope Trevor signs with a team that will get him the opportunity to save 600 games and win a World Series ring. Then he can bring it back to San Diego the way Ray Borque brought the Stanley Cup back to Boston.

Since when??
Is an owner not meeting with a player when his personal life is in turmoil a sign of disrespect. It sounds like Trevor was disrespecting Sandy by trying to go over his head.

This was, in my opinion, a player thinking he was bigger than the team and getting slapped down.

I agree…..the same thing happened last time he was a free agent so this really shouldn’t be shocking to anyone.

This isn't about a single executive
SA doesn’t have executive authority to do as he pleases on personal whims.

Well hell
Let’s negotiate through the media then.
Is there ANYONE who thinks Trevor has three more years left in him? Other than if he’d like to provide his services as a charity, I shudder to think what the team would be paying for in a closer in 2011.
Think about that… Trevor Hoffman, closer for the Padres, 2011. Sorry Trevor, I ain’t buyin’.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?

Hoffman's Expectations
What exactly did Hoffman think he “deserved?” He’s been the 4th best reliever on the team 3 of the past 4 seasons and hasn’t been the best reliever on the team since 2001. $4m seems a lot to spend on pitcher like him.
I don’t know why Alderson is getting a bad rap here — I’m sure Moores is the one that wants to drop payroll. And is anyone surprised that he’s butchered this whole situation. Other than OK’ing the trade for Kevin Brown, he’s been a terrible owner. Remember it was his cheapness in 2004 that caused them to take Matt Bush instead of Jared Weaver which in the long-term has cost the Padres millions of dollars.
