Adrian Gonzalez will take part in the 2009 MLB All Star Game’s Home Run Derby

by The Kipper on Oct 27, 2008 4:51 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

People do realize

that moving in the fences helps the other team hit home runs just as much as it helps the padres.

Do you realize that fans like watching home runs?

We tried the no scoring thing. It doesn’t work, it’s not exciting to watch. Fans will just be thankful something is happening besides watching to guys play catch and balls being popped up every once in awhile.

So what you are saying is

Fans want to see us lose in high scoring games instead of losing in low scoring games?

Yes that's exactly right

I would rather we lose with something happening.

No way

High scoring games are boring. They take forever and require tons of pitching changes. I love that we have the best pitcher’s ballpark. The less scoring, the better chance that the game stays close and there is drama in every pitch.

Put your personal preference aside

Think about fans in general. Fans love offense. Baseball was huge during the steroid era. Fans love to see home runs and offense. You are in the vast minority. If Petco starts giving up some home runs the fans will love it.

If you're talking about selling tickets

then, yeah, you’re probably right. But building a winning baseball team, regardless of what the fans think, maybe not so much.

Winning... pssshh.

It’s all about building Adrian’s trade value.

I think

Fans already love Petco and changing it every couple of years is really going to get old. They built the ballpark a certain way and let’s not spend millions on something that doesn’t affect wins and losses. I pay for my tickets just like you do and I don’t want to see the money wasted on reshuffling deck chairs. I figure that attendance is the best sign of fan enjoyment and studies show that winning brings in fans, not run scoring. For example, the Dodgers are one of the top teams in attendance every year and they had 120 HRs hit at Dodger Stadium this year and 516 runs scored. The Padres had 133 and 519. I’m just not convinced that this will help fan enjoyment as much as others think it will.

Dodgers

have second largest market. Im sure if you did an attendance vs. population comparison the % would be lower than a lot of stadiums. And until this year, havent had much luck winning consistently. I think their success in attendance results from a dedicated fanbase and the nostalgia of being at “Dodger stadium”, much like Yankee stadium.

The Rays on the other hand hit a lot of home runs and win a lot and have one of the lowest fan attendances.

We're gonna dazzle you with our super play.

by soulSD on Oct 28, 2008 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe

But when the Yankees sucked in the 1980s, there wasn’t enough nostalgia for Yankee stadium to put butts in the seats. But I would agree that population plays part in attendance and the Dodgers present a vastly different market than San Diego. But, if offense was so important, I still think you’d see fewer season ticket holders in LA, but I believe they currently sit around 30,000-40,000 season ticket holders.

That is very...interesting

I can’t recall which radio interview it was – wasn’t too long ago though – and Alderson made it sound like a certainty that they were going to bring them in.

If they are moving it in

and it looks like they are, they are moving it in a lot more than I thought they would. Still, I’ve always supported moving the fences in and am excited to see this picture. Maybe Giles will become more of a home run threat now? Maybe?

Bring the fences in!

If we’re going to suck, then I’d much rather watch offense than frustrating ineptitude.
