Weak Division calls for Weak Team
The Padres are in the weakest division in baseball. Face it that the division winner had 84 wins. In every other division, they would be 3rd, 4th, and 5th place. The Padres just need to sign up a starter and maybe one or two hitters. If they could sign Derek Lowe that would be great. C.C. Sabathia is a long shot, but it is possible... In another blog, they said the Padres should bring back Greg Maddux. I don't think that is possible because they traded him to cross division rival the Dodgers. They need to greatly improve their hitting. Maybe they can resign Mike Cameron. What do you think the Padres should do to become the strongest team in a weak division?

Um, I'm not sure
that you’re up to date on the situation in San Diego.
This is Sandy Alderson’s team.
We will be farming homegrown talent for the next couple of years.
We’re cutting payroll for 2009.
Jake Peavy may be gone by then, which leaves us with Chris Young and Cha Seung Beck as our only two starters.
Bud Black is our manager.
I just vurped.
16 players on our current roster started this season in the minors.
Our starting SS had the worst season of his young career.
I’m not saying that we couldn’t have a few nice surprises in store for us next year, or that I don’t believe in miracles, but…
I don’t think that the Padres will become the strongest team in a weak division next year or that signing C.C. Sabathia is a long shot, but possible.
Dear Dasox313
“Weakest Divsion” means absolute squat, as does the amount of wins. Guess who had the best record in baseball? Guess who went 3 and out in the playoffs? Same team. Guess which team went to the World Series last year from the “weakest division”. Guess which team won the 2006 World Series, how many regular season games did they win?
By the way, your white sox had the second least amount of wins after the dodgers, the weak divsion rhetoric is getting old.
For the record, this is not my attempt to imply subtly that Belichick is nothing without cheating and Tom Brady. Seriously. I am straight-out saying: Belichick is nothing without cheating and Tom Brady ~ DJ Gallo

Wrong
A Lowe signing would be okay, but it does nothing to address the bullpen needs.
Sabathia is not a long shot, nor possible, given that team is cutting budget rather than adding to it.
They traded Maddux with his permission, as LA was the one team he was willing to go to. Also – MLB allows for players to be traded to any team, even ones they’ve previously played for.
Re-signing Cameron doesn’t make much sense now that they team is committing to youth. Unless he got younger in Milwaukee this yr? Did he get younger? That would be awesome.

The weak division thing is tired.
Every year ESPN proclaims one division or another to be the worst ever, for years to come. Every year it’s a different division.
Also, this isn’t the dodgers, the Padres can’t and shouldn’t have to absorb one idiotic contract after another. They should trade peavy for some solid pitching/MI prospects, unload Khalil greene for some OF help (twins, cardinals). Between the Rockies slipping back into the cellar, the dodgers sagging under those huge contracts and the giants continuing to completely suck, the only competition outside of next year is the D-backs.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.
