San Diego Padres Offseason Outlook
Over at The Outsiders Look I am in the midst of a team by team look into what I would do if I was running the show-some may be thankful that I am not! In a recent installment, I take a look at the Padres and what I think their 2009 Opening Day roster should look like.
As devout Padres fans, what do you think about what I've done? What would you have done differently?

For Starters
I don’t see how the Padres could convince/afford Mike Mussina and Pedro Martinez to play for their last place team.

RE: Convincing Efforts
For Mussina, it would be to get him back on the West Coast. Additionally, he would be able to move to a more ‘comfortable’ market in which he doesn’t have to be under 24/7 reporter scrutiny. I’m not sure Mussina would cost all that much at this point in his career.
For Pedro, it would be to rehab his image. If I’m the SD front office, I sell him the benefits of player AT PETCO. Offer him a one-year, incentive laden contract and tell him to EARN his 2010 contract with one of the big boys with artificially inflated numbers.
You do have a point, however. It may be difficult to get both to sign on the dotted line. However, with a very deep starting pitcher market, a quick offer may be enough to get things done.

Still
It’s two guys used to playing in the postseason deciding independently to join a team that nearly lost 100 games. How many times have you heard of Hall of Fame caliber players doing that at the end of their careers? Wouldn’t most retire first?

Back on the West Coast?
Along with the reasons Wonko stated, I’m not sure I follow your reasoning – he played three seasons at Stanford nearly 20 yrs ago – that was the only time he spent on the West Coast. He still lives in his hometown in PA and has been vocal about how important it was to him remain close to that area. I think he’d have exactly zero interest in going anywhere west.

weren't
the padres an out or two from the playoffs in 2007? have they truly regressed so much where they aren’t a few pieces from the playoffs? especially in THAT division?

Don't agree with picking up Ibanez
LF: Giles
CF: Venerable
RF: Gerut
Backup: Hairston
That’s tolerable and yeah we have to trade Kouz for pitching which would help
by TheAxManCometh on Oct 20, 2008 1:03 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Keep in mind
Gerut and Hairston are both somewhat injury prone, Giles is no spring chicken, and Maxy would be playing his first full season. We need somebody who can play out there as needed and preferably bat right handed (which of course would mean someone other than lefty Ibanez) without being a sinkhole in the lineup.

I have kept it in mind
1. We need to see what Venerable can do
2. Yeah both Gerut and Hairston are injury minded but I think Hairston is best suited for backup and PH duties whereas Gerut can play more like a full time starter. I think its the best option but yeah its risky.
3. Giles is the only one I trust to play almost a full season
4. I don’t like to have two outfielders on my bench but we could try to find another outfielder like a Juan Rivera and put Venerable in RF. Two outfielders means we need two positions players to cover the entire infield (plus one backup catcher)

Venerable = calling forth respect through age, character, and attainments
Venable = Padres outfielder

You like the 12 man pitching staff?
11 maybe. I’d prefer 10. This is the national league after all. I hope with Hensley and Ekstrom in the bullpen the Padres don’t throw away roster sports by carrying 12 pitchers anymore. I also hope they don’t throw away a roster spot on a backup SS. That’s what AAA is for. Save the bench spots for players that can hit.

Just Because
The National League has traditionally had dreadful leadoff hitters, does that mean a team should employ Juan Pierre for that position?
I prefer a deep bullpen where you can use a lot of match ups.

I think you missed the point
National leagues provides more opportunities for pinch hitters and doubles switches. You handicap yourself from making these by adding more pitchers who 10 ten years ago (when bullpens were smaller) would have been in AAA. I’d rather have talented pitchers pitch more innings and see more flexibility over a variety of positions instead of just one. It would also help if closers could go two innings every now, because the one-inning pansies that the save has created are one of the biggest player management problems in the league today.

i simply...
could not trust that outfield.

I think they have to see what they have in Venerable
and its at least two more years til Decker/Kublacki/Hunter get here with no guarantee they keep slugging it.
Maybe they’d go with Huffman LF Gerut/Venerable CF Giles RF

Huffman
I don’t think he played well enough in San Antonio to deserve to skip Portland.

Plus...
On another note, and maybe I’ve missed some latest news, but Bard is not expected back with the padres, whereas Hoffman is.
Also not sure Antonelli is ready for the ML.
by pjbno4 on Oct 22, 2008 9:27 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Antonelli will be in AAA
The Pads are working on getting Rodriguez acclimated to 2B, they picked up that kid Denker from the Giants and also E Gonzalez can fill in there tolerably well. Gives Antonelli more time
