Outfield options

So, spring training is a few weeks away.  While the young guys, Headley and Antonelli, will get a shot at OF in Spring training, I would rather see them start the year in AAA ball to keep there careers on the upward trend.

So we are not going to sign a star, but what we can sign is a reliable 4th outfielder to play LF and some CF.  Preferably batting left to platoon with Shrek.

Here are a few names:

1. Kenny Lofton

2. Shannon Stewart

3. Bobby Kielty

4. Brad Wilkerson

5. Corey Patterson

I think Lofton is the best choice, due to the fact he will be a good bench guy can play CF in the pinch, and still is a good pinch runner.  Bobby Kielty is one of those moneyball type guys, gets on base but has some flaws.

We signed Jody Gerut to a minor league deal.

Not a good sign
when one of your options is a player who WON A GRIEVANCE against an old club because his knee is that hosed.

Gerut
Was pretty promising not so long ago. Its not like they're handing him the starting job or anything. We can release him if we don't find him suitable, much like we did with Shea Hillenbrand last year.

Hitting .390/.488/.567 in the Venezuelan winter leagues doesn't hurt either.

You forgot Bonds
kidding.

sort of.

Lofton could still have some value, I think....but that would be one old ass outfield.

I think you can run Hairston out in LF for awhile while Headley and our other options get a little more seasoned at AAA.  If Hairston can't do a reasonable interpretation of his 07 self, then you call up Headley mid-season and cross your fingers.

btw, the Bill James predictions for Headley, which I'm sure a lot of people around here have seen, are insane.

I suggested Bonds
to some friends of mine and they just looked at me like I was drunk. Although I was, in a sense it's not too bad of an idea if he can be had on the cheap. He could platoon with Shrek in left and will definitely protect Gonzo in the line-up when he is in. Plus in the games that he doesn't start he would be a legitimate threat coming off the bench. Granted that he isn't already showered and on his way home by the 5th.....

post Mitchell Report
Bonds looks like an outrageous cheating-tastic a**hole cheater-face....like about 100 other guys, including Very Nice Man Andy Pettitte.  And probably give or take half of MLB in the Selig years.  Excuse? Nope.  Reason to like him? Nope.

But if he wanted to play left field for us for a fraction of what he would have normally cost....I'm not saying, "Go, yes, do it."  But it would be tempting. Like the Devil. Talking to Jesus. On Mount Baseball.

Good thing Goose and I weren't there...

Aby: Oh, by the way, what nationality are you?

Goose: My mother was a hamster and my father smells of elderberries. Why, what did you think I was?

Aby: Uh, I dunno... a f@#kin hypocrite?

Goose and others: [punching me in the face]

No effin' way.
Let's just sign Dane Cook and Ann Coulter while we're at it.

If Ann Coulter could post a .270/.480/.560
then I think I might let her outrageous politics slide (at least while she's on the field).  Guarantee you she's got a better chance of throwing out a runner at home than Bonds, too.

I dislike Bonds as a person as much as anyone else.  I'm talking strictly baseball.

We need this like we need a shot of B-12 in our bu
ttocks.

It would be a great baseball move, and it ain't happening.

We need that like I need a shot of AIDS in my sc
rotum.

It would be a terrible P.R. move; thank God it ain't happening.

Lofton
I think that's a solid idea, personally. He's still got some productivity left under his belt- and even if he doesn't, pick the guy up for good luck. He's played for 10 different teams and has been in the postseason 11 out of 16 years...

Those postseason appearances
are spread out over six different teams (three stints in Cleveland account for the rest).

Of course, this means nothing unless you're superstitious by nature.
