Way to start the night. Go Padres! Go Dodgers!
Just because I'm stuck in LA doesn't mean I don't love the Padres.

Just to head off the pessimism....
think of it this way: No matter what, we can be no worse off tonight than we were last night.  That's not something we've been able to say for 4 days.

Me? Personally? I'm experiencing a mother-effing win tonight.  Swinging Friars.

Oh phew
And as for the ball to Khalil, I thought error right away, but the ball took a funny hop off the bag.

by Phantom on Sep 25, 2007 7:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

How often do you see Khalil do that?
See. It's a curse. And we're only going to get it lifted by turning into the skid...which Blum and Khalil both did this inning.

2 out single!
That's no way to start a rally, you say? Well. In BIZARRO WORLD it is. And that's where we have to play while we're busy being cursed. Up is down. Black is white.

TURN INTO THE SKID, PADRES. WE CAN DO THIS.

Bud Black didn't acquire Tomko
Nor did Bud Black teach Matt Cain how to pitch.  I even like him batting Kouz in the 3 spot, because Kouz is the only one hitting...

by goose1 on Sep 25, 2007 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not talking about this game
I'm talking about how he is supposed to be the moral leader of a team that is going the complete opposite direction of where it is supposed to be going at the most crucial point in the season. Isn't it his primary job to motivate these guys? If he can't motivate them now, how they hell can he motivate them to do anything??? We aren't playing the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Mets or the D Backs here. We are playing the Rockies, Giants, and Brewers, all of which have very questionable pitching and with the exception of the rockies at home, very questionable hitting as well.

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Sep 25, 2007 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We have questionable hitting
And, aside from Peavy, questionable pitching.

I don't know. I can't get really upset at Black. And I don't really get why we're getting beat....but I don't think it's because our guys don't want it.  You really think Giles, Hairston, Bard, Gonzo, Kouz, Adrian etc. etc. are going out there and just NOT TRYING?  Because I don't.

It's really easy to see why we're behind tonight, and why we lost last night: big innings off shaky pitchers.

by goose1 on Sep 25, 2007 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly
Our guys don't want it because our motivational leader ISNT DOING HIS JOB.

Don't blame this on KT acquiring Tomko.

You kill me with that humor of yours.

by Winfield's Ghost on Sep 25, 2007 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really
if ANYTHING KT should be commended for getting Tomko. Has he not given us TWO quality start when we needed him most and we have won both games? Is it not true that we are still in THIS game as well, and is it not true that giving up 4 runs in say 6 or 7 innings is a decent start that gives your team a good chance to win??

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Sep 25, 2007 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Decent, yes.
I don't care what happened to Bradley or Cam. Losing FIVE straight games at this juncture in the season is beyond unacceptable.

by Drama on Sep 25, 2007 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure...but that's season-wide
the poor choices his managing might have lost us games in April, May, June, etc....

In this particular 4 game skid...I don't see Black as any more at fault than about a half dozen other guys.

by goose1 on Sep 25, 2007 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
if we had won those games back in April, May, June we wouldn't be in this mess would we? You gotta look at the big picture as well as the reality of the present. In both cases, BB is, in my humble opinion, at fault.

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Sep 25, 2007 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's just as bad.
Those games count just as much as these do. We might have a cushion to fall back on right now.

by Drama on Sep 25, 2007 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

what's your estimate of # of games
that black has cost us, over the season, all by himself, as manager?

by goose1 on Sep 25, 2007 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Tomko move was a calculated risk
And it's mostly paid off.  I was just pointing out that Bud Black hasn't done anything yet, you know, tonight to get himself fired.

Also: We have Bud Black. We could have had Dusty Baker.

We're totally in this
Make Cain throw pitches. Lots of pitches. Get into the Giants bullpen.  Phillies already lost tonight.  Penny is on the mound for the Dodgers--and (hopefully) that still gives them a shot...

OK WTF
OK, Cain is a pretty good pitcher, but he is throwing 4 seamers right down the middle. No movement just straight heat. Hes like a freaking batting cage right now. I could hit him. Something is so wrong with our guys, I can't put my finger on it. And Khalil looks like absolute SHIT right now.

by Drama on Sep 25, 2007 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be clear re: Black
I'm not nominating him for manager of the year.  I think he's cost us games over the course of this season.

BUT...in this particular ugly stretch...the Rockies sweep and now whatever the f*ck this giants series is...I don't actually think Black is at fault any more or less than the rest of the team.  The bats have gone dead.  Maybe our guys want it too much and they're 'pressing'--clearly they're swinging at bad pitches and not working counts.  Our pitching has pretty much collapsed (CY's worst outing of the ENTIRE SEASON last night).

Our season up in smoke...and why? why? why?

by Winfield's Ghost on Sep 25, 2007 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just because YOUR team is poorly coached
doesn't mean you have to take it out on Marty Schottenheimer. I mean we went 14-2 last season, I'm sure he'll make up for it this season. I mean, we should do well unless we go and do something really stupid like Fire Marty after Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips are already gone and we hire someone like Norv Turner. Its not like thats gonna happened.

why don't batters swing at 3-0
- Danny

by Padres fanatic92014 on Sep 25, 2007 8:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

They do sometimes.
I don't like 95% of the time. Just because the pitcher hasn't shown that he can throw a strike and you don't want to accidentally swing at ball four. They say if you swing at 3-0 pitch you damn well better get a hit.

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Sep 25, 2007 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

3-1 is just as good
a pitch, usually.

And if he's thrown three straight balls, maybe he's going to toss you a fourth...

Hairston getting drilled and Padres getting FIRED UP

Really
Why don't these guys learn?  He's gonna hit Hairston next time up and get warned, maybe tossed.  If he says nothing, he gets a warning a most.  So, so dumb.

Agreed 100%
That might go down as one of KT's best ever. They're not even gonna make the playoffs...and Liney will most likely sign elsewhere as a free agent.

Hairston started it when he showed up Cain
after he hit that monster homer. Cain didn't appreciate it too much either.

Hairston deserved to get his ass drilled, but the K was just as sweet!

by Hairston is Cains Bitch on Sep 25, 2007 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure it was so sweet
that it made up for his personal 17 loss season and the Giants being 20 games out. and by the way, you REALLY need to work on your material.

by Sam (sdsuaztec4) on Sep 25, 2007 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cain has dominated the Pads this year
but the Giants suck so they don't score for him. That's not his fault. Anyway, now it's spoiler time as we help the Phillies get the WC b/c the Padres can't beat a last place team!
