With all due respect....

to David Wells, but what the heck are we doing?

Star-divide

Nope...never been a major league pitcher...nope, not even minor league...and nope...not high school or little league.

But doesn't it make sense to move him to middle relief?  He just isn't a starter anymore.

I give him props...one of the greats, but lord have mercy...what do we do?

Ideally...
yes, that would be the thing to do. But realistically, who goes into his spot? All of our options are iffy at best. The only way I see it happening is if he gets injured or if KT snatches a starter off the waiver wire.
Ah, for the days that we complained about our two hit victories...

or
if KT got a starting pitcher at the deadline like he said he was going to

eh. there wasn't much out there.
pretty much everyone is looking for another starting pitcher. and there was basically one deal that got made at the deadline--matt morris went to the pirates.

knowing that wells has a propensity to get shelled--and once it starts, he has no ability at all to stop the bleeding--it seems like we basically  should start him with the expectation that hampson/cameron/brocail are coming in by the 5th or early 6th (hopefully BEFORE we're 7 runs back....).  not the best solution, but all there is.

today...man.  i get that we used a lot of pitchers in the giants series (those extra inning wins--great, we won!--had a cost).  but, really, was EVERYONE exhausted? really? there was NO ONE in the bullpen who could come in once it was, say, 4-3 cardinals, before the rolen homer? we're carrying a lot of pitchers right now....i sort of thought wells was part of the reason for that.

of course, the defense behind wells didn't help him much...

deep breaths though. peavy tomorrow.

I agree
He is good for 3, maybe 4 innings. Bud Black should know to automatically take him out after 4. That was proven with todays game unfortunately.

if only.
i was shoked towers didnt go after joe kennedy on waiver wire
are you gonna get a more decent back end guy than kennedy at this point....? i think not
prepare yourselve for some hefty servings of 10-5 losses and mike thompson relief appearances for dessert
I'd love to face this guy every time i come to the park....and go 0-3

Wells starts
He was lights out for like 4 1/3. I think Buddy needs to stick Wells on a pretty strict pitch count of 70 or so. Peavy and Young should go to about 150. That'll teach Peavy quick to leave a little something in the tank and not try to blow people away. Just be like, "Jake, no matter what happens, you're throwing 150 pitches tonight."

Wells
I agree that Wells should only throw a limited number of pitches.  But isn't the definition of a starter someone who can give you at LEAST 5 good innings and end up with a Win?  You can't start a guy knowing you're going to likely pull him out after just 4 innings.  What's the point of starting if you can't pick up the Win?

USMCGUNZ is right.  Wells needs to be moved to the bullpen as a long reliever.  I don't know about everyone else, but I wouldn't mind taking my chances with Helsley or Ledezma in the starting rotation.  They both looked pretty good on Saturday in what was a high-pressure game.
