Random Thoughts on a Thursday Morning

I am embarrassed to admit this, but as I've said so many times before - "Gaslamp Ball is a safe place. A place where we can feel free sharing our feelings. Think of GLB as a nest in a tree of trust and understanding. We can say anything here." So here goes...

Last night my blood pressure spiked up...I couldn't breathe...and my heart stopped for a fleeting second as I watched Mike Cameron's ball heading towards deep center for a grand slam. Then...Chris Young leaped and stretched his glove up over the centerfield wall. Everything changed in an instant. The ball was in his glove...the inning was over...the 5-2 lead was ripped from us. I just stared at the screen. I couldn't move. And that's when it happened. I stopped believing. For the first time in the last three seasons I...just...stopped. It was like instead of just pulling Cam's grand slam back...he opened up his glove and my heart was nestled in the web of his Rawlings. There are 56 games to go, and we're only 2.5 games out of first...so I know it's ridiculous to think that way.  But I haven't felt like that in a very long time - and it was horrible.

During Geoff Blum's interview on XX Sports Radio yesterday he mentioned that the Padres team that took the field on Tuesday night was "heartless". He's right. Aside from that burst in the 9th last night...there has been no spark, no heart, no fire. This will not be a popular statement given Blummer's 3 for 5 night last night and recent (somewhat) hot streak...but it's time to get Marcus out of his pullover in the dugout and back on the field. I have no desire to get into a stats war concerning who's a better hitter and whatnot. What I do know is this: Marcus doesn't take the field "heartless". This is NOT a shot at Geoff Blum. I'm just stating what we all know is true. Marcus is the guy that will kill a shortstop breaking up a double play and then pop-up, slap him on the ass with a grin and and ask him how his family is. Marcus is all fire and heart on the baseball diamond. He plays at 110% and has a blast doing it...I want to see that back on our field again. We NEED it.

Speaking of Marcus...we all need to channel a little more Giles brothers attitude here at Gaslamp Ball again. (Kepp your pants on jbox...that's not what I meant.) Last night during the Open Thread, our boy sdsuaztec4 made his triumphant return to GLB and Winfields Ghost promptly welcomed him back with a "SCHILLING?" I couldn't stop laughing. I know it's hard when you're losing all the time, but damn we need to get back to laughing and busting balls the way we used to in here. This place isn't some cold, baseball blog...it's an exremely dysfunctional family of sorts. Sadly, with our team struggling, we've been sniping at each other. Let's all work to get back to the love-fest we had going just a couple of months ago.

The journey to win back-to-back-to-back NL West Championships begins this afternoon with Jake Peavy driving the bus. Let's all enjoy the ride.
