Open Thread, 7/5: Padres vs Marlins
Our old friend, Byung-Hyun Kim, visits us today and our welcome wagon is Jake Peavy. Day game for us means that there's no reason why we can't all get a good night's rest tonight. A full eight hours. Unless you're a typical Gaslamp Baller, and in that case, you'll sleep when you're dead.
Switching gears. Here's a way to revolutionize baseball... When a pitcher strikes out the side, he scores a run for his team. Think about how awesome that would be.
It would be crazy awesome.
GO PADRES!!! EXPERIENCE THE STARTING PITCHER FOR THE NL ALL-STAR TEAM!!!

I'm going to miss the Marlins when they go
"Peavy is....Do the Padres have a starter that sucks? Because I haven't seen one. I really can't believe that the Padres are being so selfish to allow Peavy to start this game. I mean, it will only give him is normal four days of rest before the All-Star game and clearly he needs an extra day."
So good natured and funny. I hope they crush the Dodgers. Until then, though, let's go Padres!
what's the padres record when you open the thread?
I think he's going to strike out 37 people today. Technically, this isn't possible. But Jake doesn't take no sh*t from "technicalities."
well
Doesn't matter who is behind the plate

Sorry, guys, I'm feeling a little woe-is-me today.
If you are having one of "those" days
Change to very comfortable clothing, such as a sweat suit, and lie down on your bed. Open the package containing the thermometer and remove the thermometer and carefully place it on the bedside table so that it will not become chipped or broken.
Take the written material that accompanies the thermometer and as you read it you will notice in small print the statement that: *every rectal thermometer made by Q-Tip is PERSONALLY tested.
Now close your eyes and say out loud five times, "I am so glad that I do not work in quality control at the Q-Tip Company
too bad
actually
we also have the 2nd fewest hits....6th fewest total bases. probably a connection there.

I just can't remember
When RBS and I went to game 1 of the Dodgers series one month ago today, Aid was hitting just a notch below .300. He's dropped 30+ points since then and has looked pretty terrible doing so.
It's a lot easier to drop 30 points than pick up 30 points...

sigh
Was hoping Peavy would go into the break with 10 wins under his belt. The way things are looking, that won't happen. Not throwing his good stuff today.

we WILL win
7 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs
Our offense SUCKS SO MUCH IT HURTS. Please, Padres, hit the ball! We've scored 2 runs in 18 innings now.

Did the Dodgers not fire Eddie Murray...
So if 5th place in NL team batting average is not good enough for the Dojirs why is LAST place good enough for us????

This is ugly
Pitching IS NOT ENOUGH!!! This team SUCKS at bat. They should be embarassed at these outings against these Marlins scrub pitchers. And Atlanta is coming in?? With GOOD pitchers? What sorts of crazy shit are we going to have to pull off to get a win in THAT series??
Truly - someone's head needs to roll here. I don't care if we win the west again on the backs/arms of our pitchers. We will NEVER (go ahead, quote me) win a post season series with offense this feeble. NEVER.

Sorry for being negative....
Hey, I can't help it. We REALLY should have won this one.
I want our team to be in 1st place come the break. I want the announcers during the All-Star game to refer to us as the "first-place Padres" when talking about Peavy, Hoffman...and Young. I DO NOT want to hear the phrase "first-place Dodgers" when they refer to Martin and Penny.

We can only hope
they have to recognize the problem. barrett helps, maybe bradley will help, but these guys aren't the answer.

For fun
NL West SS
Player AB Avg OBP SLG OPS xBH
Furcal 312 .277 .344 .363 .707 20
Tulowitzki 302 .285 .358 .437 .795 25
Greene 301 .243 .280 .472 .752 38
Drew 290 .245 .310 .369 .679 25
Vizquel 274 .230 .281 .292 .573 12
Given the comparison, I can see that only Tulo has a better OPS. However, Khalil has far outslugged all of the SS in the NL West and I think he's arguably the best defender of the lot.
A-Gon
I sure hope the break helps...although we could sure use the old Adrian during the upcoming Atlanta series.
