Proctor's arm is pretty dead
Don't be so sure
"Scott Proctor is a power pitcher with a diverse pitch repertoire. Proctor's fastball ranges from 94 mph to almost 100, although he was known to throw beyond 100 as the closer for the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees' former AAA affiliate. As a former minor league starter, Proctor features several plus pitches. He will throw both four and two-seam fastballs. Proctor's secondary pitches include a mid-eighties slider, a high seventies curveball, and an occasional changeup in the low eighties. Scott will throw all but his changeup in any count, but his primary weapons are the four-seam fastball, the curve, and the slider. Proctor's power fastball/curve/slider combo and willingness to pitch multiple innings of relief have drawn comparisons to Scot Shields of the Los Angeles Angels."

KT loves to let the trade deadline pass and then play the waiver game. he does it just about every year.
a move i would absolutely LOVE and i haven't heard anything about is sending the pitching prospects we just got over to Toronto for Troy Glaus. he can play 3B, SS or 2B and is a right-handed hitter with a ton of power. he's a difference maker.

Ummmm, too much wishful thinking
by 19 51 @ Gaslamp Ball on Jul 31, 2007 10:27 AM PDT reply actions
I don't think we're getting anything recognizable
We'll get somebody that I think most Gaslamp Ballers would be like, "oh... we got him?"
i don't get this
-the braves have a veteran and a rookie at 1B, both playing decent, but to push for the playoffs they go get the biggest bat available.
-the phillies have a few guys who could fill in at 2B for a month for chase utley, but they go get a starter to fill his shoes and eventually help with the mess at 3B
we're not the only team that is "solid" at most positions and flawed at just one or two. that's why we have the record we have right now. but how are we ever going to get past the first round of the playoffs with a solid, but flawed team every year. hope and pray that our strengths cover our weaknesses? what about lessening the weaknesses? being aggressive?
the fans care, we write blogs, we go to games and WE WANT TO WIN. i, for one, am sick of being just good enough to get my heart ripped out in the playoffs. eight teams make the playoffs each year. we've made in the last few years even though we are TWENTY-SEVENTH OUT OF THIRTY TEAMS in terms of overall payroll. we're always somewhere in the top 10 in attendance, with the exception of the last couple years at the Q. what is the problem with actually going for it and adding more than a bench player?
i'm tired of this:
"currently second base for us is being covered by Marcus Giles (hitting under .200 for the last 3 months) and Geoff Blum (hitting .237 for the year). not to mention our starting SS is hitting .233 and our starting 3B is hitting .236. that's at least 3 starters hitting under .240 each night out!!!"
championships are built on defense and pitching and a team that can actually make contact.
by John Gennaro on Jul 31, 2007 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions
Those teams
We have almost zero major-league ready players in our system. This was obvious when we had to bring up Chase from AA ball after he only had 150 AB there.
Right now our A-ball team is killing it, but it is going to be another 3 years before we start seeing them in the majors, and another 2 years before they are tradeable pieces.

whoops
Atlanta Braves
Oakland Athletics
Minnesota Twins
Cincinnati Reds
KC Royals
these are teams that i always hear referred to as "cheap". these are the teams that cannot afford to sign their talented young players to long term deals (usually). we are not only in their league in terms of payroll, but we are far below them.
here's how they stack up in terms of attendance this year:
San Diego (12th)
Atlanta (14th)
Oakland (25th)
Minnesota (18th)
Cincinnati (22nd)
Kansas City (28th)
why are we spending less than them?

Alderson's thoughts
Also if you look at all the large contracts signed in the last 10 years very few have worked out, from the past offseason three of them already looks like complete flops (Schmidt, Zito and Drew), and I think that the others will be bad.
Here are few highlights of bad contracts that are still out there or just ended in the last year:
Michael Young: somehow this was a bad contract as soon as he signed even though he is the same player statstically as Jeter.
Helton: (can't be traded)
Hampton (was paid by two teams not to pitch for them)
Giambi,
Manny: (was put on waivers and NO team claimed him, of course this season they thought it was playable
Sweeney: (as soon as he signed this KC was doomed)
Damon: (had one good season for the yankess, not great, now he is terrible)
Nagle (I think this one came off the books two years ago, but he was dead money for 5 of the 8 years, and not good when he pitched)
AROD (Texas is paying the Yankess almost $5M a year for the remainder of the contract; You could argue he is worth that much money but it did not help out the Rangers)
Randy Johnson (somehow the D-Backs have eaten parts of the last TWO contracts he has signed so he wouldn't pitch for them?????).
Griffey (I like Jr. and think he is worth his salary but for 4 years he was blamed for all of the Reds problems).
Carl Pavano (one of the all time worsts).
What signings have worked recently? Pujols seems like he making his money, but once he turns 38 next year....I mean 28.....
Jeter is making $18M a year seems like that is good(great if you have a $220M payroll), but if you take him out of the Stadium his power. numbers go down signficantly.
What's Todd Walker upto?
Worse thought is that he could of been installed at 3b after Kouz's early struggles.

I dunno...
Those are really the two main types of players we target.
perhaps we could sign him under the "washed up star" clause, but whether or not he was ever actually a star is uncertain.
Ensberg
Ensberg attended Redondo Union High School (Redondo Beach, California) and starred in baseball and basketball.
Ensberg attended the University of Southern California and played third base for the 1998 National Champions. Current Astros Jason Lane and Eric Munson also played on that team.
I love Ensberg
His parents are pretty awesome. There was one game that I remember, when his dad was up and dancing to Copacabana being played over the speakers, and his parents had a coorordinated thing going, where they were sitting in different places in the stadium (the seating area was pretty tiny), and when he would make a good play, one of them would say "Whose boy is that?" and the other would say "That's my boy!" Needless to say, if we could make this happen at Petco, it would be fantastic.
In another game, one of the umpires had been hit by a ball, and knocked out of the game. For the remainder of the game, there was no third base umpire. A left handed batter was up, and with two strikes, he tried to check his swing. The home plate umpire didn't call a strike, so Munson appealed to third base, where Ensberg was all by his lonesome, there being no umpire. Ensberg signaled that he went, and the home plate umpire rang the guy up.
In conclusion, all of the Ensbergs are pretty awesome, and I'd love to have him as a Padre.

I really like Mackowiak and think he'll be a great addition to the bench. He isn't sexy, but a deep bench is just as important as a deep bullpen. I'd rather have him around than Hairston, who doesn't seem like a very capable pinch hitter. He might be a good player if he got the chance to start, but they'd have to be crazy to let him take at bats away from Jose Cruz, let alone the starters. Mackowiak is a guy who has proven that he can produce decent numbers as a starter.

Ensberg to the Padres
According to Buster Olney (via RotoWorld), the Padres have traded for third baseman Morgan Ensberg.
Kevin Kouzmanoff might be well-served with a platoon partner, but it would make sense to get someone who hits righties. Both Kouzmanoff and Ensberg excel against southpaws, Kouzmanoff more so this year.

I don't get the Ensberg deal at all.
I understand that Kouz was struggling against right-handed pitching. If you want to platoon him with a guy that can actually hit righties....cool. But that guy is NOT Morgan Ensberg.
Rob Mackowiak can hit righties...but he's barely played third base over the last two seasons. He's only played seven games at third since the start of the 2006 season. And he hasn't played 2nd base since the 2005 season. The guy is primarily an OF. How many more goddamn outfielders do we need?? I want to Giles, Cam and Bradley out there. That's IT.
Going into the dealine we needed a guy that could help out at second and another starting pitcher. We got neither. Did the Padres get better today? I don't know. Did the Portland Beavers get better? Probably.
Why we got Ensberg
So they're gambling that the last season and a half was an aberration.
I personally think Kouz is still the starter.

Joba Chamberlain
Overall, Chamberlain has 125 strikeouts and 27 walks in 84 1/3 innings, allowing 61 hits for a .203 opponents' average.
Did we get Loretta or not?

It's Ensberg and McGoviak
How do they accomodate these two on the roster?
- Send down Hairston - that's an acquisition aimed at next year/spring training
- Send down a pitcher - don't we now have THIRTEEN on the roster?
- A rash of Sept callups.
and all it took ...

I have a feeling...

Ensberg was great on my fantasy team...
He has not been NEARLY the same player since.

I'm a little upset with Mackowiak's attitude...
Someone better pee on him in the shower.

Yeah, for these guys?
Then again, I will never question KT on pitching trades....but will brutally critisize him on everything else (except Bradly).

wait is that for real?
I told you guys a few days ago...
But I'm not to sure about Wally. I like the guy, but I don't know if he's the right hitting instructor for this team. I don't see him being much different than Merv.

Compared to Mackowiak...
"I didn't perform well here at all," Ensberg told Houston television station KRIV. "I am really looking forward to a new start."
Cool...except for the "I didn't perform well" part.

Interesting day...
The reality is...most of the sports writers and blog sites OUTSIDE of San Diego regard KT and the Pads as winners in the trade deadlines...
Why? Because recognizing that there wasn't anyone that was really viable for us to pickup, KT did the one thing he could do, and that was upgrade the bench, and did so dirt cheap.
Think about it, we KNOW we are going to be pulling Wells, Germano, Maddux out at 6th or 7th...in these games, if any of these bench guys came up big for us, and they had their chances, maybe the outcomes of some of these games are different.
I'm upset that we got no big names, but I'm glad we upgraded the bench and did so for nothing.
Um...hello, isn't Milton Bradley doing essentially what this supposed "big named bat" would have been doing.
Second base...hmmm...options aren't over, people can clear waivers, it isn't a far fetched thought that we could still pick up a viable 2nd baseman by the end of the year.
i think we made some decent moves, considering
but, really, what was out there? were we going to get teixeira or gagne?
i was interested in that igawa rumor. i've watched kei igawa be awful this year for the yankees...but i think a fresh start in petco on a good staff--and out of the AL east and the excruciating limelight of new york--might have done him some good. certainly no worse than a lot of germano/wells starts.
cut Machowiak a little slack
Besides, once he gets to SD -- I think the "disappointment" will probably go away. I mean, if you're a ballplayer, how could you not want to play in SD? Weather's great, people are nice, new ballpark, camo uniforms, etc . ..

Compared to our us
Compared to them, all the deadline trading action in the West went down in SD. (Not to mention we also fire our hitting coach.) Does all this make it look like we're scrambling in a panic to make our team better, while the other teams are more confident with what they have?
