Padre Pitching and the National Spotlight

I may be talking out of my hiney, but it seems like a bad trend has developed over the last 2 seasons where nationally televised Padre games involve oddly poor pitching performances from our hallowed staff.

  1. Trevor Hoffman in last year's All Star Game...
  2. Last year's playoffs (exception being CY)
Although losing to St. Louis had MORE to do with bad offense
  1. Jackie Robinson Day this year...
  2. The two weekend games with the Braves most recently and...
  3. CY getting the loss in last night's All Star Game
Is there a pattern here or am I just being a negative a-hole?

Regards,

A Concerned Friar Fanatic

Loss sucks
But I doubt that anybody really paid attention to the fact that Chris Young gave up a home run so much as Ichiro got a lucky bounce and is very very fast.

Also, I think LaRussa's national exposure has been a little more suspect than ours. We'll change that up in October.

eh - just one of those things
The percentages will catch up - our pitchers are too good. Yeah, it sucks that we've had some flukey performances on National TV, but it's no biggie.

Don't overlook
Jake and Trevor's scoreless innings last night.  Sure, they will unfortunately be overshadowed by having Chris Young as the LP, but they did not disappoint.

And even for CY
I think any negative perception that he might get due to the loss is tempered by the fact that the runs were given up on a play that everyone realizes was a fluke.

If you saw it, there's no question that it was a fluke play, but even if you didn't see or hear about the details of the play, in-the-park home runs don't happen without something screwy happening.

It's kind of a bummer
that CY gets pinned with the loss, on paper.  The game was really lost by Billy Wagner giving up the two-run homer to Carl Crawford in the 7th.  If that hadn't happened, NL wins 4-3.

But I know..."pitcher of record" and blah-blah-blah...
