Linebrink for Glaus?

WestCoastBias recently made the following comment in response to an MLBTR posting:

Could Kevin Towers pull off a Linebrink for Glaus swap? That way Kouz could tear up in AAA for a full year. There's been rumbling in the past that the Padres have the money for a big trade and this could be it. KT could add a prospect to sweeten the deal. Chase Headley perhaps? It was rumored that Linebrink/Headley was offered for Sheffield so it's reasonable to expect that to be a solid bounty for Glaus as well.

This would be a trade that would add extremely valuable players to both sides. With Ryan out, JP will want a legitimate back of the bullpen arm and Linebrink can fill that. For the Padres, Glaus could be the power threat they need to go all the way. A 1-2 right side/left side punch by him and Gonzalez could be deadly and too tempting for KT to pass on.

I'm intrigued. As noted in the original posting, Glaus makes $10.75MM this year and $12.75MM in '08. Although injury prone, he's obviously reliable for big numbers and the Blue Jays are all but out of it. We've got the cash. Do we have the cojones?

Coach Kentara
was saying that there was no way the Padres were going to get Glaus.  Said the price was too high.  Also he said that Troy was a prima donna, which may be the first negative thing I've heard Coach say about anybody.

Glaus
I'd trade Liney and Chase for him right now. This trade makes perfect sense for us.

Toronto...
Riding an 8 game losing streak and already 9.5 games out of first place.

Glaus batting .328 with 6 HR's and 14 RBI in just 19 games.

Glaus
Would be hard to say no to that deal, if Toronto would agree.

I've heard the same thing about Glaus being a pain in the ass, though - not the easiest guy to get along with.  The injuries would concern me as well.

But if Toronto would say yes, you have to do it, considering the anemic offensive output right now.

And I saw Headley play last week for SA - guy is an out and out stud.  Too early for him to come to the MLB level right now, but he's going to be one of those guys down the road that everyone bitches about the Pads trading.

honestly
I'd be a lot more concerned about whether or not the guy can hit, rather than if he's a poopy-pants in the clubhouse. Intangible: Grumpyness Factor (GqF) Tangible: Home Runs (HR)
I am part of a team within a team. And the MVP of my team is named Kory.

Right now
I completely agree.  I'd be completely satisfied trading for an assface if he can hit.

Is Jeff Kent available?
And can he play third??

By any chance, is your email address tim.sullivan@uniontrib.com?

Drama...
No, this ain't no Sullivan. But you have to admit that on the "assfaces-that-can-hit" scale, Kent is way up there. Much higher than Nevin.

Maybe
Yes, I love the idea of a 1-2 righty/lefty power threat in the middle of the lineup.

But..if the rest of the team does not get ON BASE for those guys to drive in?? What about the other 6 spots in the lineup? Gilly Jr has cooled off, Gilly Sr is still not in stride, Greeney is back in a slump, Cameron may be swinging better, but that is not saying much! It's really ugly from top to bottom.

That's funny
Maybe it was just this last series with Atlanta, but I see the problem as guys getting on base and being stranded there -- essentially, a problem with clutch hitting.  Aside from A-Gone (and arguably Greeny), where are our RBI guys?

by TheGrandHatching on May 10, 2007 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's because
If the guy on base IS your main RBI guy - then there is no one to drive him in!!

One game we had 3(!!) hits and 2 runs. I'd say that's pretty efficient. But we lost because it was not enough.

So even if someone lucks into a walk or gets HBP or maybe we do miraculously string together a couple of hits - that THIRD one? The one that creates RUNS? Yeah - pushing your luck there with this group.

Troy Glaus....
I was talking to my buddy this morning about the possibility of a trade for Glaus. The comments about him being a prima donna and a pain in the ass came up.  The truth is, does anyone really believe that anyone currently on our roster would EVER let ANYONE come into our clubhouse and start acting like a dick? I mean seriously...this is a legitimate point. Even if a guy tried, how quickly would that get handled? How fast would Marcus sit on his lap buck naked in the middle of an interview? How about a first ballot HOF'r taking a whiz on him in the shower? Brian shaving his man sack next to his locker? The kindness and humility of a Trevor Hoffman? There are maybe 2 or 3 players in all of baseball that could walk in there and inpose his will on that team. Troy Glaus is not one of them. I have to agree with NYCPadre. I don't see the character "issue" as any issue at all. The guy hits...and we need him.

Makes sense
Unless he just comes in, doesn't like it and decides he's "hurt" and shuts it down - which is sort of what he's been accused of in the past.

But since "shutting it down" isn't much different from "can't hit for shit", you have to make the deal.

by Winfield's Ghost on May 11, 2007 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see your point...
But I just don't think that type of shit will fly in that locker room. Are we the best team in baseball right now? No. Obviously not. But I can't imagine there is a better clubhouse in baseball as far as a better mix of guys. He'd be coming home. Going to a team that isn't, for all intents and purposes already out of the playoffs. I think it would be hard to look a Greg Maddux, a David Wells or a Giles brother in the face and say I'm to hurt to give it a go today. If he can't be happy with this team...it ain't ever gonna happen for him.

Also
Peavy would take his parking space. (assuming Jake doesn't just leave his car idling in the street somewhere)

That's funny
We really have been negligent in coming up with more Peavy parking jokes, haven't we?

I'll start making more of an effort.

by Winfield's Ghost on May 11, 2007 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Peavy parking...
The first day Glaus reports to the Padres he rolls into the player lot and parks in the absolute worst spot in the lot. Gets out of his car...there's Jake.

Jake: "What the f** do you think you're doing? Get out of my spot."

Troy: "Sorry, Jake. No problem."

Troy moves his car to another crappy spot. Gets out of his car...there's Jake.

Jake: "What the f** do you think you're doing? Get out of my spot."

Troy: "Ummmm..."

Yep
"If he can't be happy with this team...it ain't ever gonna happen for him."

Which is just about what I've heard about him since his UCLA days...

But I agree - if there's any group that's gonna keep him in line, it's this one.  That's why its worth trying to get him if he's available.

Now we just need to convince KT about taking on that whole big salary thing...

by Winfield's Ghost on May 11, 2007 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The salary...
I can't imagine he couldn't get Toronto to eat at least a small portion of that salary. And we've all read KT and Sandy saying that the money is there for the right player.

Making Troy Happy
Who the f**k cares if this guy is happy? To start with, he has about 10 million plus reasons just this year to be doing backflips AND doing it in San Diego. "See ball, hit ball alot" is all he has to think about. And if that isn't enough, Buddy should try this approach:

The Crazy Left Hander: Welcome to the team Troy.

Troy: Thanks Skip.

TCLH: Troy, since rumor around the league is you are somewhat of a prima donna shitbird that may not be happy in our little group, I have decided on a "probation period" for the start of your time here with the Padres.

Troy: What the....

TCLH: Your locker will be between the Giles brothers. And yes, all the things you've heard about the brothers Giles are true and probably much worse. Keep the average over, say, .315 and give us 20 jacks by the break and we may move you by Gonzo or CY.

Troy: But Skip, I...

TCLH: Again, welcome Troy and try and be happy!

I gotta say, it feels like this whole thing is gaining momentum.  Here's another post from MLBTR:

Bad News...
Glaus had to leave Friday night's game after apparently re-injuring his left foot running to first base in the bottom of the first inning.

In all fairness
Running to first base is really, really hard.
