Dodger Fans throw food and beer at Padres fans

Gaslamp Baller Peavyforprez08 saw the incident take place last Friday, Jackie Robinson day:

I saw that on Friday night and it was one of the craziest things I have ever seen at a game. I was in the bleachers and that was in the upper deck. I looked up and saw a bunch of people standing up and running out of a section with drinks flying everywhere. This video only catches the tail end of it where the padre fans are leaving. The 3 or 4 padres fans for some reason just sat there for about 2 minutes while the section cleared out and that is when things got ugly. I saw at least 25 beers fly at them and hit them hard. security did absolutely nothing, it was amazing. the security was terrible all night there...i saw a few girls in my section get their padre hats knocked off their heads and thrown around and then tons of peanuts thrown at them.

i was wondering if anyone had a video of this, it was pretty crazy...too bad the video only gets the end of it

Was that Dodger Security
doing absolutely nothing at the top of the stairs? What a disgusting scene, hope you're proud of yourself Dodger Fan.

Some of those beer throwers
have better arms than Juan Pierre.  Maybe it was some sort of tryout.

economics
Padres fans in Dodgers stadium = more money for the Dodgers = higher payroll, bigger names, better team.

So yes, by all means berate them for who they're cheering for, even though about 90% of the people at Chavez Ravine would never make the trip down to Petco to support their team.

I'll never understand people being abused for the team they root for.  That's the equivolent of abusing a family for where they live or the type of dog they own.  It just makes no sense.

And it's not like
the Padres fans were doing anything but just sitting in their seats watching the game.

How do we as Padres fans deal with this?
Next time the Dodgers are in town and the "Blew Crue" act their typical way, let's kill them with love.  Let's be over nice to them so they feel guilty and spend more of their LA money at Randy Jones BBQ and the HOF Restaurant.  I really like the post about contacting the head of Dodger Security but why stop there?  I think Bob Watson and some of the NY based MLB guys need to know about this.  I wonder how we can get Mr. Alderson to inform them?
Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I told you guys
Dodger fan became infect with RaiderNation mentality when the Raiders invaded LA. They were not this bad when I was growing up and going to games at the Ravine. Change of ownership + change of fan base = Current version of Dodger Fan.

Agreed
My grandparents lived in Long Beach so as a kid - late 70's, early 80's - we used to go to a lot of Dodger games when we'd go visit.  It was nothing like it is now.  The Raiders really did change the fan culture there.

by Winfield's Ghost on Apr 16, 2007 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will tweek your equation
(Change of ownership + change of fan base)/(Raiders leave town) x (how bad the Raiders suck during the previous season) = current version of Dodger Fan

My guess is that the Padre Fans did nothing to provoke this. Peanut throwing must be standard behavior because I've seen that at a lot of Dodger games. It doesn't matter if you're there rooting for the Giants or Padres or Phillies, you're getting peanuts thrown at you. But hey, it's better to have peanuts thrown at you than a shiv in the gut.

Shahram Ariane
Anybody know how I can get Shahram Ariane's email address? He's the Director of Dodger Security and Public Relations and I'd like to hear what he has to say about these incidents.

Operations Director
http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/la/community/executives/rosenberg.html

Lon Rosenberg is entering his sixth season with the Dodgers and second as Vice President, Stadium Operations. His duties include managing the 330-acre Dodger Stadium property and all of the event services, including security, medical services, food service, facilities and maintenance, ushers, ticket takers, and gardeners, in addition to coordinating all concerts and non-baseball events.
Rosenberg has established an extensive background in the sports and entertainment field, and has proven an understanding and a high level of commitment to quality service and satisfaction for Dodger fans. With extensive ties to Dodger Stadium throughout his career, he has a strong knowledge of the issues, people, and history involved in making the venue as safe, clean, and fan- and family-friendly as the day it opened more than 40 years ago.

_________

The last sentence from this clip of his bio doesn't appear to be true from this blog and the YouTube video.  If Dodger Stadium is anything like PETCO you can be certain that someone has video of the entire situation as it developed.  What has to happen before the Police are involved and criminal charges?  Is a Padres fan going to have to get punched out?  This reeks of million dollar lawsuits...

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I was there all weekend
See my diary for more info, but for the most part the only physical throwing of stuff happened when Padre fans provoked it by standing up and showing their colors to get attention.

I was subjected to A LOT of verbal abuse though and I don't think I've ever seen anything similar at Padre games in my 20+ years of being a fan.

Dodger fans are a cruel, classless bunch.

New poster here...
and after watching that, i just wanted to add my horror story of my first game at dodger stadium. My girlfriend (who happens to be a dodger fan...ehhh) bought me tickets to the padres-dodgers matchup last year during the final stretch of the season. I wasnt even sitting near the cheap seats in OF but nonetheless i was spit on, pushed, and threatened with urine in the bathroom. I was starting to get pretty fing sick of it and on the way out in the parking lot(after the pads won by 9 or something)a bunch of guys starting giving my girlfriend crap about being "with" a padre fan. i stupidly mouthed off (saying something like "dude, you just f*ing lost"). Lets just say i would have been stabbed had it not been for the pleas of my girlfriend.

All in all i couldnt believe that their security wasnt more aware.Maybe they were and they dont care...pretty disgusting.

Just out of curiosity, can someone sue the stadium/team for negligance if they recieve injury or threats while inside? Who's resposible?

they have no class
that just shows how dodger fans are a bunch of loud mouths and classless people. my brother and i were trying to persuade my dad to take us to see the padres in l.a. but now that i saw how bad the situation actually is, i really don't want to go there to just get threats and get stuff thrown at. i can't believe how bad the security is over there.... i was speechless when i saw the video

how rude the Dodgers were against the Padres fan. That is absolutely crazy what they did. There's no excuse for how they acted.

My Saturday
I went up and saw Saturdays game with a bunch of friends. Most of us were in padres gear. We got a little freindly ribbing in the parking lot while we were tailgating but nothing serious. When we got to our seats and the game started getting lopsided people were leaving in droves. We were in the very last row in the loge section behind homeplate. Suddenly there were a group of 8 or so guys who let us know they were from East L.A. and that security wasn't around. Our group played it cool and we realized they were just fooling around. They ended up leaving with a peace sign. Then 2 cops showed up and stood behind us until it was over. While we were walking back to the car we got a little more ribbing from a super drunk  Dodger fan who repeatedly told my wife how he wanted to "tea-bag" her. All in all it was a pretty good night and we had a blast but something tells me if we didn't play it cool those vatos locos would have started something they wouldn't have enjoyed... cause when you push me... I get crazeee.

I will say that in 1984
I had this happen to me in the NLCS, as a Cubs fan in then-Jack Murphy Stadium. It really wasn't safe for anybody in blue during that 3-game series. I was even assaulted, by a drunken idiot. It can happen anywhere alcohol is served....

FYI, I'm surprised you were not stopped from tailgating. It's not permitted in the parking lot.

And speaking of tailgating, can we not admit that many Chargers games can get out of hand with all the alcohol flowing? I've been the the Q and have seen some outrageous behavior, and the Raiders were not the opponent.

I didn't tar 1984 Padres fans with a wide brush and I don't think this is reflective of all Dodgers fans. I've never, ever been hassled as a Cubs fan there -- but, it could be because, as usual, there are thousands of Cubs fans at the games. Strength in numbers.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 16, 2007 11:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

A wide brush?
I don't think we are doing that, but when fans have at least 25 beers thrown at them, it's not just a small group, it's a mob.

Everybody understands the one drunk guy or the few hecklers, but I think when things start looking like a riot then something needs to be done by security.

by jbox on Apr 17, 2007 8:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True
I know quite a few Dodger fans who are friendly and courteous (season ticket holders who give me tickets to games they can't attend against the Padres). We just use the wide brush because we hate the team and have those selective Dodger fans even more. We can't help it. Perhaps our collective hatred makes us act a little more dramatic about how appalling Dodger fan acts. Not ALL of them are that bad, just roughly 85% of them.

And yes, alcohol usually turns regular, ol' obnoxious people into insufferable a-holes. Although, the Petco insufferable, drunken a-holes usually don't start chucking beers at people or sticking shivs in someone's kidney. The Petco a-holes just make drunken, derogatory comments about Phil Nevin.

Disgracing Jackie
I sent an email into the Dodger organization and I suggest that everyone else do the same.  I'm guessing Jackie Robinson would be didgusted to see ordinary fans being abused in a way that may have been similar to what The Man experienced himself while breaking the color barrier.

Leave it to a Dodger fan to completely miss the point of that great celebration.  All Dodgers fans should be ashamed and embarrassed.

Let's call it what it is
I will no longer refer to our NL West rival in Los Angeles as the Dodgers, that is it. From now on, I will only refer to them as the LA Raiders.

My horrific experience at Dodger Stadium
Having grown up in San Diego, I am a lifelong Padre fan. But I've lived in LA since '85.

In 2004, as the Director of Marketing for my company, I was the fortunate person in charge of Dodger season tickets. We had 4 seats in the loge level out near the left field corner.

One game when the Padres were in town, I went with my wife (Dodger fan) and another couple (Yankees and Indians fans, respectively). I was in my full Padre get-up (SD hat, Padres away jersey) and my friend's wife was wearing a Yankee cap.

During the game, I received everything from good natured ribbing to more aggressive heckling. At one point a group of miscreant Dodger fans several rows in front of me were laying it on thick with the "Padres suck" taunts (which always amuses me really, since we've owned the Dodgers in recent history). I did my best to just brush it off and get on with enjoying the game.

The game ended, and our group began our ascent up the steps on our way out. As I reached the top of the stairs, without any warning I was pelted with a full beer from that same group, who had obviously hurried up the stairs on the other side of our section in order to cut us off and wait for us at the top of the stairs.

Before I could blink, four of these numbskulls were in our faces, yelling and threatening us. One of them was a woman, who approached and began attacking (punching) my wife. Did I mention that (1) my wife was 7 months pregnant (quite obviously!) and (2) my wife is a DODGER fan?!?!

In another instant, before I could even take a step towards my wife, I had a huge gangster looking guy in my face, starting to wind up for a punch to my face. I'm not normally one to fight, but it was like a matter of survival at that point, so I managed to get the guy in a headlock and drop him to the ground. Once I had him down I started yelling "security!!!" as loud as I could.

While that was going on, my female friend had jumped in front of the woman who was swinging at my pregnant wife, pointing out the obvious--that my wife was pregnant. The woman yelled at my friend, "I don't care, Yankee b*tch!" and started attacking her, wrestling her to the ground and injuring her back.

While this was going there were hundreds of fans walking around, and no one did anything to intervene. After perhaps a full minute (which seems like an eternity when you have some huge guy in a headlock and you're worried about the safety of your pregnant wife and your friends) "security"  finally showed up. In the form of a female security guard, about 40 years old, 5'2" and 115 pounds. She was helpless to do anything so she called for more security. Eventually a few more showed up and that allowed us to get separated from these hooligans.

At the point I angrily demanded to speak to the police as I wished to press charges. There weren't any police around at any point during this whole incident. The security guards were completely resistant to our requests, telling us all the reasons we didn't want to talk to the police, saying it would take a long time, we'd be questioned for ours, and the other side would press charges, too.

The girls in our group, frightened and shaken, just wanted to leave immediately. So security provided a car to escort us from the gate to our car.

I don't have those season tickets anymore, and I don't miss them.

by PadFanInLA on Apr 17, 2007 6:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would press charges
I would hire a lawyer.  I'm especially sensitive to child in womb safety.

You have no idea how much danger your wife and future child was in.

No physical harm done
Well, it's 3 years later, and I am happy to say my wife and young son have no ill effects. I don't think the assailant got in a solid blow on my wife (thank God).

My wife (the Dodger fan) and I (the Padre fan) have been battling for the heart and mind of our little boy (as far as his team allegiance goes). I'm winning! I've bought him a bunch of Padres gear, and yesterday he said to my wife, "You like Dodgers? I like Padres!!"

Bringing the kids up right....
My daughter Riley is now almost three and she's been sporting Padre gear since she was a couple of months old. When ever she sees me watching a Padres game on the computer...or ANY sport on TV...she says "Go Padres, Daddy!". Classic.

My wife is now pregnant with our second...a boy. He's due on July 25th. He already has a bunch of Padre gear waiting for him. I just scored him a Nike Padre Brian Giles onesie with little Padres shorts.

Some might call it brain-washing...I just call it a gentle nudge in the right direction.

Thanks Guys...
There are two reasons I decided to go with a Brian Giles onesie for "Jack's" first official Padre jersey.
  1.  When he's born he'll have "Giles Hair"...meaning hair only on top of his head, no where else.
  2. When he's born he'll be just like Giles is in the clubhouse...buck naked.
