Winter Meeting Padre Rumors

So far from what I have gathered today on MLBtraderumors.com it has been a busy day in baseball.  The Tigers came away with Cabrera and Willis and more teams are closing in on Johan.  But here are the Padres rumors that I have heard recently. (all from MLBtraderumors.com)

-The Padres are the frontrunner to acquire Mark Prior, but Dusty Baker's Reds are also interested.  The Reds idea first surfaced here.  The Padres, though, have made many deals with the Cubs over the past few years as Jim Hendry and Kevin Towers work well together.

-Jake Peavy will get a three-year, $52MM extension with a $22MM option for 2013.  Who knows how the Padres will feel about that option when they get there.  Peavy will earn $15MM in 2010, $16MM in '11, and $17MM in '12.  The '13 option has a $4MM buyout attached.
(love seeing the padres spend on thier superstar. 22 mil in '13 wow.)

-The Padres like lefties Glendon Rusch and Shawn Estes, and may sign both after the Rule 5 as a means of adding starting depth. (eh)

-According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Padres are nearing a deal to acquire Luke Scott from the Astros.  No word on the return yet.  I'm curious - Scott seemed like a solid bargain acquisition and it's no surprise Kevin Towers got him ( like this move)

-Apparently Neal Huntington thinks Nate McLouth is not the answer in center field, because he's been aggressively shopping the 26 year-old.  Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs, Padres, Phillies, and Braves are interested.

-as you know, the Cards met with the Padres to discuss Jim Edmonds.  The Friars also have their eye on Anthony Reyes.  Maybe the Cards can pry Kevin Kouzmanoff loose? (not getting KK.  I hate edmonds, dont really like reyes either)

thats about it for today...pretty interesting. i think we are going to be outta luck for fukudome, rumors say he wants to sign with the cubs and my guess is he will command more money than we can afford.  cant wait to see what happens tomorrow...

1090 Interviews today
Sandy A. was on Too Much Show today and shot down Prior, Edmonds and Scott. Said Prior was unlikely, debunked the Scott rumor and basically said Edmonds was too old and was not what they were looking for.

But you never know. We could wind up with all three. I still see Prior coming.

Personally I'm upset with the post that said Fukudome was "almost certainly" going to the Cubs. I think he would be a great addition.

Also the guys derived from their conversation with KT that Cameron might be on his way back.

We'll see! Been fun so far. Pads have definitely been in the mix far more than any other NL West team.

Now that the Angels won't get Cabrera...
could they possibly talk to the Padres about a Kouzmanoff or Headley/Willits trade? I know that Willits was supposed to go to Florida for Cabrera but now that he isn't, would we try and pursue him?

I would.

That is way too much.
Willits is ok but not worth either of those two.

maybe its just me but
i wouldn't trade either of them for willits, if you could get something else in return i would think about it but not straight up

Prior
If Prior went back to pitching for Dusty Baker, he'd  be an idiot.

I hope the Pads get him
Yeah 3 year 24 million deal. Unfortunately I doubt that will be enough because he was expected to make 10-12 million a year. However the Padres do seem like they would consider increasing the offer to compete for him. Unfortunately those d-bag cubs who spend a boat load every year but do nothing with it will probably give him 13-14 a year because they overspend

Contrary to my post I like the cubs I just think their fans talk an awful lot of smack for a team that never lives up to its potential with the payroll they have.Plus big market teams just make me sick and they crash all the offseason dreams that us fans of  small market teams wish for. haha

Kosuke
According to this article, they would offer him at least 3/30, so I wouldn't give up hope yet. Underspending their budget last year might payoff big this year. Also, Kosuke's agent said he doesn't see a deal being imminent, so all that talk about the Cubs being about to sign him might be a lot of posturing. I see Petco and the Padres being a better fit for him, and not just because I want him to play here.

KT on Sportscenter Special
Didn't say anything overly earth shattering.

A few notes:
(1) They are more likely to fill the outfield void via free agency rather than trades.

(2) Team is benefitting from a couple of really solid drafts (mentioned Headley & Antonelli), which allows them to spend some FA dollars.

(3) They won't be in on the "big money free agents", and doubts they will be for years due to the market size and playroll limitations. Looking forward to solid offensive contributions from the homegrown guys like Headley and Antonelli.

Big flippin' deal.
They are way more of a trainwreck right now than they were when we last saw them. I'm not the least bit concerned about them this year. At all. Period.

wow
those are really good at spending money.  Jones and Pierre in the outfield should be funny.
