Mark Prior signs with the Padres, is ours, bitches!

This is me being excited over the news that we got Prior. If Wolf and Prior stay healthy, then this is the best rotation in the NL. I'll say it right now. Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Greg Maddux, Randy Wolf, Mark Prior. That's sick.

It's either the best thing rear-end rotation ever, or Wolf and Prior both have shoulders that spectacularly explode on the mound and even that would probably be worth the signings just for the chance to see.

For now, my vote is for:

Holy crap!
We could have the BEST pitching staff in baseball if Prior and Wolf can be healthy. Even with the Dodgers getting Jones/Kuroda and the D-Backs getting Haren, this has GOT to make us the favorites to win the division. Contrary to popular belief, it was our fourth and fifth spots last year that killed us, not our offense.

I really, really wanted this.
If for nothing else, to give the Padres a solid starter for a season or two before his arm explodes. He is undoubtedly talented when he was able to stay healthy..... Let's hope a return to his hometown and to America's Finest City is just what he needs. One through five- this rotation could be downright nasty.

Well
I'm gonna contain my excitement.  I like the possibilities, but I just don't see any way Prior is gonna be healthy.  If he is, it will be a great surprise.

Think about it...
We've gotten some awesome innings out of some otherwise crappy pitchers recently. Whether it's Petco, the encouragement from GLB, or whatever, but I really think Prior could do pretty well for us. Dex, I'm with you.

Maybe I'm just excitable
Maybe it's the caffeine from my Diet Coke. This is (potentially) five aces. That's the best hand in poker.

by Dex on Dec 26, 2007 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

Yep
Greg Maddux could be our worst pitcher. How great of a problem is that to have?

by Phantom on Dec 26, 2007 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, No. It is, Indeed, Sick.
Your response is entirely appropriate and not caffeine-aided.

by Enzo Hernandez on Dec 26, 2007 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

If we can
somehow find ourselves a solid and reliable fourth OF that can also play CF, I think we're in solid shape heading into the season.

by Phantom on Dec 26, 2007 11:05 AM PST reply actions

Ha
Our DL is gonna be sick next season.

by jbox on Dec 26, 2007 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

Dude!
That is hilarious!! Can you imagine the DL we COULD'VE had next year if Bradley would've come back!

Prior, Wolf, Bradley, Edmonds. That's an All-Star DL right there!!

All jokes aside, I like the low risk singing. Could be a great mid-season shot in the arm for the entire team.

by friarfanatic on Dec 26, 2007 7:01 PM PST up reply actions

I like it
Mark Prior with a dead arm is better than Clay Hensley with a dead arm.

by jbox on Dec 26, 2007 11:10 AM PST reply actions

I'd take Mark Prior
with a dead arm over Hensley (we're no longer on first-name basis) with a live arm.

by TheThirdGonzalez on Dec 26, 2007 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

Prior's health....
It says he's been throwing on flat ground pain-free...is it possible to remove the mound at Petco just for his starts?

In all seriousness, I think this is a good signing for us. I just don't see much of a risk here. It's only a one-year deal. We don't know the dollars, yet...but I'm sure it's a small base salary loaded with incentives.

by Drama on Dec 26, 2007 11:10 AM PST reply actions

Update:
Buster Olney just updated his story.
Prior receives a one-year major league deal with $1 million base salary. The contract, which doesn't include an option, contains incentive clauses that could take the total value of the deal to over $3 million.

by Drama on Dec 26, 2007 11:14 AM PST reply actions

Exactly what I was hoping for.
Small money for a potentially big-time pitcher. If it works, fantastic, if it doesn't, its only one million wasted. Even if Prior implodes, at least we can say that this deal is not even close to Juan Pierre territory.

A freaking steal!
Even if Prior ends up league average (which is better than we got out of our fifth spot last year), he's worth the money. Carlos Silva just got $12 mil/year for the next four years to provide league average production. This is a huge move for us, and if he's healthy, this could be a HUGE signing. Again, Greg Maddux could be our worst starter by July.

Merry Christmas!
OK, then Happy Boxing Day?! Hey, it's all good. Small money commitment and a chance at (another) staff ace.

+2 Cleats of Pitching
Prior on the bench with Peavy, Maddux, and with the guidance of one, Doctor Darren Balsley, I think it's a good fit, and am excited, but reserved.
The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.

echoing cautious optimism

Is this better than signing a mediocre but healthy pitcher like Josh Towers?  Not sure. I guess I like that we are rolling the dice, but still this seems like a setup for a certain amount of psychic pain.

by Billy Almon on Dec 26, 2007 2:32 PM PST reply actions

No downside
I love this signing, a million with a bunch of incentives, you have Hensley, Cassel and (if worse-comes-to worse) Germano to fill in gaps that show up.  That does not even touch the farm system where Latos, Miller and LeBlanc can season for another year.  Also gives time for Carrillo to mend from TJ surgery.

Another great job by KT, the most underrated GM in baseball.

We may not score a bunch of runs, but I don't see this staff giving up a bunch either.

by Northcountycopper on Dec 26, 2007 2:56 PM PST reply actions

Not to nitpick
but I believe that Cassel is now an Astro.

Still a great move though.

flipping the bird
No, I think that's his way of waving goodbye to the Cubs and their terrific fans.

by Drama on Dec 26, 2007 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

Well......
We all know my thoughts on this. at least Josh Towers arm would be non-explosive. I remember when everyone was saying the same thing about Boomer last season. "If he stays healthy, we'll have a World Series rotation!" "Great low-risk move!" "I heard Boomer is on Atkins now!" And we all know how that worked out, and his shoulder was problem free.

BAH HUMBUG!

Mark Prior is: Nessie, Bigfoot, Sasquatch, a Yeti, a Unicorn and a Chupacabra that lives in Atlantis. He is the biggest Urban Legend on Earth.

by offspeedkills on Dec 26, 2007 8:31 PM PST reply actions

I suppose if KT
is cool with the risk, then he sees light at the end of the tunnel re Prior's shoulder.  Unless that light is a train....

I'm happy with the deal.

Sorry to Break it to You Padres Fans
LOL! All these poor naive Padres fans thinking how great their rotation will be with Mark Prior.  We thought that in Chicago too for the last four years.  He'll be back at 100% by May - OH YEAH, I've heard that one before!!!

So the Padres sign Prior, Barrett and Rusch?  If your GM thinks signing the Chicago Cubs rejects will get them to the world series then he REALLY REALLY needs to have his arm, shoulder and head examined.

by YouCanHavePriorSuckers on Dec 27, 2007 10:45 PM PST reply actions

Cause if theres one thing Cubs fans know
...it's how not to get to the World Series.

Oh, Doctor!
"Steve Garvey, who has been a hero tonight with three base hits and three RBIs, steps in...One ball, no strikes. One away. Five-five ball game...Padres have put ten hits on the board, the Cubs eight. Gwynn, taking his lead off first. The pitch on the way to Garvey. Hit high to right-center field! Way back! Going! Going! It is gone! The Padres win it!...In a game that absolutely defies description, Steve Garvey, in the ninth inning, hit one over the 370-mark, and the Padres beat the Cubs 7-5! Oh, doctor, you can hang a star on that baby!"

-- Jerry Coleman's call of Steve Garvey's game-winning homer in Game 4.

oh yeah....
because we are banking on Rusch & Prior to be our saviors....look at the contract we gave those guys...if they bust, so what...but if they pan out...thanks cubbies...we are looking at these guys and estes as our 5th starter at best. oh and Barrett...he wont be in a padres uni come opening day.
