Dudes, Robert Fick is back and he's ready to throw down

I didn't quite realize what the implications were in the comments this morning, but it just hit me... Robert Fick is back, kinda. I am so rooting for Fick to make the club. I loved the potential for him to seriously kill somebody for looking at Brian Giles wrong. I loved when he would roll in at catcher wearing the old school mask. I loved watching him pour beer on Jerry Coleman.

I love Robert Fick. Please, make the club.

Perhaps
My least favorite player of the last decade for the Padres, and that's saying a lot. I wish him the best of luck, but he was awful in a bunch of games where we could have used a clutch hit and, regardless of how good a clubhouse guy you are, on-field performance matters most and he was pretty bottom of the barrel for us.

You can't blame 2005 on that guy
There were a lot of times that Fick came through for us. Bochy is what put us there. Blame it on Bochy.

Sure you can
He and Mark Sweeney were out there getting tons of ABs when Nady was riding the pine. Even if it was Bochy's was call, you can still have bitterness towards the guy.

OK Fine
The reason we won the 2005 NL West Championship was because of Robert Fick.

In any case
He provided the most hilarity during the post game champagne celebrations by doing the following:
  • pouring a full bottle of Patron on Bochy's head (he wasn't wearing goggles so must have hurt like hell)
  • saying "goddamn it" when interviewed live by Weisbarth

A Flair for Celebration
The goggles Fick wore were a nice touch.  But pouring a bottle of tequila on your sober (i.e. no longer a drinker) manager was less than brilliant or tasteful, though he was probably just caught up in the moment and didn't think.  It was a getting-picked-off-of-first moment for a medicore player with a flair for celebration and a knack for performing better in interviews than on the field.  But if he makes the club it will allow Mud to prattle on about what a great clubhouse guy Ficky is.  I suppose that is worth something.

Agreed....
One of the best moments I witness on Padres TV.

With only one part of the Giles Bros. in tact, we need Fick to help keep the guys loose...I mean clubhouse chemistry counts for something...does this mean we;re trading Barrett for sure?

...and we're STILL waiting for MATT HOLLIDAY to touch the plate.

How many players, then....
will we over the age of 30?  Are we competing with the Geriatric Giants?

by TyBo on Dec 20, 2007 12:49 PM PST   0 recs

this kinda bothers me
Actually... I'm gonna write a post about this eventually, but the Padres currently have 8 players on the 40 man roster over the age of thirty and half of those guys are 31. I don't get where it came from that this is an "old" team. Our old old guys: Maddux, Hoffman, Brian Giles, Jim Edmonds. That's two Hall of Famers and a couple of multiple All-Stars.

Sorry to single you out, TyBo.

Old Player's Contract Status
Maddux - 1 year deal
Hoffman - Padres picked up last year option
Giles - Final year.  Padres option next year.
Edmonds - 1 year deal.

The Pads have done well locking up young good players and everyone else is on very short term deals.  Just remember the nightmare of a few years ago - Klesko, Nevin, Woody Williams, Chan Ho...

gotta bring
the tailgate video back that Fick is in.  IN the trailer with Nevin, Burroughs, Giles all drunk for the Charger game after getting eliminated from the playoffs in 05.  Fick is a funny guy, but doesnt add much else to the team.

Mark Prior
Buster Olney is reporting that the Padres appear to be the front-runner for Mark Prior. We could know his decision in the next 24 to 48 hours.
The Padres have offered a modest base salary plus a performance bonus package to Prior, according to sources, but other teams continue to talk with Prior, and other more aggressive offers could take shape. The former Cub pitcher lives in San Diego County, and in the end, he may opt to play for the team located closest to his home, in what figures to be a transitional year in his career.

I saw that...
seemed like more of the same ol', same ol' but not so much that my hopes didn't rise a little bit. I really think that with a little help from Buddy B and Bals, he could be a real weapon for us.

wow...
anyone who poured beer on jerry coleman and lived another day is a hero to me.....

I hate every Padre player
from the 2004 team.  No that's not true, but Fick reminds me too much of the complete frustration that, that season brought.

by jbox on Dec 26, 2007 12:04 PM PST   0 recs

Every team should have a red-head.
I know at least one person who will be thrilled to know Fick's in the organization again.  Me?  I always appreciated his willingness to play any position (not well, but he did play)....
