The Padres are only $2 million away from the salary cap. Wait, what?

Do the Padres have a payroll limit? Reading MLBTR today leads us to Rosenthal's speculation that Prior probably wants to come to San Diego. Sure. That makes sense. Closer to mom and dad when Prior's arm falls off and all that. What I don't get is this:

If the Padres, who are nearing their payroll limit, get significantly outbid, it will force him to make a decision.
and
The Padres' problem is that the Jim Edmonds trade increased their payroll to $73 million, $2 million below their limit.
Where's this limit coming from? How long have the Padres had a $75 million payroll limit? Did I totally miss something?

Like I always say
Ken Rosenthal doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.  He is a terrible source for information.

Agreed
Rosenthal just makes stuff up, i.e. "San Diego is still a possibility for Barry Bonds". I think most of his sources are the voices in his head. Son of Sam told him that the Padres are willing to trade Khalil Greene to the Nationals.
"Facts are meaningless. You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true!"

Great example
That piece he did a week or two with SD being a possibility for Bonds was a phenomenal example of the garbage he writes.  Can't find the article at the moment, but Rosenthal mentioned something about Jenkins being a potential SD target, Bonds' agent says "Look at Barry's numbers compared to Jenkins" and - PRESTO - suddenly SD is a possibility for Bonds.  It was absurd.

That crap wouldn't have gotten past a high school journalism teacher.

Rosenthal is also responsible
for the flap about A-Rod opting out during Game 4. He was the person that broke the news during the game, even though it had been put out there before the game started. I always thought it was weak of the media to criticize A-Rod for doing that when the media decided they HAD to report on it during Game 4.

Payroll....
The only evidence I've seen of the Padres mentioning any number in regards to a ceiling for the 2008 payroll was when KT told the U-T's Nick Canepa he expects it to be in the $70-plus million range.

As mandalay stated above, for them to be even in the ballpark they need to trade off Michael Barrett. I'm not sure how Rosenthal came to his $73 million dollar number...but we also have to remember bonuses as well.

No doubt
he'll come back to haunt us.

Seriously
That's one of my biggest fears about letting guys go like that. Of course, the FO typically does a good job of identifying those with talent (and those without).

If we didn't have Rosenthal
we wouldn't have anything to talk about for 6 months of the year.  God Bless that man.

Rosenthal....
Has an arrogant air about him, especially with that nasally voice. But hey, that's why we all love the Hot Stove league, the crazy rumors are half the fun.

As far as the "salary cap" We should all be happy that we can even be close to anything like a salary limit, we haven't spend money like this since....ever. I know if I was an owner, I'd be over the salary cap all the time, cuz I'd be trying to win. But if we don't have any money to sign Prior, then that's the way the cookie crumbles...I'd prefer Towers over noodle arm at this point.

...and we're STILL waiting for MATT HOLLIDAY to touch the plate.

Considering
The Padres spent about 70mil in 2006. They had planned to spend around that if not more last season until the market got ludicrous. I am guessing they ended up with a little surplus after last season, and although they might not take the payroll that high for a multi-year contract, I am sure they are less restricted for a one or two year contract.
