Godzilla vs. Fukudome

If the Padres were willing to pay $10,000,000 per year for Fukudome, would they pay a bit more for Godzilla?

December 15, Newark Star-Ledger
"A person who has spoken to Minnesota management and asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak for the team said the Yankees told the Twins they would get back into the Santana talks if they can shed the contract of left fielder Hideki Matsui. The San Francisco Giants had interest in Matsui -- who has two years and $26 million left on his contract but also a full no-trade clause -- but instead signed free-agent center fielder Aaron Rowand. Philadelphia and San Diego might still be looking for outfield help. "

I knew KT had a plan.
Gilly, Edmonds, Godzilla...now that is an outfield.  Who would we have to give up?

I dont see any correlation with those two names but thank you :)

keep dreaming
Giants were about to trade Lincecum or Cain for Matsui.  So what do we have to give up that is at that talent level... Chris Young?  Besides... Hideki makes $26 mil over the next 2 years.  Sounds too rich for Alderson's blood.  Keep dreaming...

by 19 51 on Dec 17, 2007 1:10 PM PST   0 recs

Wrong...
Noah Lowry was the one rumored to be involved in a deal for Matsui. NOT Cain or Lincecum. You're thinking of the rumored deal for Alex Rios.

by Drama on Dec 17, 2007 1:50 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

I was so happy when I heard about that rumor
too bad is hasn't happened yet.(the Cain/Lincecum for Rios)

Now that they got Rowand.

It was a good dream
while it lasted, though, wasn't it?

by Demoira on Dec 26, 2007 9:53 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

My fault
Doesn't really matter though... Lowry is on par with Lincecum and Cain.  Shoot, Lowry was SF's best pitcher last year.  Regardless... gonna have to give up a lot to get Matsui most likely.

by 19 51 on Dec 18, 2007 7:46 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Sort of...
Lowry actually is nowhere near on par with Cain or Lincecum. Record-wise he might have been SF's best pitcher last year but that's because Cain had the worst run/bullpen support imaginable and Lincecum was a rookie and went through some rough patches. Talent-wise, Lowry is nowhere near Cain or Lincecum.

by ExPadtriate on Dec 18, 2007 9:35 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

yeah
I'd say to scouts Cain and Lincecum are much more "attractive" from the electric stuff they have and because of their upside.  I would say Lowry's "stuff" is nowhere near par with Cain or Lincecum, but that isn't everything.  Lowry has been consistent and is a very smart pitcher.  As of now, I'd say Lowry up there with Cain and Lincecum, but Cain and Lincecum can blow Lowry out of the water if they live up to their potential and stay consistent.

Lowry
Has also been incredibly lucky.

by CurbEnthusiasm on Dec 18, 2007 6:23 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

The only way I see this happening...
is if the Yankees include $ in the deal. Of course you would have to give up some combination of Young/Bell/Germano and some prospect. That's too much for 2 years of an aging corner OF'er with recent arm problems.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Dec 17, 2007 2:33 PM PST   0 recs

Unless ....
Unless the Yankees really want to make sure Santana does not sign with the Red Sox.  Maybe the Yankess are really motivated to clear salary and the Padres wouldn't have to give up the farm.  Yankees pay $3,000,000 of his salary and we're down to Fukudome numbers.

Spread the rumor.

by Enzo Hernandez on Dec 18, 2007 4:55 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Besides,
I can't imagine Matsui's game being particularly effective in Petco- on either side of the ball.

by TheThirdGonzalez on Dec 17, 2007 5:09 PM PST   0 recs

Dude ...
His .371 MLB OBP would love cavernous Petco.  Plus, Godzilla doesn't hit dinky NL Central homers.  He annihilates balls, knocking them out of parks and toppling buildings.

by Enzo Hernandez on Dec 18, 2007 4:58 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

also
he could definitely play LF since he frequently plays CF for the Yanks.  I would love to see him but I dont know about what it would cost us...

Headley/Bell/(another pitcher)

by frequentfriar on Dec 24, 2007 3:31 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

not worth it
Bell or Headley alone would be worth more than two expensive years of Matsui. Also he has played CF for the Yankees but not since 2005/his wrist injury.

Obviously I'd rather see him out there than Shrek on a regular basis, but I just can't imagine any scenario bringing Matsui here that would be good for the Padres.
