Tad Iguchi Is a Padre

1 year deal, pending a physical.

Just got back home from the Season Ticket Holder event, and KT announced this right after he told us all that Fukodome wasn't coming here.

Plan is for him to be a 1 year stopgap to get Antonelli some more ABs in the minors.  But, it was also discussed that Antonelli might get some looks in CF based on his athleticism and speed.

More moves to come I am sure....

good deal
Even though I really like Anto this is the smart thing to do. Iguchi is very solid

I think
this is great news. We weren't the front runners to get this guy. Huge upgrade from last season. One more hole filled. Move on to the next move. Lets go Padres.

I like this deal.
Leave Antonelli alone...let the kid play some Triple A second base and get ready for some time with the big club at the end of 2008. I think this CF talk is total bullsh*t and a bad idea all around.

agreed
He does not need another position change

The funny part is
the people who follow the Padres very casually are going "YES!!!  We got that guy from Japan!!!"

TTG
that has a ring to it.

I feel like myself again.
T4G never would've worked. I, and everyone else, had gotten used to TTG, plus I have an affinity for being the third as I'm the third bearer of my name.

Foucault was a Padres fan
At least I think that's what "Discipline and Punish" was about.

Good Move
Tad is solid.....I'd laugh at all the people stressing out over finals....if I wasn't going to be joining you guys in the spring. At least the Padres will be back!
...and we're STILL waiting for MATT HOLLIDAY to touch the plate.

Our first off-season upgrade!
That's gotta be worth something.

by goose1 on Dec 11, 2007 9:48 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This takes some of the sting out
I thought Kosuke would have been a nice addition, but comparatively I still thought we were weaker at 2B than in LF/CF. Picking up a guy like Iguchi is a quality improvement. Try to work either Headley or Kouz into LF, work Hairston in when the matchup's right, pay Aaron Rowand a little more than he's worth to secure his services, and you've got your opening day lineup.

P.S. Padres, Michael Barrett to the Pirates for Nyjer Morgan. Make it happen.

Nyjer Morgan
killed us last season...id love to have him!

I don't understand... ?
is NYCPadre snoozing coz its late on that coast or just bored already!

I LIKE this deal.  Tadahito is a hustler.
Did anybody seriously think we were going to compete with the Cubs in this market; with our background?

by ABY on Dec 12, 2007 12:49 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

yeah yeah
It's a solid signing and a definite upgrade.  I think I was still pouting.  We still got a little ways to go, but yes, this is a good thing.

i woke up expecting to hear news about fuku
but this will make my day that we got tady boy. huge upgrade at second base! although almost anything would be an upgrade from marcus and blum....

Most of your 40 man roster...
are 1-2 year stopgap players. I've lived in San Diego for 13 years now, and all I can remember hearing from your front office is the same three things..."San Diego Discount"..."We're a  Small Market and can't afford to get the big Free Agents"..."We think we can compete in our division this year". Your owner cares more about feeling sorry for himself and reaping the HUGE profits from the PETCO/Downtown Real Estate Cash Cow than winning.

My sorry-ass Cubs have sucked for so long now, I'm plesantly surprised that our GM not only talks about wanting to win...he actually has gone out and spent the money to get some players. Sandy Alderson/John Moores will keep your team just bad enough to not make it far into the Post-Season, and just good enough to keep the Season Ticket Holders thinking you have a chance. That is what the Tribune Corp. has done for the better part of the last 2 decades with the Cubs. It's a good scheme to make money, but a terrible one at winning baseball games.

The End.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Dec 12, 2007 9:57 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

true, true
but they are still the cubs. And the cubs spending money during the offseason is like winning a gold medal at the special olympics....

Didn't Jake Peavy and Chris Young....
win a silver last year in the "David Wells 4x400 Relay"?

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Dec 12, 2007 10:07 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Right
Because the Cubs spending lots of money and sucking is a better option.

by osbug on Dec 12, 2007 10:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait just a minute buddy...
We WON OUR DIVISION last year just like you guys did TWO YEARS IN A ROW. And then we got bitch-slapped out of the playoffs in the first round.....just like you guys. Yeah, we're just two squirrels trying to get the same nut.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

The difference being
that you spent 150% of our payroll to do it. The point being that spending money isn't the key to winning (see Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, Orioles), spending money wisely is (see Red Sox, Twins, Angels, Padres, Rockies, Diamondbacks...).

by osbug on Dec 12, 2007 10:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I can't believe this argument still exists
Baseball GM 101:

How To Lose 100 Games as a Small Market Team:
-during free agency, attempt to outbid teams with triple your payroll
-land the occasional long burdensome contract when you win
-allow 1 or 2 of those contracts to cripple you for years either:
       a. because the player gets injured
       b. because the player declines
       c. because you still have to field 38 more
players with 12 dollars at your disposal

The money you spend only does anything if you spend it in a smart, focused way.  You shouldn't, for example, give 45 million to Juan Pierre (though I'm glad the Dodgers did, as a Padre fan).

by goose1 on Dec 12, 2007 10:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually think
Headley will be starting at 3b, and Kouz will go to LF where he belongs.  I have no idea who is going to play CF, at all. Bradley would have been a nice option at $6M a year, but who knows about his knee.  Steve Finely is terrible now, not his fault, he just got old.

The good news is I got to fork over a whole bunch of money for my season tickets and a EXHIBITION GAME! Yeah. And as a special bonus along with the parking pass, I get to play one-inning in CF.  I think I am going to where my son in the baby bjorn, it may cut down on my range, but I don't think any batters will try to hit it to me.

Headly
Will be playing 3B for the Pirates next year.

As long
as Jason Bay is kicking butt in our outfield, that would be nice.
