October baseball: Who's sticking around?

We only played one game in October this year...which is too bad.  But I have to say upfront that I was always iffy about our chances against that Phillies team.

I was pleased to find today that I was noticeably less upset than yesterday.  True, I had a horrifying dream where Peavy gave up a Glavine-Jason Jennings like 10 runs in the 1st inning of a game.  But I digress...

I think I'll try to enjoy some baseball just as baseball for the next couple weeks.  And I'll enjoy not feeling like I'm going to throw up the entire game, and being able to go to bed content no matter what happens.

What do we do, as Padre fans?

First: We root for Arizona to get swept. Let the Cubs win a series for once.  I can't really stand either team, but at this point I hate Arizona more because their fans, broadcasters, and Eric Byrnes are just really smug.

Second: We root for the Rockies to win, I think.  As much as it hurts to lose to Cinderella...you at least have to hope Cinderella gets to the ball. Otherwise you look bad. Or turn into a pumpkin. I forget the story. Anyway, Rockies over Phillies.

Third: I don't really care about the American League. But I'll watch.

Last, we all continue to show up and post at GLB. That means you, whoever you are.

Rockies
I've never had truly ill feelings towards the Rockies or their fans, but I'll say that it's hard for me to root for them since they're members of the Never Won a World Series Club, and I'd rather the Padres be the next member of that club to get the boot.

I don't want the Rocks to win the WS
just to clarify.

I want them to get there. And then lose in 4 games to the Yankees.  Then they'll know how it feels, too.

Totally agree about the 'World Series' club.  Although at this point does it even count that the Cubs have won? I think they should be re-enrolled on the Padre/Rockie side of the divide.

I can live with those scenarios
In the AL, I will root for the Indians and Angels. Which probably means I will be bummed again at some point!! But hey, I am kinda getting used to that feeling :-)

Indians
I am rooting for them, because of the whole 1996 ALCS screw job by the umpires.  Plus they lost to the Marlins when they went out and bought a world championship.

I hate the D-bags.  How come noone makes a big deal about the fact MLB paid for their fist World Championship?  For those who don't know the story, let me give you the 2 cent version.

D-bags owner, who is all buddy buddy with Bud Selig, went out and spent a whole bunch of money and brough in Johnson, Schilling, Grace, Matt Williams, Stotellmeyer, etc.  Very large contracts with a lot of deferred money.  After they win the WS, they start to fall apart a little.  The next year the attendance falls to a very low rate, and the D-Bags can't pay their bills.  This goes on for like two more years, and the owner is almost forced into bankruptcy.  Bud Selig, trying to avoid the embarrassement of a new franchise, with a brand new ball park paid for the taxpayers (100%, not this strange bond deal with revenue sharing that the Padres are in), from going bankrupt decides to have MLB assume the dept and have the Zona's revenue sharing portion go to pay back MLB at no interest.

Of course the D-bags did not learn there lesson and once they got out of that whole are still doing deficit spending with the likes of still paying Ortiz, Green, Vazques and Johnnson.

I only root for teams to lose
After we're out of it.  So I'll root for AZ to get swept and then for the Cubs to lose in 7 in 23 innings to either the Phillies or the Rox.

I didn't even know there was an American League.  Thanks for the information.

Anaheim
but when the owner completely insults a city and changes the name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anheim-I think Karma should prevail.

one of the reason I am rooting for the Indians, is that one of my coworker, who is an albino Navajo,  when he was young growing up on the reservation believed that the Indians was the Native American's team.  He was like "hey we didn't have tv, and reading the paper I was like, cool we have OUR OWN TEAM." -while it is sad and a little retarded, you kinda of feel it in your heart.

It's smart business
There's no insult in it. The name change had everything to do with extra revenue.

Ask Angels fans if they'd rather have a bigger payroll or be referred to solely as Anaheim.

I'm pretty sure we all know the answer to that one.

by Phantom on Oct 3, 2007 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bigger payroll
I prefer the old name,"California Angels".

I wonder if the Padres would get a bigger payroll if there was name change.

I would go with "Far From Los Angeles, San Diego Padres". Ooooooh yeeeaaaah.

Rox v Angels
WS is what I'm pulling for. I have no ill-will towards the Rockies. They seem to be farily aware that McClellan punched their playoff ticket, and they're not being arrogant about the win.

I live in Dodgers country, so naturally, I'll root for the Angels. Nothing gets Dodger fans more riled up than Angels success.

by Phantom on Oct 3, 2007 12:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take Angels over the Red Sox
to spite the Dodgers, true.

But mostly because I can't stand the Red Sox whole "Yankees are the Evil Empire" posturing.  Yes! Your team has slightly less payroll than the Yankees! You can BARELY afford to sign major talent or pay the Padres entire payroll just to TALK TO a Japanese pitcher!

The entire point of Red Sox fandom was suffering, futility and pain.  Now that that's over, what's left?

Rox up 3-0 on Phils in 2nd inning
And, no, Holliday still hasn't touched the plate...

by Winfield's Ghost on Oct 3, 2007 12:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would be mildly amused
if his first AB at Petco next year, he looks at the dugout and gingerly taps the plate.

Like I said, the Rockies KNOW they got away with one there. At least they seem to realize that game could have gone either way, and they're not being arrogant dicks about it.

Angels
I'm a closet Angels liker. I can't say "fan" because I'm not fantatical about them, but I do like them. They are my AL team, so I'm pulling for them to go all the way.

I completely understand the take on the AZ-Cubs series. But I just can't pull for the Cubs. The ENTIRE world will be pulling for them, like they did in 2003, so that is enough reason for me to pull against them, like I did in 2003. Just being losers for 100 years isn't enough to get my sympathy. Go NL West.

Pulling for the Yanks to win their first series so the Angels have homefield in the ALCS.

Pulling for Colorado to be the NL rep in the World Series.

I wouldn't mind
a WS consisting of anyone besides the D-Bags and anyone but the Yankees, although the sole reason I could have for wanting Boston in the WS is to see Alex Cora come up huge in a ninth inning twenty-seven pitch pinch-hit at-bat.

by TheThirdGonzalez on Oct 3, 2007 1:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Much like sdgaucho
I'm a casual Angels fan.  Used to dislike them, but since I now live in LA (and am genetically incapable of rooting for the Dodgers), I've sort of adopted them as my AL team.  But I'm nowhere NEAR as fanatical about them as I am the Padres.  I don't hang on every game, but I like to see them playing well.  And since they are the AL rivals of the Dodgers, then it's only natural I would have an affinity towards them.

But still, I wouldn't be upset if the Indians won, either.  Cleveland is a city that could use a boost.

The Red Sox and Yankees?  Kinda indifferent about the Sox, and the Yanks are the only AL team I DON'T want to see go to the WS.  I am a Yankee-hater.

In the NL, the only team I'm vociferously rooting against is the D-backs.  F*ck them.  I still don't believe they're as good as they think they are.  They're just lucky, and as someone else pointed out: smug.  Hope the Cubs sweep them out of the contest really quick-like.  I'm a minor Cubbies fan anyway, and despite the Lee/Young fracas, I'd definitely like to see them advance.

I used to not mind the Phillies until this year, what with the dirty hard slide into Marcus and Brett Myers acting like a little bee-atch.  Plus their fans are pretty obnoxious.  I'm totally rooting for the Rox to make short work of them.

I think in the end I would like to see an Angels-Rox World Series, but hope the Angels win it.  The Rox advancing that far would make me feel better about us losing to them (it would validate that they were, in fact, THAT GOOD.)  But they shouldn't win it all because it would be wrong for the Rox to get a WS ring before the Pads.

So, in conclusion: Go Angels!

Something wierd
has happened to me in the past two years. I used to loathe and detest the Yankees. Absolutely hated them, thought they were terrible for baseball.

At some point, most of my animosity started shifting toward the Sox. I can't say why exactly, but after going to Yankee Stadium this year and having solid discussions with most of the New Yorkers around me, I started to like them.

The Daisuke Matsuzaka bid and their inflated payroll kind of makes me uber-skeptical about their "woe is us. Teh Big Bad NY is teh devil!"

So while I would like to see the Indians advance, NY advancing wouldn't crush me.

Although I don't think they deserve to have A-Rod. Poor guy can't catch a freakin break.

by Phantom on Oct 3, 2007 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's funny....
my dad (Padres-fan and season-ticket holder) took a trip back east this season and went to games in Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York (both Mets and Yankees).  He used to semi-root for the Sox, and was a Yankee-hater like me.  BUT...since his trip, he's switched allegiances because of the fans.  He said that the Sox fans were the most loud, obnoxious drunken bunch of a-holes he's ever been around, while the Yankees fans came off as pretty decent folk.

Having not experienced this, I still find it tough to make the switch, but he's almost got me sold, and now Phantom is making me re-think my position.

by Mr Meadows on Oct 3, 2007 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trust me
I was totally surprised. We were wearing our navy HOF shirts that we got at the induction. Almost everyone around us asked us if we went. We told them about our trip and that we were huge Padres fans, and they were all very cordial. Had nothing but nice things to say.

The one guy sitting behind me that I talked to the most said he had never heard the place louder than when Tino Martinez crushed that ball off Langston after the questionnable pitch. I was just impressed that he actually remembered the situation.

Winfield's Ghost is right
I am a total Angels fan still. I gave this whole season to the Padres, went to a dozen games, caught 3 balls, cried on Monday night, and made a Matt Holliday voodoo doll.

So I'm sad about the Padres, but my Angels are in and we get a chance for redemption against Boston who whipped us in '86 and '04.

Go Angels!

Angels Lover
See how he references the two teams?

"The" Padres and "My" Angels, as if the Padres are some sort of inanimate object and the Angels are what his dreams are made of.  Tells us all we need to know about you, RBS!!!

by Winfield's Ghost on Oct 3, 2007 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Angel Lover indeed
I'm right there with you.

Growing up in LA, my brothers were all Dodger fans and I rooted for the "California Angels" and anyone playing AGAINST the Dodgers. Yeah, it was rough.

I actually didn't start following the Padres until 1981 right after boot camp. I became a diehard fan in'84, yeah I jumped on the bandwagon.

So, I'd like to the Rox and Angels, with the Angels sweeping in 4.

Use the sig all you like. Everyone should. I'm using it until Tim McClellan admits he was wrong or until Matt Holliday admits he never touched the plate or when I get bored with it.

Matt Holliday never touched the plate and Tim McClellan knows it.

Piniella pulled Zambrano after 6
Even though he'd only thrown 85 pitches and was dealing.  I think he was trying to 'save' him for the next start on short rest.  I don't get this--why put yourself in a worse position to win today so that you can win 3 days from now?

Rockies were solid.  I couldn't watch much, though--kept thinking that's where our boys should be.

Angels-Red Sox was sort of insane, Beckett's dominance.

Zambrano and Peavy
On the broadcast last night, they said that because Zambrano hadn't faced the D-backs much, he watched tape of Peavy facing the D-backs to prepare.

It kind of made me root for, if not the Cubs, then for Zambrano in that start.
