Curse of Castilla

Curse of Castilla:

Since Castilla's release, Padres third basemen have hit .182 (25-for-137) with two homers and eight RBI and made 10 errors.

I'm not saying I want Vinny back, because we've all seen his stats, but seriously can we get a real third basemen now?

This experiment where we platoon 4 guys who suck isn't working.

You should be saying you want Castilla back
Too bad the Rocks have Castilla.  Castilla's replacements already have more errors than Castilla had while he was here.  Castilla was playing outstanding defense.  Castilla's replacements have not come close to his offensive production, meager as it was.

Well
if it was a choice between Castilla and this group then yes it was better to have Castilla.  They shouldn't have released Castilla until they knew they had somebody that could fill his position.  Could they have sent him down for a bit to see if Walker was going to work out?  I was all for getting rid of Castilla thinking that they'd sign a real 3rd basemen, but they didn't.

I have to disagree.
While our third basemen haven't hit well since we cut Vinny, there was at least the chance that they would hit better than Castilla.  On the year, Walker, Blum and Bellhorn have all hit better than Castilla.  In fact, Walker's wOBA in 67 PA since becoming a Padre is second on the team behind Josh Bard.  The difference between .382 and .262 is about 7 runs over 67 PA.

I blame you Richard
for planting the seed in Aldersons head at the pizza feed.  He never would have thought to trade Vinny if it wasnt for you. Why Richard?  Why???

I think Aldreson
and KT subscribe to Richard's newsletter :)

Russell Branyan
Last night, he passed Castilla in Runs Above Replacement.  Took him 263 fewer PA.
