Open Thread 4/5: Padres vs Gigantes

Light posting today as I'm still in the middle of finals and jbox is travelling. We try it again tonight with Estes vs Morris.

I'd really like a win tonight just so that we can start the season off with a quick series win.

I have to study tonight for a final tomorrow, but I'll be online if anybody wants to chat. Starting tomorrow, we'll get you back to your regularly scheduled posts.

Update [2006-4-5 22:25:34 by Dex]: Jbox must not have seen that I already posted an Open Thread, but he wanted you to see this:

I'll be there
So no chatting for me this time (I am trying to hang out here when I am not at the games this season). I will be freezing and braving the threat of showers in my totally uncovered seats!

Hopefully.
A-Gon taking his game to the next level is the best possible resolution to the first base situation.

Whats with
Matt Morris?  Why did he just walk Estes?  It seems he's been going full count on everyone.  Barfield got an nice almost hit.....

by slodown4me on Apr 5, 2006 7:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe he's starting to lose it?
He's been jamming them so far, so maybe he's starting to miss?

Nice catch by Giles. He so good.

Another thing.....
How do you make a throwing error from 2nd base?  In the Major LEagues?  I'm not watching the game, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing this is just a rookie thing?

by slodown4me on Apr 5, 2006 7:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Barfield playing in the shift
So he was a little ways into right field as opposed to his regular spot.

Rookie thing, I hope.

This game is not unlike a duel
I expected as much from Morris (kinda), but I'm very pleased with Estes' performance.

ESTES
GOD. He could've got the guy at home EASY.

Instead, he eats the ball and can't get anything.

Ah well
Can't win them all. Estes played them tough except for that crazy meltdown. Morris is the good. A-Go is the awesome.

We'll get them next time.

by Dex on Apr 5, 2006 9:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sure
I mean, it's not all his fault, but I'm just talking about the fact that all of a sudden, nothing went right for Estes.

You had the bad luck skate save and the walk to load the bases. Then that one infield single that really should have been scored, "Ball eaten" as Estes maybe didn't get a grip on it, but more looked like he just kinda froze. Then he walked in the next run.

It wasn't a very big meltdown, but it was not a very fortunate series of events.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the way they
played...in terms of good defense (minus the silly throwing error), decent pitching, some good hits by the folks we are pulling for, i.e. barfield and a-go.

It's too early in the season to start bashing guys like we did last year on Nevin for being unclutch.

However, when I start seeing bases loaded 1 out strand sessions, or runner on second, no out, and fail to advance him kind of stuff, THEN, I will start getting irritated.

Best of all, no BONDS homers.  I like how Estes, knowing he wasn't going to pitch to him, gave him the close heat a few times (even hit him, everybody cheered, LOVE IT)

All I know is.....
Klesko is slowely but surely losing his job....  It might actually be better for him to get his surgery now so maybe he can have a fresh start on a new team next year....

Knees
Why won't they throw at his knees?  Damnit.

by Richard Wade on Apr 6, 2006 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever will end his run at
Babe and Henry Aaron's mark.  A Peavy fastball to the knees would def do the trick.
