Latest happenings

Just when things seemed to get quiet.

  • Marcus is a done deal. One year contract with a club option on the second year. It's all about the G-Men in San Diego.

  • From the same article as above, Wells canceled on a dinner with the KT last night. No sign as to how close that may or may not be.

  • Padres avoid the backlash and bad karma by not doing anything with Jayson Werth and allowing him to go to the Phillies
  • .
  • Update bullet... Klesko has signed with San Francisco. Hey Giants Fan, been there. Done that. Northern Californians are such biters.
Things are starting to shake down a little bit. I'm thinking one more "big" acquisition before the season starts (Wells?). If we see two more, I'll be ecstatic.

Come on Boomer
Realistically, nobody is going to give him a better $$ deal than the Padres.  So what if it is incentive-based, we can commit $2m and then add the incentives on top based on IP or GS.  Who is going to turn down $2m to play baseball and live the life of a major leaguer?  Not many people, even 43-yo major leaguers with 20 years experience will probably jump at that.

It's worth mentioning that PETCO is only 20min away from the People's Republic of Ocean Beach!

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Boomer...
David Wells WILL be in a Padre uniform in 2007. Usually I agree with TheRevRun, but not this time. I think the Giants and D-Backs will throw a bit more money at him than the Padres will offer...BUT...it would have to be significantly more than what the Padres are putting on the table.
The 2007 will be Boomer's last and he knows San Diego is the perfect place for him.  He's not going to move to Arizona and sweat his fat ass off for 7 months for a team that won't win the division. He's definitely not going to sign with the Giants and play alongside his buddy, Barry Bonds for a team praying not to finish in dead last.
Wells is just trying to squeeze the Padres for a little more cash in his last contract. He's playing it smart.

Money and Boomer
Drama makes a good point as usual.  I gotta say though, that I think the Giants and D-Backs are just attempting to drive the price up on KT, with neither team realistically wanting Boomer on their squad.

Maybe if Boomer had been a little more fan friendly and little less controversial in his career he'd get that $6m contract so we could all go buy Wells jerseys.  Unfortunately he doesn't bring that "fan favorite" cheer like we all had for Vinnnie last year.  Because of that, I think the Pads need to protect themselves in the event he only makes 1-10 starts next season by producing a contract based on incentives.  To be fair the only incentives should be based on innings pitched or games started and NOT on the performance in those games.  If he pitches good enough to stay in the rotation - and stays healthy - and makes 30+ starts I think $6m is fair for what he brings (even if he goes 12-16, 4.45era).  If he makes under a dozen starts than that would be a waste of $6m (see Park, Klesko, circa 2006).

I know Boomer said he is against incentive based contracts but come on.  Maddux did it.  Matsuzaka did it.  All the other guys are doing it.

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

TheRevRun...
It's very possible that the Giants and D-Backs are trying drive up the price on KT.  I can understand that.

When Wells agrees to his new deal with the Padres...I think we'll all be pretty happy with the numbers.  KT and Sandy have proven themselves to be tough negotiators recently. They didn't back down to Boras when he was insisting on a guaranteed two-year deal for Maddux. They didn't give anything up to the Braves for Giles. The deal that they eventually signed Marcus to is only a one-year with a club option.

They've proven that if they don't think the numbers are right...they'll walk.

Aquisitions
Hopefully that aquisition is a left fielder. I really hope that the club doesn't start sledge in left. Perhaps we could swing a deal for someone like alex rios?

Alex Rios...
Alex Rios in LF would be pretty sweet. Unfortunately the BlueJays are looking for starting pitching...we don't really have any that we can afford to lose.

lol..
Bad zebra.... lol.  Now that I think about it, the Marcus Giles situation couldn't have worked out any better for the Padres.  To repeat a point made earlier, they got him at a blue-light price with little risk and best of all the Padres didn't have to give up anything.  Did KT figure this out or was it just fate?

MGilly
I suspect that Towers had a feeling something like that might happen. Things got really quiet regarding Marcus for a long time and the Padres seemed to showing off how many other options they had. I credit Towers.

the Padres could not have made a better deal than they got with Marcus for all the reasons you mentioned.  way to go Front Office!

Finally a little bit of good news
to ease some of the hurt or Barfield's & Robert's departure.  I've been wanting M.Giles to be a Padre for a while.  I think it'll be cool having brothers on the team.  I just hope he can pick up his numbers.  So how do we cheer for him now.  We can't say Go Giles!  because that would be confusing.

This is such wonderful news...
Early Christmas present...Klesko is finally gone. I'd like to sit here and write the $10 million reasons it made me physically ill to see him in a Padre uniform the last couple of seasons...but screw it. I just feel relief.

Was he offered arbitration? do we get draft picks?

by S4ilorguy on Dec 19, 2006 1:55 PM PST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure he was.
Kinda like the Woody thing. We're gonna offer it but your not going to accept. I don't know if he was a class A or B free agent though. Have to look that one up.

by jburtrum1 on Dec 19, 2006 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

Klesko....
Klesko was offered arbitration with the agreement that he would decline. He was a Type B free agent.

yes he was offered arbitration
Not sure if he was considered a "type A" or "type B" free agent.  An "A" would get us two compensation picks with one coming from SF and one sandwich pick.  A "B" would be only a sandwich pick but still pretty good.  DR and WW were both "type A"

Side note to this...
This is what one of the guys on Rotoworld.com wrote about the agreements the Padres had made with some players to offer them arbitration knowing they would decline:

MLB needs to do something about this, if not now then at least before next year. Since the signing teams no longer surrender compensation for Type B free agents, the player has nothing to lose and the team everything to gain by making a side deal like this. However, it's unfair to every other team in baseball. A situation has been created in which Type B free agents can be more valuable to the team that loses them and more attractive to other teams than Type A free agents, and the ridiculous Elias system that determines where a free agent falls is still as broken as ever.

I'm just happy that we have a GM and a CEO that are bright enough to work the system to our advantage.  We now have SIX extra draft picks before the 4th round of the June draft. We could pick up another for Chan Ho. If Wells goes out of his mind and signs with another club...we'd get another for one for him as well.  We're finally building a legit minor league system.

minor league system
Gotta use those picks to our advantage though. As far as anyone's really concerned, extra picks in the MLB draft are like bonus spins at the roulette table. They're nice, but nothing's guaranteed.

by Dex on Dec 19, 2006 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

only history can be the judge
I am willing to bet that Grady Fuson and the scouting department can pick one or two guys that perform at the show from those six extra picks.  For fun, I will go ahead and track those picks over the next few years.

Favorite Klesko Commercial
It was very short lived but it was for a furniture store (Beach Sleep?).  A woman is walking around the store looking for just the right piece when she stops by an armoire.  As the doors of the armoire open, Ryan Klesko's head pops out.  The stunned, yet excited woman exclaims, "Hey! You're Ryan Klesko!" as he proceeds to extoll the virtues of said store.

The image of Klesko all squished up in that thing brings a smile to my face.  I like to imagine the production meeting, when they explained, "No really, you're going to be all balled up in the the cabinet when the doors open.  The fans will love it!" And there's Klesko, stroking his soulpatch, nodding his head, having his "I'm Keith Hernandez" moment.

I imagine for months after the commercial airs Nevin and Hoffman putting armoires in front of Klesko's locker, lying in wait, giggling.  Bochy shaking his head disapprovingly, hands on hips, yet finds a smile and chuckles, "You guys..."

In a just world, this is all a DVD Bonus Feature in the 2001 Padre Team Highlight Video.

Thanks for the memories, Ryno.
