Tim Kurkjian's take on Phil Nevin's role with the Rangers...

"Rangers DH Phil Nevin, who makes $10M, hired a nutritionist in the offseason and reported to a winter hitting session in Texas in great shape.  The Rangers think he still has good bat speed and can return to form."

First of all, was Phil ever that good to deserve $10M a year?  He was a solid, solid player for a few years there, but it seems like the Pad's way overpayed for a one-tool player like Phil and let's be honest, when do the Padres ever overpay their players?

It's good to see Phil turning his career and attitude.  I know I'll be pulling for him this season.  The DH should do him some good even though I'm sure he'd never admit it.

Of all athletes
Baseball players seem to take their conditioning and training the least seriously.  You'd think at this point that every ball player would have a nutritionist and a trainer.  It's a shame he wasn't working this hard when the Pads had him.  Was he content getting his 10 million and popping up to the catcher?  I guess so.

Phil Nevin
Don't forget that Phil (and Klesko) literally carried the team for a good three or four years there after the World Series season. Whether or not that deserved the kinds of contracts they got is another thing, but it's not like they didn't do anything to deserve them.
