Open Thread, 5/9: Padres vs Reds

Jake Peavy (2-0, 2.32) vs Aaron Harang (1-2, 3.96)

4:10 PM start

Khalil is expected to return today and we may get to see Tim Stauffer sometime this week. Probably in relief to begin with, but then quickly into that fifth spot since we need a new lamb to sacrifice to the Curse.

Bochy's master plan should work out just right as the Padres face the Reds with Peavy today. We didn't want to completely destroy the Cardinals as they have to face the Dodgers for four. This way, we take 3 of the 4 games in St. Louis, and we let the Cardinals feel like they're rolling on offense to start the Dodgers series. A Cardinals sweep now puts our boys in a great position.

Also... Happy Birthday, Tony Gwynn!

Ted and Flan making fun of the Enquirer
Actually, the Nation Enquirer prides themselves on their investigative reporting. When was the last time a lawsuit was brought against them or any information was disputed? It doesn't happen, because their stories are very well researched with very good secret sources.

Reds strike first
Reds get a run early on Peavy.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 4:28 PM PDT reply actions

Reds put four runs up early on Jake
Well then. This isn't such a good start, is it....

I'm going to go take the bus home and hopefully, when I get there, Jake Peavy will have regained control of his body, because I think aliens might have gotten him.

wow
Peavy getting touched up bad.

Well I'm home now...
Top of the 5th. 5-1 Reds. Khalil is up with a runner in scoring position. We're totally still in this game.

Hey now
Loretta on second with the error. One run at a time boys.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 5:44 PM PDT reply actions

oh dude
Grant just broke out the shalaylee. This game's ours.

Hmmm...
Can somebody kiss Anna Kournikova again? I don't like runners getting left on when the other pitcher is starting to lose it.

These games...
Why aren't the Padres winning these kinds of games? I don't understand.

Mother's Day
Yesterday, for Mother's Day, I cooked up food on the grill for the little party we had at my in-laws place. The menu: BBQ chicken, BBQ lamb, BBQ spam.

It was a Chickespamalamba. I was feeling it a little bit today.

Maybe the Padres had chickespamalambas yesterday also. That's my only explanation for this game.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

OK...
The Padres have 6 outs left to get at least 4 runs. By my calculation, they need to score soon.

Mark Sweeney... Be my hero.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 6:23 PM PDT reply actions

Sweeney... a base on balls
If there's one thing Sweeney demonstrated there... It's that having balls will get you on base.

You gotta have balls.

Roberts grounded into a double play...
Maybe he is overrated. Harang looks like a monster. Look at his cocky swagger. I wish we had that tonight.

Mother's Day part 2
Yesterday, along with the Chickespamalamba, my wife baked a mushroom and artichoke quiche thing. She also did a ton of other stuff along with her cousin Sara, but I'm having a piece of the leftover bake right now.

I just want to use this forum to say... It's absolutely delightful.

Zzzzzzzzz.....
...Huh? wuzzat? Dang... Klesko homerun...

Wake up, everybody! Padres are still in it!

by Dex on May 9, 2005 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

What's that sound?
It's the sound of clutch.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

3 More runs in the 9th
It can be done.  THis is nothing compared to some of the other ridiculous Baltimore Orioles style comebacks this year.

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

The tying run...
Is coming to the plate.

Padres are hotter than BBQ chickespamalamba.

I wanna see Graves
and hear the Reds fans boo him.  I loved it when they showed fans wearing bags over their heads with tears and sad faces.  Hilarious.

Fick for Greene
Let's do this Fick. Let's fickin' do this.

HE FICKING DID IT!!!
BK!!! HE FICKING DID IT!!!

I can't wait to see Reds fans tomorrow
They should all wear paper bags for the entire REDS Bullpen.

They are worse than the CARDS bullpen!

I like Fick's hair
He has a Ceasar cut going. Big League Hair.

Loretta grounded into a double play...
I smell extra innings. The Padres love extra innings.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 6:55 PM PDT reply actions

Aki vs Randa
C'mon Padres.... Let's be a team.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 7:06 PM PDT reply actions

EXTRA INNINGS!!!
Man... Talk about a rally!

Heart of the order coming up. I can smell the clutchness cooking.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 7:08 PM PDT reply actions

Nevin
I'd like to see Nevin take this team on his shoulders and win this game right here.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

One common thing...
My first game this season I don't catch any part of at all, and Padres get ridiculous crushed.

This game, I don't tune in until top of the 9th, and wallah.

I'm clutch.

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Well... Bottom of the tenth....
Padres not able to do it. Padres love these long games.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

Linebrink
Striking out the side is rad.

by Dex on May 9, 2005 7:27 PM PDT reply actions

I'm going to go
I'm gonna watch Jess play soccer tonight. You hold down the fort for me.

Go Padres!

by Dex on May 9, 2005 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

Dave Roberts is overrated
and not so much clutch as a leadoff man with an OBP of .307 coming into the game.  Only Nevin has a lower OBP.

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 7:39 PM PDT reply actions

Klesko runs right through a stop sign by Pich
and right into a waiting tag at the plate!  Go figure.  Klesko believes in Seinfield's law of ups and downs.  He likes to balance things out in the course of a game.

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 7:52 PM PDT reply actions

With 2 out, I can see that
But with 1 out and a weak hit to left, I dont know why you would challenge that throw and not let someone else hit you in from third.

Unless Klesko had plans that night and wanted to end the game already.

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Once again, a Padres read my blog comment
and responded accordingly.  Roberts with the go ahead RBI Single and now is "clutch".

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 8:13 PM PDT reply actions

Ump, like Klesko wants this game to end...
Calling him out on strikes on two close pitches.  What is UP with Pads and extra innings.  I wonder what long term effect will this have on Pads arms, good thing, it seems that we have such a deep and durable pen that it is not doing the damage as I fear.

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 8:18 PM PDT reply actions

GAME OVER
Hoffy with SAVE number 9 and Hammond on pace to becoming the first relief pitcher to hit 20 wins in a season!

by bktabinga on May 9, 2005 8:28 PM PDT reply actions

Awesome game
Is it ironic that the "overrated" Dave Roberts knocked in the winning run?

I hate Danny Graves.  The Cardinals OWN him and now it seems like the rest of the league is catching up too.  He's a big, diaper wearing, thumb sucking baby.

Larry Bowa is all over this guy on the radio in the morning.  No respect for a guy who just shrugs it off and gets upset with the fans for not being supportive.

Bullpens
Interesting thing about the Padres lately is they've been taking advantage of other teams' bullpens. Like they're saying to the fans in San Diego, "Told you guys we're better than the rest of the league."
